  • The ski jump in Innsbruck known for the famous annual New Year "Four-ski-jump-tournament" has been fully renewed. The original jumping tower (built for the 1976 Olympic winter games) was fully pulled down and a new landmark similar to a lighthouse has been erected located on a small hill at the border of the city. Zaha Hadid(London) won the international architectural competition for this significant building. The constructional realisation has been ordered from Aste Konstruktion and has been finally honoured with the Austrian state award for consulting 2002. After a very strict timetable the building was already handed restaurant at the top.

  • The trend of using Grasshopper with Rhino3D actively in architectural design process is recently spreading around the world. Well-known architects and designers such as Zaha Hadid, Patrik Schmacher is famous for using Grasshopper as their main design tool. As a tool for so-called 'Parametric Design', Grasshopper is receiving much attention all over the world. Grasshopper as a visual programming language has an advantage that designers and non-professionals of computer can easily learn it and use it to their works. However, those designers tend to make inefficient approaches with Grasshopper compared to computer programming professionals. Meanwhile, the difference between other programming languages and Grasshopper leads to the need of different approaches from other programming languages. This study aims to propose desired approaches of Grasshopper programming or scripting to be able to break through the inefficient approaches that designer is likely to make, by examining the characteristics of Grasshopper and exploring the appropriate programming approaches for Grasshopper.

  • The European architects including MVRDV, Rem Koolhaas, Van Berkel, and Zaha Hadid tend to use the their own design strategy based on the objective data. This Architectural design method leads to make new paradigm of contemporary architecture. For the purpose of the understanding a part of new architecture paradigm I will analyze the case of Villa VPRO designed by MVRDV. At the result, I can draw the following conclusions. First, through collecting and analyzing data, drawing design concept and planning the space program, they decided on the design strategies of Villa VPRO. They designed the space volume having 42.4m$\times$42.4m floors and infiltrated environmental elements to solve the problems about deep space. Second, Villa VPRO was constructed by 'creative space-making system: a series of floors much like a geological formation, the continuous floors interconnected by spatial means, the precision bombardments of snake-like holes, open elevations, the stacking spaces. Third, Villa VPRO produced the spectacle space effect the various formation of continuous floors make a lot of difference space types in this building. Also they lead to move naturally and give event space. A numbers of holes and openness make it possible to provide friendly environment with combining light and air with views of the surrounding and transparency. And using the method of stacking many types of space make the differences in height.

  • Contemporary architecture is showing its deconstruction and departure from modern architecture based on rationality, such as reductionism or virtualism. This means a shift from a mechanistic and ecological world view to an organic and ecological view, from a deterministic reason to a reason for a possible secret static. This study examines the potential of fractals, a scientific theory of complexity that is emerging as a new paradigm in the 21st century, as an appropriate alternative to contemporary complexity architecture. The method and scope of this study were understood and its features were identified through literature and data research and prior study review. Based on the organic nature of fractal geometry, we analyzed the works of contemporary architects(Frank Gehry, Bernard Tschumi, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Zvi Hecker, Ito Toyo) and studied the possibility of architectural design using the principle of fractal. As a result, fractal geometry, similar to the patterned order of nature, has an infinite set of organizational functionalities in architecture and can be applied in various aspects of design analysis. Architectural designs based on the fractal theory will require more research and development to realize dynamic design representation using digital computers.

  • Non-geometric shapes in contemporary architecture was explained from the transcendental schema of Deleuze with his abstraction theory. In this explanation, the intensity, the movement and change and the sublime were suggested as the expressional elements of the transcendental abstraction related with the artistic sensation of architecture. First, the intensity as a power of sensation which acts to the body before the recognition of brain is mainly expressed with the movement of curved lines of architectural space. Second, the movement of change is expressed as the de-centralized and de-formalized nomadic curve as the line in architectural 'smooth space' which has unrestrained orientations. Third, the sublime is expressed in the hugeness, enormousness or sometimes uncanny in void space, which could be contradictively mixed with senses of displeasure and pleasure. The sublime feelings in architecture can be emerging by rationally overcoming the unpleasant senses of contradictive spaces in architecture or urban fabric. This study has explained those expressional elements with the architectural works of Steven Holl, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid.

  • This paper summarizes some of approaches that could be taken for data exchange in a non-interoperable work environment and reports lessons learned from the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park project. Today's widespread application of building information modeling (BIM) to the construction and architectural design industries requires a change in the cooperation between business organizations and their methods of communication. In particular, the interoperability of information between interdisciplinary organizations, which use specific programs for different purposes, has become a critical issue. More than just a technical problem, it is also highly related to an organization's collaboration culture and the particulars of a specific project. This paper describes the interoperability issue that occurred during the construction documentation phase of the irregularly shaped building project, Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and Samoo Architects and Engineers, from the perspective of the technological problem and the collaborative organizations' communications. Although the perfect compatibility of information is not possible, this paper deals with a practical approach to the interoperability issue by examining the way the end-users of computer-aided design (CAD) resolved the interoperability problems in practice.

  • The main goal of this paper is to study vibration of damaged core laminated sectorial plates with Functionally graded (FG) face sheets based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The structures are made of a damaged isotropic core and two external face sheets. These skins are strengthened at the nanoscale level by randomly oriented Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and are reinforced at the microscale stage by oriented straight fibers. These reinforcing phases are included in a polymer matrix and a three-phase approach based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka scheme and on the Halpin-Tsai approach, which is developed to compute the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. Three complicated equations of motion for the sectorial plates under consideration are semi-analytically solved by using 2-D differential quadrature method. Using the 2-D differential quadrature method in the r- and z-directions, allows one to deal with sandwich annular sector plate with arbitrary thickness distribution of material properties and also to implement the effects of different boundary conditions of the structure efficiently and in an exact manner. The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples. The sandwich annular sector plate is assumed to be simply supported in the radial edges while any arbitrary boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges including simply supported, clamped and free. Several parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of these multi-layered structures depending on the damage features, through-the-thickness distribution and boundary conditions.
