Rubus fruticosus leaf extract inhibits vascular dementia-induced memory impairment and neuronal loss by attenuating neuroinflammation

  • Vascular dementia (VaD) is characterized by progressive memory impairment, which is associated with microglia-mediated neuroinflammation. Polyphenol-rich natural plants, which possess anti-inflammatory activities, have attracted scientific interest worldwide. This study investigated whether Rubus fruticosus leaf extract (RFLE) can attenuate VaD. Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into five groups: SO, sham-operated and treated with vehicle; OP, operated and treated with vehicle; RFLE-L, operated and treated with low dose (30 mg/kg) of RFLE; RFLE-M, operated and treated with medium dose (60 mg/kg) of RFLE; and RFLE-H, operated and treated with high dose (90 mg/kg) of RFLE. Bilateral common carotid artery and hypotension were used as a modeling procedure, and the RFLE were intraorally administered for 5 days (preoperative 2 and postoperative 3 days). The rats then underwent memory tests including the novel object recognition, Y-maze, Barnes maze, and passive avoidance tests, and neuronal viability and neuroinflammation were quantified in their hippocampi. The results showed that the OP group exhibited VaD-associated memory deficits, neuronal death, and microglial activation in hippocampi, while the RFLE-treated groups showed significant attenuation in all above parameters. Next, using BV-2 microglial cells challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), we evaluated the effects of RFLE in dynamics of proinflammatory mediators and the upstream signaling pathway. RFLE pretreatment significantly inhibited the LPS-induced release of nitric oxide, TNF-α, and IL-6 and upregulation of the MAPKs/NF-κB/iNOS pathway. Collectively, we suggest that RFLE can attenuate the histologic alterations and memory deficits accompanied by VaD, and these roles are, partly due to the attenuation of microglial activation.

  • Recently, aducanumab, a beta amyloid targeted immunotherapy, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Although many questions need to be answered, this approval provides a promising hope for the development of AD drugs that could be supported by new biomarkers such as blood-based ones and composite neuropsychological tests that can confirm pathologic changes in early stages of AD. It is important to elucidate the complexity of AD which is known to be associated with other factors such as vascular etiologies and neuro-inflammation. Through the second international conference of the Korean Dementia Association (KDA), researchers from all over the world have participated in the exchange of opinions with KDA members on the most up-to-date topics. The Academic Committee of the KDA summarizes lectures to provide the depth of the conference as well as discussions. This will be an important milestone to widen the latest knowledge in the research of AD's diagnosis, therapeutics, pathogenesis that can lead to the establishment of future directions.

Development of Scar Improving Materials using Enkephalin Derivatives (엔케팔린 유도체를 이용한 흉터 개선 소재 개발)

  • Although demand for scar treatment has been rising as our quality of life is improved, most scar treatment products rely on importation. Enkephalin is one of the neuropeptides secreted from neuronal ends. As both skin and neuron are derived from the exoderm during the development process, skin cells express opioid receptors as neuronal cells do. Opioid receptors are categorized into three types, mu(m)-, delta(d)-, and kappa(k)- opioid receptors, all of which are directly involved in the wound healing process. In this study, enkephalin derivatives are synthesized by Alanin Scan and their efficacy was evaluated and compared. In vitro wound healing effects, stimulatory effects of collagen synthesis, and skin hydration effects were also evaluated and confirmed. Among Enkephalin derivatives, AS13 showed highest wound healing effect.

  • This study investigated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) of hybrid conductive fabrics. The coaxial transmission line method was used to measure the EMI Shielding effectiveness of the conductive fabrics. We designed and constructed a measuring system, consisting of a network analyzer and a device that serves as a sample holder and at the same time as a transmission medium of incident electromagnetic waves. The measurements of SE were carried out in a frequency range from 100 MHz to 2 GHz. The results of the EMI shielding experiments showed that the maximum electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) values of sandwich type C/A/C (carbon fiber sheet/aluminum foil tape/carbon fiber sheet) and C/Ni/C (carbon fiber sheet/magnetic shielding foil/carbon fiber sheet) samples were 55 dB and 113 dB, respectively, at a frequency of 1.9 GHz.

  • This study addresses the modeling of a bi-directional outlet variable swash plate type axial piston pump with two EPPR valves and an analysis of the response characteristics to the angle control of that pump. In this paper, the combination of the EPPR valve and double rod type piston is referred to as the EPPR regulator. The EPPR regulator is compact and inexpensive, and has good responsiveness. Under actual pump operating conditions, because of the various external conditions of the pump, inertia is applied to the swash plate, generating the tilting torque. Also, the tilting torque can delay or shorten the response characteristics of the regulator. So we validated them through the analysis using SimulationX and these results allow users to freely integrate the EPPR regulator into the desired system.

  • 포항공과대학교의 포항풍력에너지연구센터(PoWER Center)가 개발에 참여했던 750 kW급 직접구동형 국산화 풍력발전 시스템(KBP-750D)은 그 개발이 완료 단계에 이르러 설치를 준비하고 있으며 현재 KBP-750D의 상용화를 추진하기 위한 출력성능 및 하중 측정을 통한 실증연구가 진행되고 있다. IEC 61400-13의 규격을 기준으로 수행되는 하중 측정은 수개월간 지속되는 측정을 통한 방대한 하중 데이터 수집 과정과 데이터 검증, 데이터 분류, 시계열 해석, 하중 통계 해석, 주파수 분석, 하중 스펙트럼 해석과 등가하중 해석의 측정 데이터 처리 과정으로 구성된다. 본 연구에서는 하중 측정 데이터를 처리 해석함에 있어서 성력화를 도모하고 정확하면서도 객관적인 성능평가 자료를 확보하기 위하여, 하중 측정에 대한 전용 해석 프로그램의 개발을 추진하였다. 본 논문에서는 하중 측정 데이터에 대한 처리 및 해석 과정을 소개하고 해석 프로그램의 개발 과정 및 수행 결과를 보고한다.

  • The particle formation using pyrolysis has many advantages over other particle manufacturing techniques. The particles by pyrolysis have relatively uniform size and chemical composition. Also, we can easily produce high purity particles. Thus, we studied the formation of silicon particles by pyrolysis of 50% $SiH_4$ gas diluted in Ar gas. A pyrolysis furnace was used for the thermal decomposition of $SiH_4$ gas at $800^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure. The aerosol flow from furnace is separated into two ways. The one is to the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) for particle size distribution measurement and the other is to the particle deposition system. The produced silicon particles are deposited on the wafer in the deposition chamber. SEM measurement was used to compare the particle size distribution results from the SMPS. Depending on the experimental conditions, particles of high concentration in the $30\sim80$ nm size range were generated.

Diffusive-Thermal Instability and Buoyancy-Driven Instability in Laminar Attached Free-jet Flames with DC Electric Fields (직류 전기장을 인가한 층류부착화염에서 물질-열 확산 및 부력에 의한 화염진동 비교에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we describe the behavior of two self-excitations in laminar attached free-jet flames under the influence of DC electric fields, one of buoyancy-driven and the other of diffusion-thermal instability, established from the horizontal and vertical injection. In the horizontal injection with removed buoyancy effect, oscillating flames with the frequency of 1.3 - 7.4 Hz were observed in a certain condition with Lewis number more than unity. On the other hand, it was appeared Lewis number induced self-excitation as well as buoyancy-driven self-excitation in the vertical upward injection with DC electric fields. This behavior had frequency range of 1.6 - 9.4 Hz and was exhibited to attribute the buoyancy effect. Finally, a well-defined division about two self-excitations having similar frequency range is briefly discussed.

  • 사이버 침해란 정보시스템의 취약한 부분을 공격하여 시스템 내부에 침입하거나 시스템을 마비/파괴하는 등의 사고를 유발하는 모든 행위를 말한다. 이러한 사이버 침해의 피해를 줄이기 위해 국내외 많은 연구 기관과 업체에서는 침입탐지시스템과 같은 정보보호 기술을 연구 개발하여 상용화하고 있다. 그러나 기존의 정보보호 기술은 이미 발생한 침해를 탐지하여 피해의 확산을 막는 데만 한정적으로 사용되고, 침해의 발생 가능성을 예측하지는 못하기 때문에 점차 첨단화, 다양화되고 있는 사이버 침해에 대응하기 힘들다는 문제점을 갖는다. 본 논문에서는 보안 취약점을 이용한 사이버 침해를 대상으로 전문가 설문을 통해 사이버 침해의 발생 가능성을 예측하는 방법을 제안하고, 이를 위한 사이버 침해 예측 항목을 추출하였다. 예측 항목 추출은 3 단계로 구성되며, 첫 번째 단계에서는 기존 연구와 사례 분석을 통해 예측 항목의 계층 구조를 생성한다. 두 번째 단계에서는 첫 번째 단계를 통해 생성된 예측 항목들을 델파이 방법을 통해 개선하여 최적의 예측 항목을 결정한다. 마지막 단계에서는 각 항목들에 대한 쌍대 비교 설문을 진행하여 항목 간 가중치를 추출한다.
