A total of 165 independently oriented core samples were collected from 19 Cretaceous Yuchon Group sites in Kosong area, the southernmost part of the Miryang subbasin of the Kyongsang Basin in southern Korea. Stepwise AF and thermal cleaning revealed antipodal ChRM from 95 samples from 14 sites. Mean ChRM direction is d=26.0$^{\circ}$, i=49.4$^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}$=8.2$^{\circ}$, k=24.5, n= 14) before bedding correction and d=28.1$^{\circ}$, i=54.2$^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}$=4.8$^{\circ}$, k=70.6, n= 14) after bedding correction. A 2.88-fold increase of the precession parameter k by bedding correction indicates pre-folding age of the ChRM with 99% confidence level. Palaeomagnetic pole position calculated from the mean ChRM is 67.0$^{\circ}$N, 210.6$^{\circ}$E (dp=4.7$^{\circ}$, dm=6.7$^{\circ}$), which is significantly different neither from the poles of other part of the Kyongsang Basin nor those of Eurasia including SCB and NCB. This suggests stable relative position of the study area with regard to other parts of the Kyongsang Basin as well as to Eurasia continent since Cretaceous. Three ploarity reversals in the Kosong Formation in addition to the coexistence of normal and reversed polarities in the overlying Andesites and Welded Tuff suggest, in reference to the worldwide geomagnetic polarity time scale, an Albian to Maastrichtian (polarity chron 32r-31r) age of the Yuchon Group of the study area. An alleged hypothesis of stratigraphical correspondence between the Kosong Formation in the study area and the Tadaepo Formation in Pusan area is, however, not tenable: Not only because the latter shows a short reverse polarity only in its lowest part of the sequence but also because the Andesites overlying it is wholly normally magnetized, in contrast to the frequent reverals in the case of both the Kosong Formation and Andesites above it.
Based on mineral assemblages, field occurrences, the volcanic rocks distributed in the Geumdang Island area are divided into three types: rhyolite, porphyritic rhyolite and intermediated dyke rock. In a diagram of [TAS (total alkali-silica)], rhyolites and porphyritic rhyolites belong to the rhyolite-dacite field and rhyolite field, respectively. As to the times when the rhyolite and porphyritic rhyolite rocks were formed a whole rock K-Ar age was obtained. These absolute age determinations have revealed that the former (rhyolite) has an age of 76-78 Ma and belongs to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) and the latter (porphyritic rhyolite) is 71-72 Ma in age and thus belongs to the boundary between the Campanian and Maastrichtian. These geological ages are associated with the igneous activity of the Yuchon Group which occurred vigorously in the southern part of the Korean peninsula during the Late Cretaceous. The various geological ages of volcanic rocks distributed in the southwestern part of the peninsula and of igneous rocks found in the Cretaceous formation which contain a wide variety of minerals indicate that in this area, volcanic activities continued vigorously as a result of the collision of the Eurasian and Pacific Plates between 108-71 Ma.
Cretaceous volcanics and volcaniclastic sediments are abundantly distributed in the Haenam area located at the tip of the southwestern part of the Yongdong-Kwangju depression zone. The Cretaceous strata correlated with the Yuchon Group of the Kyongsang Supergroup are divided into three formations: Hwawon Formation, Uhangri Formation and Haenam Formation in ascending order. The stratovolcanic Hwawon Formation is mainly composed of andesite and andesitic pyroclastics. The Uhangri Formation is the lacustrine sedimentary deposit. The Haenam Formation is composed of Hwangsan tuff, Haenam tuff, Yongdang tuff, Seoho tuff, and also Acidic lava, both being formed by a cogenetic acidic volcanism. The topographic circular structure of the Cretaceous strata was controlled by the doming of Jurassic Sani granite. Cretaceous volcanism in the study area is characterized by the two stages of intermediate volcanic activity in Cenomanian to Albian, and acidic volcanic activity in Campanian to Coniacian.
Self-potential, VLF-EM and dipole-dipole resistivity methods have been widely used for exploration of conductive sulfide ore deposit, because of the convenience and low cost of field work and the reliability of their results. The geophysical responses for vein-type sulfide outcrop of Changkoom mine located in Bukwi-Myon, Jinan-Gun, Chollabuk-Do were investigated and compared with its drilling results. The geology around the survey area is composed of acidic volcanics and sediments of Yuchon Group. And sulfides bearing pyrite, pyrrotite, galena etc. are deposited in disseminated or vein type within acidic volcanics. Typical geophysical responses were detected from the above vein type ore body, respectively. From the shape and extent of S.P. anomaly, ore body is dipping westward and extending about 50 m. It is detected that the VLF EM response matching the outline of ore zone is considered as indication of dyke dipping westward. And also resistivity response indicating conductive dipping dyke is detected. From drilling results for outcrop and geophysical anomalies, the shape of ore body is vein type dipping about $70^{\circ}W$ and extending about 50 m.
The purpose of this study is to develop the number-operation games and to analyze the effects of the games on mathematical creativity of gifted elementary students. We set up the basic direction and standard of mathematical gifted creativity program and developed the 10 periods games based on the mathematically gifted creative problem solving(MG-CPS) model. And, to find out the change of students' creativity, the test based on the developed program and one group pretest-posttest design was conducted on 20 gifted students. Analysis of data using Leikin's evaluation model of mathematical creativity with Leikin's scoring and categorization frame revealed that gifted students's creativity is improved via the number-operation games.
Laboratory tests of accelerated artificial weathering compared the effects of seawater and acidified distilled water on rock weathering. The experiments simulated chemical and physical weathering of five different types of volcanic rock by applying 45 freeze-thaw cycles using seawater and acidified distilled water (pH 3), both at 70℃. The physical properties and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the rocks were measured after 15 and 45 cycles of artificial weathering. Most of degradation of physical properties appeared within the first 15 cycles, and acidified distilled water had a greater effect than seawater. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistically evaluated the differences in UCS of the different rock types during the tests. The rate of UCS reduction after 45 cycles was similar across the samples, being independent of the rock type and the trend of changes in physical properties. In contrast to the changes in the physical properties, the UCS was more affected by seawater than by acidified distilled water.
Abstrace: The palaeodepositional environment and age of the Cretaceous Hampyeong Basin (southwestern Korea) are reassessed based on new geochemical, lithological, sedimentological, and palaeobotanical data. Results indicate that the Hampyeong Basin was a tectonically active basin comprising predominantly fluvial and lacustrine sediments. Four distinctive facies types have been identified (acidic tuff, black shales/sandstones, red beds, intermediate tuff with tuffaceous conglomerate) and these reflect periods of significant environmental change within the basin and its neighbouring terrains. Volcanism driven by tectonic events provides a source for much of the sediment. The sedimentary sequences compare well with those in the neighbouring Haenam Basin. Sediments of volcanic origin are similar to those of the Neungju Formation of the Yuchon Group. The widespread occurrence of black shales is indicative of extended periods of deposition under anoxic conditions. Measurements of total organic carbon show that the values for the black shales (0.81% to 1.75%) are the average for petroleum source shales. Fossil plants occurred in the black shales and sandstones. The occurrence of platanoid leaves places these sediments in Oishi's angiosperm series, which is consistent with an Aptian/Albian or younger age.
Chonnam and Kyongsang clay alteration areas are distributed in volcanic fields of the Yuchon Group in late Cretaceous period. The host rock of the Chonnam alteration area is generally acidic and that of the Kyongsang alteration area is acidic to dominantly intermediate volcanics. The important difference of two alteration areas is source of fluid; the Chonnam alteration area is characterized by dominantly meteoric water and the Kyongsang alteration area is characterized by dominantly magmatic water. Accordingly, the high temperature minerals such as pyrophyllite and andalusite, and boron bearing minerals such as dumortierite and tourmaline are common in the Kyongsang alteration area. In contrast to this, the lower temperature minerals such as kaolin and alunite are common in the Chonnam alteration area. The mineralogical difference of two alteration areas were depended on the difference of the formation temperature of clay deposits. The other important geochemical difference is the chemistry of hydrothermal solution such as pH. The alteration of "acid-sulfate type" with alteration mineral assemblage of alunite-kaolin-quartz is dominant in the Chonnam alteration area, which was caused by the attack of strong acid and acid solution. In contrast to this, the that of "quartz-sericite type" with the mineral assemblage of sericite-quartz is dominant in the Kyongsang alteration area, which was caused by the attack of neutral or weak acid solution. Also, the Kyongsang and Chonnam alteration areas show the difference in structural setting; the Chonnam alteration area is commonly associated with silicic domes and the Kyongsang alteration area is commonly associated with calderas.
