Gut contents of larval gunnels collected in Kyonggi Bay, Yellow Sea were examined in order to understand the feeding habit of the fish. There were some differences in the gut contents depending upon the body length of the fish. Most important food organisms were Copepoda followed by Appendicularia, fish eggs and Decapoda larvae. Although major food organisms were closely related to the size of zooplankton population, the fish showed a positive food selectivity for Copepoda with increasing body lengh, while there was a negative selectivity for Chaetognatha regardless of body length. However, there appeared to be no size preference on the food organisms by the larval gunnel.
We investigated temporal changes of growth of hydrophytes, aquatic biota and absorption of nutrient depending on planting mat type (synthetic fiber, coconut fiber) of artificial vegetation island (AVI) through pilot test using AVI miniatures in Kyungan Stream area of Lake Paldang. There were not significant differences of the water quality parameters (DO, pH, conductivity, turbidity, temperature), phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance among AVI miniatures and control station. The benthic macroinvertebrates showed most individual numbers in the miniature which was made by synthetic fiber and planted with Phragmites australis. The average and maximum height of hydrophytes in AVI miniatures was similar except one miniature where Phragmites australis was planted in synthetic fiber mat and grew more slowly. The adsorbed amount of nutrients and microbes in coconut fiber mat were larger than those in synthetic fiber mat regardless of trophic state of installed waterbody. The continuous increase of adsorbed amount of nutrients and microbes of coconut fiber mat for 8 months in an oligotrophic lake indicates that coconut fiber mat is suitable for the planting mat of AVI in an oligotrophic lake where nutrients are limited for growth of hydrophytes.
A preliminary quantitative model of the trophic structure in Gwangyang bay, Korea was obtained using ECOPATH and data from relevant studies to date in the region. The model integrates and analyzes biomass, food spectrum, trophic interactions and the key trophic pathways of the system. The bay model comprises 9 groups of benthic primary producer, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, bivalve, pelagic fish, demersal fish and piscivorous fish. The total system throughput was estimated at $2.4\;kgWW/m^2/yr$, including a consumption of $41\%$, exports of $9\%$, respiratory flows of $24\%$ and flows into detritus of $26\%$. All of which originate from primary producers measured at $52\%$ and detritus of $48\%$. The total biomass was seen to be high compared to the levels of Somme, Delaware, Chesapeake Bays and Seine Estuary. This seems to be possibly due to artificial bivalve aquaculture and overestimation of benthos and benthic primary producer groups. The deviation can be calibrated by neglecting aquaculture and decreasing the habitat area for the groups. The trophic network of the bay shows a low level of recycling and organization as indicated by Finn's cycling index $3.3\%$, Ascendancy $3.1\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits, Capacity $5.1\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits and Redundancy $2.2\;kgC/m^2/yr$ bits. A high relative ascendancy of $62\%$ and a low internal relative ascendancy of $18\%$ indicate the system is not fully organized and stable towards disturbances, depending upon external connections. Although the model should be continuously provided with field data and calibrated further in depth, this study is the first trophic model applied to the region. The model can be a useful tool to understand the ecosystem in a quantitative manner.
In this paper, the real time monitoring system for the abnormal state of marine algae does not detect the plankton which may directly cause the red tide or the water bloom. But checks both oxygen reduction and nitrogen reduction in water, which indicates the characteristics of zooplankton and phytoplankton respectively, and this system makes a module that monitors in real time the temperature and the illumination of the water, which are indirect factors, with sensors placed in and outside the water, and this module transmits signals periodically at specific intervals to a sever that builds up data base, and the data collected in these ways will be analyzed and compared with the standard data from Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and then these data will be made the adequate form of information to be provided to the users as visual information, thus, this system intends to make a red tide and water bloom monitoring system tailored for individual fish farm businesses that has local characteristics and can quickly operate outside working hours, which differs from the existing wide area detecting and monitoring systems.

The aim of this study was to evaluate artificial fish shelter, which was known to increase prey survival and expand habitat space to improve species diversity and fish communities in a freshwater ecosystem. The experiment was performed at an outdoor test-bed for three months from 2011 by comparing the responses to adjustments in the volume of the artificial patch (juvenile fish shelter, JFS) in the control and experimental groups. Analysis of the environmental conditions over two periods (Period1 ~ 2) showed minor differences in the physichemical characteristics of water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton biomass, thus, allowing comparative analysis of feeding ecology. However, high water temperature conditions in Period1 ($25.6{\pm}2.0^{\circ}C$), affected the predation activity of the piscivorous fishes, Coreoperca herzi (C. herzi, size $89{\pm}4mm$). Survival rates of the prey fishes, Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (R. oxycephalus, size $29{\pm}1mm$), improved as the patch volume increased and were higher than those of the control group by 35.9 ~ 46.7%. Analysis showed that JFS reduced the chances of predator-prey encounter, and thereby minimized prey vulnerability.
To study the influence of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus on harmful algal bloom suppression, we focused on assessing the rotifer's abilities using several prey species : Microcystis aeruginosa, Synechocystis sp., Chlorella vulgaris and Coelastrum sp. of the warm-weather species and the cold-weather centric diatom Stephanodiscus hantzchii. Grazing effects and growth rates of rotifers B. calyciflorus were 94.5% and $1.29d^{-1}$, respectively, for Synechocystis sp., 87.4% and $0.60d^{-1}$, respectively, for M. aeruginosa, 95.2% and $0.65d^{-1}$, respectively, for C. $vulgaris^{TM}$, 78.6% and $0.45d^{-1}$, respectively, for C. vulgaris UTEX., 86.5% and $0.99d^{-1}$, respectively, for Coelastrum sp., and 82.6% and $0.40d^{-1}$, respectively, for S. hantzchii. Of these, although the growth of Synechocystis and Coelastrum was effectively suppressed by rotifer grazing, efficient suppression effects on Stephanodiscus blooms were unexpected. The present study revealed that reproduction of B. calyciflorus was greatly influenced by its food types in the initial stages and the efficiencies of bio-agents as sole food sources vary depending on the target algae and the agent.

We investigated the community structure and performed detailed characterization of fish larvae assemblages collected from the southern coast of Korea in the spring and summer of 2021. The total abundance of fish larvae varied from 193.6 to 1,915.6 ind. 10 m-3. The species were distributed across 10 orders with 23 families, and 41 taxa. The dominant taxa were Gobiidae spp., Engraulis japonicus, Nibea albiflora, Sebastiscus spp., Callionymus valenciennei, Pennahia argentata, Sebastes thompsoni, Parablennius yatabei, and Platycephalus indicus. Engraulis japonicus individuals were collected from April to August and their presence contributed greatly to the total abundance of fish larvae. The total number and abundance of species peaked in early summer and the Shannon-Weaver index was in the range 0.11-1.49. Redundancy analyses revealed that the major environmental factors affecting the fish larvae assemblage differed according to the dominant taxa. Water temperature, zooplankton density, and Paracalanus parvus s. l. density were the key factors affecting the spatial and temporal distribution of fish larvae in the southern coast of Korea in spring and summer.

This study, analyzed the stomach contents, stable isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) in muscle tissue, and potential food sources (particulate organic matter, Zostera marina, epiphytes, and zooplankton) of Sardinops melanostictus in the southern coast of Korea to evaluate its dietary changes across seasons (summer and autumn 2022). The diet of S. melanostictus predominantly comprised organic detritus (99%) regardless of the season. The isotope results showed that S. melanostictus had mean δ13C and δ15N values of -17.7±0.4‰ and 10.6±0.5‰, respectively and seasonal variations were observed (t-test, P=0.010, P=0.002). However, the isotopic mixing model showed that particulate organic matter was a major nutritional source for S. melanostictus in summer and autumn (88.7% and 90.2%, respectively). Based on the stomach contents and stable isotope signatures, these results may help improve the understanding of S. melanostictus and establish the management measures for their conservation.

This study was conducted to understand the seasonal patterns and variation of the copepod community in the Anma Islands of Yeonggwang, Yellow Sea, with a focus on seasonal surveys to assess the factors affecting their occurrence. Throughout the survey period, Acartia hongi, Paracalanus parvus s. l., and Ditrichocorycaeus affinis were dominant species, while Acartia ohtsukai, Acartia pacifica, Bestiolina coreana, Centropages abdominalis, Labidocera rotunda, Paracalanus sp., Tortanus derjugini, Tortanus forcipatus occurred differently by season and station. As a results of cluster analysis, the copepod communities were distinguished into three distinct groups: spring-winter, summer, and autumn. The results of this study showed that the occurrence patterns of copepod species can vary depending on environmental conditions (topographic, distance from the inshore, etc.), and their spatial occurrence patterns between seasons were controlled by water temperature and prey conditions. One of the physical mechanisms that can affect the distribution of zooplankton in the Yellow Sea is the behavior of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water (YSBCW), which shows remarkable seasonal fluctuations. More detailed further studies are needed for clear grounds for mainly why to many Calanus sinicus in the central region of the Yellow Sea are seasonally moving to the inshore, what strategies to seasonally maintain the population, and support the possibilities of complex factors.

The vertical distribution of snow crab Chionoecetes spp. larvae in the East Sea were investigated in April 2021 using the Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS). The water temperature ranged from 0.86 to 17.2℃, and salinity from 34.0 to 34.7 psu. Zoea I and II occurred range from 29 to 1,982 inds.103 m-3 at 10 stations, and range from 4 to 11 inds.103 m-3 at 3 stations, separately. Therefore, Zoea I occurred in wider area and higher density than Zoea II at all stations. In the vertical distribution of larvae, all zoeal stages were mainly distributed in the 30-40 m strata, and the larvae showed nocturnal vertical migration similar to that of most zooplankton. Zoea I appeared in the range from 13.7 to 15.8℃ and occurred at the highest density of 1982 inds.103 m-3 at 14℃. And Zoea II appeared range from 13.4 to 14.5℃ and occurred in the highest density of 11 inds.103 m-3 at 13.4℃. In conclusion, the early larval stage (zoea I) occurred at a higher range of sea surface temperature than later larval stage (zoea II).
