  • Purpose: This study was carried out to accumulate basic data for nursing intervention development by evaluating the stress and emotional status of patients and their families after receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), illucidating and analysing related factors in order to decrease the negative effects of HSCT on their emotion. Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire to 53 HSCT patients and 50 families, who were older than 18 at tertiary-care institutions in Seoul, from January, 2000 to August, 2003. Results: There was a significant score difference in stress (t=-2.302, P<0.05). Correlation between stress and emotional status was statistically significant (r=0.486, P<0.01; r=0, P<0.05). Economical burden of cost had significant effects on stress of patients (F=4.194, P<0.05). The series of emotional status of patients without jobs were higher (T=-2.583, P<0.05). The emotional status of families were influenced by monthly income (F=4.036, P<0.05) and patients' diagnosis (F=3.088, P<0.05). Conclusion : These results suggest that the cares for families should be considered with great concern as well as the ones for patients. In addition, such factors as economical burden by medical cost, monthly income and job status should not be excluded in transplantation nursing plans.

  • As an art group, De Stijl (1917-1931) led a total art movement encompassing painting, sculpture, design, and architecture. Among these, architecture, as a model of the total art pursued by the group, was encapsulated by the term 'plastic architecture.' The term reflects architecture's shared features with plastic art, especially its pictorial characteristics. Firstly, De Stijl architecture shares geometric form with painting. Assembled in simple, clear and rational structures, the geometric forms signified universal forms, and extended the pictorial experimentation that Mondrian exercised through Neo-Plasticism to architecture. Constructed with colour fields made of concrete wall, De Stijl architecture is geometric abstract painting embodied in space. Together with such pictorial characteristics, large plate glass windows, narrow window frames, and cantilever structure minimize the building's visual weight. De Stijl architecture, which appears suspended in the air, is an architectural version of the abstract paintings of the era that revealed unknown spaces beyond perspective. De Stijl architecture is also an 'open' architecture, where the units placed as if radiating from the center form relations with each other flexibly and organically. The observer in such a space is encouraged to experience space within time, as his/her physical and visual mobility and extension are maximized. De Stijl architecture is an example of how the time-space continuum, represented within picture frame through Cubism, Futurism, and abstract art, can be realized in space. By transforming the ideal space of painting into real space in this way, 'plastic architecture' turned out to be an architectural manifestation of the utopianism of the era, aimed at building a society in 'perfect harmony.' However, such rationalism and universalism are not free from the violence of totalization that deletes various differences. This is evident in the history that followed as the geometric form of architecture and urban planning proliferated across the globe, engulfing the diverse natural landscapes and local cultures.

  • Although widely used as a host for recombinant protein production, Escherichia coli is unsuitable for massive screening of recombinant clones, owing to its poor secretion of proteins. A vector system containing T4 holin and T7 lysozyme genes under the control of the ptsG promoter derivative that is inducible in the absence of glucose was developed for programmed cell lysis of E. coli. Because E. coli harboring the vector grows well in the presence of glucose, but is lysed upon glucose exhaustion, the activity of the foreign gene expressed in E. coli can be monitored easily without an additional step for cell disruption after the foreign gene is expressed sufficiently with an appropriate concentration of glucose. The effectiveness of the vector was demonstrated by efficient screening of the amylase gene from a Bacillus subtilis genomic library. This vector system is expected to provide a more efficient and economic screening of bioactive products from DNA libraries in large quantities.

  • Patients at the same pathological stage of esophageal cancer (EC) that received the same surgical therapy by the same surgeon may have distinct prognoses. The current study aimed to explore the possibility of differentially-expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) underlying this phenomenon. Samples were collected from EC patients at the same tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage but with different prognoses. Paracancerous normal tissues were taken as controls. The specimens were histopathologically analyzed. Differentially-expressed miRNAs were analyzed using real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Compared with patients with poor prognosis, those with good prognosis exhibited 88 two-fold or more than two-fold increased miRNA fragments and 4 half-decreased miRNAs. The most noticeably up-regulated miRNAs included hsa-miR-31, hsa-miR-196b, hsa-miR-652, hsa-miR-125a-5p, hsa-miR-146b, hsa-miR-200c, hsa-miR-23b, hsa-miR-29a, hsa-miR-186, hsa-miR-205, hsa-miR-376a, hsa-miR-410, hsa-miR-532-3p, and hsa-miR-598, whereas the most significantly-downregulated miRNAs were hsa-let-7e, hsa-miR-130b, and hsa-miR-103. EC patients at same TNM stage but with different prognoses show differentially-expressed miRNAs.

  • Anticoagulation therapy with warfarin sodium is used to reduce the risk of thromboembolic events in patients with valvular heart disease, prosthetic heart valve, recurrent myocardiac infarction, etc. To keep anticoagulation state and minimize bleeding risk, patients with high risk of thromboembolism have been usually hospitalized for heparinization before oral surgery like extraction. However, this protocol requires time and high expense because of the long period of hospitalization and this is why low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) therapy is receiving attention in medical field as well as dentistry. LMWH has several advantages over unfractionated heparin (UFH) including predictable anticoagulant response which makes coagulation monitoring unnecessary in most patients and longer half-life than heparin which enables the patients to give themselves a subcutaneous injection once or twice daily. These advantages of LMWH make patients get oral surgery on an outpatient basis so that they can save time and cost. This case report introduces the use of LMWH in dental surgery and suggests proper use of LMWH. Though LMWH bridging therapy is widely used most of the previous studies are observational studies. Therefore randomized controlled trials are necessary to evaluate the safety and efficacy of LMWH bridging therapy.

  • Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a long-term adverse effect of chemotherapy treatment. However, current available treatment regimens are not optimal. Emerging evidence suggests that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) could restore the structure and function of injured tissues, but the homing and restorative effects of BMSCs on chemotherapy injured ovaries are still not clear. In this study, we found that granulosa cell (GC) apoptosis induced by cisplatin was reduced when BMSCs were migrated to granulosa cells (GCs) in vitro. Chemotherapy-induced POF was induced by intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin in rats. BMSCs labeled with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) were injected into the rats via the tail vein to investigate the homing and distribution of BMSCs in vivo. The number of BMSCs in the ovarian hilum and medulla was greater than in the cortex, but no BMSCs were found in the follicles and corpus lutea. In addition, the BMSCs treatment group's antral follicle count and estradiol levels increased after 30 days, compared with the POF group. Hence, our study demonstrates that intravenously delivered BMSCs can home to the ovaries, and restore its structure and function in POF model rats.

  • Aldose reductase (AR), the principal enzyme of the polyol pathway, has been shown to play an important role in the diabetic complications, including diabetic cataract. The inhibitors of AR, therefore, would be potential agents for prevention of diabetic complications. As part of our ongoing project directed toward the discovery of preventive and/or treatment for diabetic complications, 48 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using aldose reductase inhibitory activities. Of these, 12 herbal medicines exhibited a significant inhibitory activity against aldose reductase. Particularly, seven herbal medicines, i.e., Eurya japonica, Chrysanthemum indicum, Akebia quinata, Saururus chinensis, Catalpa bignonioides, Lonicera japonica, Vitex rotundifolia showed two times more potent inhibitory activity than the positive control 3.3-tetramethyleneglutaric acid (TMG). In addition, Catalpa bignonioides showed the retardation of cataract-opacification of the lens of the eye under diabetic condition by xylose. Therefore, this result may provide a potential therapeutic approach for preventing and treating diabetic cataracts.
