  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance to degradation of four commercial composite resins-Prodigy(Kerr, USA), Vitalescence(Ultradent, USA), Z 250(3M, USA), Filtek flow(3M, USA)- in an alkaline solution. Resistance to degradation was evaluated on the basis of following parameters: (a) mass loss(%), (b) Si loss(ppm), (c) degradation depth($\mu}m$). The results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference between Prodigy and Vitalescence, also Z 250 and Filtek flow. But, there was significant difference between former group and latter group. 2. The sequence of the degree of degradation layer depth was in descending order by Z 250, Filtek flow, Prodigy, Vitalescence. There was significant difference among the materials. 3. The sequence of the Si loss was in descending order by Filtek flow, Z 250, Prodigy, Vitalescence. There was significant difference among the materials. 4. The correlation coefficient between mass loss and degradation layer depth(r=0.714, p<0.05), mass loss and Si loss(r=0.770, p<0.05), and degradation layer depth and Si loss(r=0.930, p<0.05) were relatively high. 5. When observed with SEM, destruction of bonding was observed between resin matrix and filler. 6. When observed with CLSM, degradation layer depth of composite resin surface was observed.

  • The present study aims to characterize a cDNA encoding zebrafish thyroid hormone receptor $\alpha{1}$ $(zTR\alpha{1)}$ in order to investigate its possible role in the early stage of embryonic development. A mobility shift assay showed that $zTR\alpha{1}$ overexpressed in COS7 cells specifically bound to thyroid hormone response element (TRE). In addition, the specific interaction of anti-rat $TR\alpha{1}$ antibodies with $zTR\alpha1$/TRE complexes demonstrated that the cDNA clone encoded zebrafish thyroid hormone receptor $\alpha{1}$. Transient cotransfection assays showed that $zTR\alpha{1}$ repressed the transcription which was induced by retinoic acid (RA), a well-characterized embryonic morphogen. These results suggest that zTRal may be involved in regulating the RA-induced gene transcription during early embryonic development.

  • In order to identify the origin and nature of the spilled oil in the potential source, we analyzed the pattern of alkyi PAM(Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in fuel standard and environmental samples. Alkyl PAM patterns are used for fuel-type identification in weathered environmental samples. Detection of alkyl PAH was achieved by operation CC/MS in the SIM mode. We chose ions of naphthalene(m/z 128), C1-naphthalene(m/z 142), C2-naphthalene(m/z 156), C3-naphthalene(m/z 170), C4-naphthalene(m/z 184) for the comparison of this pattern according to the type of fuel. We analyzed tile pattern of alkyl PAH in neat gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and JP-8, and in groundwater samples which were collected in monitoring wells. The distribution map of alkyl-naphthalene shows different patterns among four different fuel types (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and JP-8). Particularly, tile distribution map of kerosene and JP-8 is found to be of value in identifying fuel type in that the difference is clear. Therefore distribution patterns of alkyl-PAH compounds provide another useful tool for fuel-type identification of petroleum fuels.

  • We searched and studied galaxy overdensities at 0.6 < z < 4.5 in the areas of two GOODS fields. These overdensities are identified by running top-hat filters on the two dimensional spatial distribution of two galaxy samples - a K-band limited, photometric redshift sample at 0.6 < z < 4.5, and BVz-color selected sample targeting overdensities at z ~ 3.7 and z ~ 4.0. Here photometric redshifts are derived from multi-wavelength data ranging from U-band through 8 micron band of the Spitzer. We find 52 overdensities with significances of 3.5-7 ${\sigma}$. The derived masses found to be a > $10^{13}\;M_{\odot}$ with the comoving number density of a few ${\times}10^{-6}\;Mpc^{-3}$ at z ~ 3. In order to understand the high number density of massive overdensities at high redshift, we carried out an analysis of galaxy overdensities using the mock galaxy catalog based on Millennium simulation selected in the same way as the analysis of the observational data. In the simulation, we find 650 galaxy overdensities with a 3.5 ${\sigma}$ detection threshold over $2^{{\circ}2}$ sky field. The number density of the very massive overdensities (M > $10^{14}\;M_{\odot}$) in simulation shows a similar trend with the observation. We further discuss implications of our results.

  • We developed a kind of soy-based sauce for stews using three recipes and sensory evaluation processes, and examined the biological activities such as antioxidative, fibrinolytic and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities of hot water extract of Cornus officinalis S. et Z in order to use as functional ingredient. The developed stew was composed of soy sauce $1\frac{1}{2}$ Tbsp, sugar $1\frac{1}{4}$ Tbsp, garlic, small green onion, powdered sesame and sesame seed oil $\frac{1}{2}$ tsp, respectively, ginger extract $\frac{1}{4}$ tsp, black pepper $\frac{1}{8}$ and water $\frac{2}{3}$C per 300 g of main ingredients(pork rib, chicken and dried pollack). It was evaluated more highly acceptable than the original recipes by sensory test. Replacement of water in the recipe of the developed stew sauce with hot water extract of Cornus officinalis S. et Z did' nt affect the sensory quality. From the above results. we concluded that hot water extract of Cornus officinalis S. et Z might be a excellent source to provide health functionality.

  • Two dimensional Monte-Carlo simulations of a non-reactive solute plume in isotropic porous media which are physically and chemically heterogeneous are conducted to determine the variations of moment. Retardation factors of 1, 2 and 5 are given to ascertain how the second moments are changed as adsorption increased. Retarded longitudinal second spatial moment, ${Z_{11}}^{'R}(t',l')$, increased during the transport process and as the dimensionless lengths of line plume source, $l_2'$, increased. ${Z_{11}}^{'R}(t',l')$ decreased as the retardation factors increased, and the simulated moments fit well to the first-order analytical results. Retarded longitudinal plume centroid variance, ${Z_{11}}^{'R}(t',l')$, decreased as the dimensionless lengths of line plume source, $l_2'$, increased and as the retardation factor increased. The result indicates that the uncertainty about the plume center decreased, and the ergodic condition for the second spatial moments is far from reaching. Simulated longitudinal one particle displacement covariance, ${Z_{11}}^{'R}(t')$, well consistent with the first-order analytical results for the three degrees of retardation factors of 1, 2 and 5 respectively. It is, consequently, concluded that the retarded longitudinal second moments could be produced by stochastic simulation, and that the first-order analytical results definitely provides very close values of the longitudinal retarded moments.

  • An equivalent single layer trigonometric shear deformation theory taking into account transverse shear deformation effect as well as transverse normal strain effect is presented for static flexure of cross-ply laminated composite and sandwich plates. The inplane displacement field uses sinusoidal function in terms of thickness coordinate to include the transverse shear deformation effect. The cosine function in thickness coordinate is used in transverse displacement to include the effect of transverse normal strain. The kinematics of the present theory is much richer than those of the other higher order shear deformation theories, because if the trigonometric term (involving thickness coordinate z) is expanded in power series, the kinematics of higher order theories (which are usually obtained by power series in thickness coordinate z) are implicitly taken into account to good deal of extent. Governing equations and boundary conditions of the theory are obtained using the principle of virtual work. The closed-form solutions of simply supported cross-ply laminated composite and sandwich plates have been obtained. The results of present theory are compared with those of the classical plate theory (CPT), first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) of Reddy and exact three dimensional elasticity theory wherever applicable. The results predicted by present theory are in good agreement with those of higher order shear deformation theory and the elasticity theory.
