Pericarp of Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai have been used as a crude medicine for the treatment of ozena, rheumatoid, nasal sinusitis, meno-xenia, dyspepsia, toothache, sore throat, pains in the limbs, etc. in Korea. A sterol fraction and two compounds, compound I and II were isolated from the roots, stems, leaves of Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai. The sterol fraction was identified as a mixture of ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and campesterol. Compound I, colorless prismatic crystals, $C_{13]H_{13}NO_4$, mp. $175{\sim}177^{\circ}$, was proved to be skimmianine which is one of the alkaloids and compound II, $C_{14}H_{28}O_2$, mp. $53{\sim}55^{\circ}$, white powdered crystals was identified as myristic acid.

The five fractions from the barks of Zanthoxylum coreanum in Je-ju Island are examined in detail chromatographically in this paper. 37 compounds are detected in all of the fractions, and the compounds from each of fractions are found to be presumed that this plant is classified into the same group as that of the temperate Zanthoxylum taxa but is different from the tropical zanthoxylum taxa by its chemical components.

The Korean folk medicine 'Cho Pi Na Mu' has been used orally to tuberculosis, neuralgia, acute and chronic gastritis and arthritis. In order to clarify the botanical origin this crude drug, comparative anatomical studies were made on the branches of Zanthoxylum species growing wild in Korea, i.e. Z. coreanum, Z. piperitum, Z. piperitum var. pubescens, Z. planispinum, Z. schinifolium, Z. schinifolium var. inermis, Z. schinifolium var. microphyllum. As a result, it was clarified that 'Cho Pi Na Mu' was the branch of Z. piperitum.

To clarify the botanical origin of this crude drug, comparative anatomical studies were made on the branches of Zanthoxylum species growing wild in Korea, i.e. Z. coreanum, Z. piperitum, Z. piperitum var. pubescens, Z. planispinum, Z. schinifolium, Z. schinifolium var. inermis, Z. schinifolium var. microphyllum. As a result, it was clarified that "EJePiNaMu" was the branch of Zanthoxylum planispinum.
