  • Natural gas reformed hydrogen is used as a fuel of fuel cell vehicle, PSA process is used for the purification of reformed hydrogen. In this study, the performance of CO adsorbent in PSA process was evaluated. Zeolite adsorbents used in the commercial PSA process is used. The physical and chemical properties of adsorbents were characterized using BET apparatus, XRD, and FE-SEM. The breakthrough apparatus modified from GC was used for the CO breakthrough experiment, the quantitative analysis of CO adsorption capacity was performed using CO breakthrough curve. Zeolite 10X and 13X showed superior CO adsorption capacity than activated alumina. The CO adsorption capacity of zeolite 10X is more than twice of zeolite 13X even the BET surface area is low. It seems that the presence of $Ca^{2+}$ cation in zeolite 10X is beneficial to the adsorption of CO.

  • In order to separate of carbon dioxide in the combustion exhaust gas, monoethanolamine (MEA) and piperazine (PZ) impregnated zeolite 13X adsorbents were used. A series of adsorbents were synthesized by impregnating 30, 50 and 70 wt% of MEA and PZ respectively on zeolite 13X pellet. XRD, FT-IR and BET were used to characterize the properties of impregnated pelletized zeolite 13X absorbents. In order to investigate the separation characteristics of carbon dioxide, zeolite pellet, MEA impregnated zeolite and PZ impregnated zeolite pellet were investigated at 25, 50 and $75^{\circ}C$. Amine impregnated pelletized zeolite absorbent has shown that adsorption decreases with increasing temperature. Finally, the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity when emission temperature of the combustion exhaust gas, PZ impregnated zeolite pellet was 1.8 times than zeolite pellet as well as 20 times than MEA impregnated zeolite pellet.

  • There are three main methods to store heat energy; sensible heat storage, latent heat storage, and thermochemical heat storage. Thermochemical heat storage has the highest storage density among the three methods, so this study focused on the thermochemical heat storage method. Experiments were conducted in this study with Zeolite 13x as thermochemical material in a large-scale reactor with 8 kg of Zeolite 13x. Experiments analyzed storage density of Zeolite 13x with respect to four different heating temperatures ($50^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$) in heat storage process. As a result, they showed 40~50 percent of storage efficiency in the experiment. Experiments also revealed that reactions between Zeolite 13x and water vapor were reversible and stable, but efficiency of the system was low, compared with sensible heat storage systems or latent heat storage systems.

  • This study was performed to remove the dissolved benzene in water by using TMA-Zeolite complex which was formed by the adsorption of TMA(Tetramethyl ammonium), a kind of ration surfactant on a natural zeolite produced in Korea. The dorminant clay minerals of the natural zeolite was identified by X-ray diffractometry and Infrared spectrophotometry to be mordenite and clinoptilolite. The CEC of the zeolite used was 95.9 cmol/kg. TMA was adsorbed on natural zeolite very quickly, and the amount of TMA adsorption on zeolite was known to be equivalent to about 8% of the CEC of natrual zeolite. The amount of benzene adsorption on TMA-zeolite complex was much more than natural zeolite, indicating that the dissolved benzene in water could be removed effectively by TMA-zeolite comple.

  • Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology using reusable energy is a plausible process to capture $CO_2$ from non-point sources. In this paper, adsorption and desorption were repeatedly tested using low concentration $CO_2$. Three types of adsorbents were examined in cyclic $CO_2$ adsorption and thermal regeneration. Adsorption capacities of zeolite 5A, zeolite 13X and activated carbon were 21 mg/g, 12 mg/g and 6 mg/g, respectively. Zeolite 5A shows the highest adsorption capacities after cyclic thermal regeneration.

  • A high quality Na-X zeolite membrane was synthesized on a seeded ${\alpha}-alumina$ disc by the secondary growth method. Structural characterization was done by X-ray spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and AFM imaging. The performance evaluation of the membrane was firstly tested in separation of glucose/water solutions by pervaporation process. There was obtained a separation factor $182.7{\pm}8.8$, while the flux through the membrane was $3.6{\pm}0.3kg\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$. The zeolite membrane was then used for desalination of aqueous solutions consisting of $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$ because of the importance of these ions in water and wastewater treatments. The effects of some parameters such as temperature and solution concentration on the desalination process were studied for investigating of diffusion/adsorption mechanism in membrane separation. Finally, high water fluxes ranged from 2 up to $9kg\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ were obtained and the rejection factors were resulted more than 95% for $Na^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ and near to 99% for $Cs^+$ and $Sr^{2+}$. Based on the results, fluxes were significantly improved due to convenient passage of water molecules from large pores of NaX, while the fouling was declining dramatically. Based on the results, NaX zeolite can efficiently use for the removal of different cations from wastewaters.

  • In order to investigate the adsorption characteristics for Sr ion using the Na-X zeolite synthesized from coal fly ash, batch tests and response surface analyses were carried out. The adsorption kinetic data for Sr ions, using Na-X zeolite, fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. The uptake of Sr ions followed the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 196.46 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies were conducted at different reaction temperatures, with the results indicating that Sr ion adsorption by Na-X zeolite was an endothermic (${\Delta}H^o$>0) and spontaneous (${\Delta}G^o$<0) process. Using the response surface methodology of the Box-Behnken method, initial Sr ion concentration ($X_1$), initial temperature ($X_2$), and initial pH ($X_3$) were selected as the independent variables, while the adsorption of Sr ions by Na-X zeolite was selected as the dependent variable. The experimental data fitted well with a second-order polynomial equation by multiple regression analysis. The value of the determination coefficient ($R^2=0.9937$) and the adjusted determination coefficient (adjusted $R^2=0.9823$) was close to 1, indicating high significance of the model. Statistical results showed the order of Sr removal based on experimental factors to be initial pH > initial concentration > temperature.

  • This study was conducted to develop n convenient and efficient granular type absorbent with high CEC from powdery zeolite, which is a waste produced while crushing the natural zeolite of Korea to get a particular particle size. The change of mineralogical characteristics during hydrothermal alternation of natural zeolite to Na-P zeolite in alkaline solution at various reaction times was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and total elemental analysis. The columnar aggregate of Na-P Zeolite was produced by calcinating the natural zeolite-charcoal extrudates of about 3 mm diameter. In 24 hours reaction, clinoptillonite, mordenite and feldspar in natural zeolite were disappeared by 3 N NaOH treatment, while Na-P Zeolite with spherical granular structure was newly detected by XRD. As increasing reaction time, Si/Al ratio in remaining solution was deceased. The CEC of the synthesized material increased more than 2 times compared with that of natural zeolite, although the diameter of Na-P zeolite were rather increased.

  • Sodium type faujasite(FAU) zeolite membranes with a thickness of 5${\mu}m$ and a Si/Al molar ratio of 1.5 were prepared by the secondary growth process. The $CO_2/N_2$ separation in the vacuum mode was investigated at $30^{\circ}C$ for an equimolar $CO_2-N_2$ mixed gas before and after embedding 13X zeolite beads in the permeate side. The embedded 13X zeolite beads improved both $CO_2$ permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor, simultaneously. The phenomenon was explained by an increment in the $CO_2$ desorption rate at the FAU zeolite/$\alpha-Al_2O_3$ phase boundary due to an enhanced $CO_2$ escaping through the pore channels of the $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ support layer. In the present paper, it will be emphasized that a hybridization of a membrane with an adsorbent can provide a key to break through the trade-off between permeance and separation factor, generally shown in a membrane separation.

  • Zeolite membranes on various supports such as filter paper, cotton fiber, and glass fiber filter were prepared by secondary growth hydrothermal synthesis. First, zeolite NaA (${\approx}0.5{\mu}m$) and silicalite-1 (${\approx}0.2{\mu}m$) crystals were synthesized as zeolite seed crystals, and they were attached to the surfaces of the supports via chemical bonding. Zeolite NaA or silicalite-1 membranes could be synthesized on the supports coated with the seed crystals. The prepared zeolite membranes were observed by scanning electron microscope and analyzed by X-ray diffraction.
