Short-term Variation of Sea Surface Temperature Caused by Typhoon Nabi in the Eastern Sea of Korean Peninsula Derived from Satellite Data (위성영상에서 관측한 태풍 Nabi 통과시의 한반도 동부해역 수온의 단기변동)

  • A remarkable sea surface cooling (SSC) event was observed in the eastern sea of Korean peninsula based on new generation sea surface temperature (NGSST) satellite images in September 2005, when typhoon Nabi passed over the East Sea. The degree of SSC ranged from $1^{\circ}C\;to\;4^{\circ}C$, and its maximum was observed in the southeastern sea area. Daily variations in sea surface temperature at a longitudinal line $(35^{\circ}-41^{\circ}N,\;132^{\circ}E)$, derived from satellite data for September 1-13, 2005, showed that the SSC lasted about 3 days after the typhoon passed in the south of $39^{\circ}N$, whereas it was unclear in the north of$39^{\circ}N$. Water temperature measured by a mooring buoy suggested that the SSC was caused mainly by a vertical mixing of the water column driven by the typhoon, rather than by coastal upwelling.

Effects of Supplemental Fermented Agro By-products Diet on the Growth Performances, Blood Characteristics and Carcass Traits in Fattening Pigs

  • Effects of a supplemental fermented agro by-products diet on growth performance, blood characteristics and carcass traits were investigated in fattening pigs. The fermented diet mainly contained 38.0% brewer's grain, 25.0% rice bran and 21.0% byproduct of king oyster mushrooms. The mixed ingredients were fermented at $40^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and fed to crossbred barrow pigs for 62 days. Ninety pigs were housed in 10 head per pen with three replicate pens per treatment. The pigs in the control group were fed with formula feed, while the pigs in T1 group were fed 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% fermented diet substituted with formula feed on 1 week interval. Pigs in T2 group were fed 30, 60 and 100% fermented diet substituted with formula feed on 1 week interval. The fermented diet significantly (p<0.05) decreased body weight gain and feed efficiency of pigs. The blood characteristics differed with diet types. Carcass grade was significantly better (p<0.05) in the pigs fed fermented diet than in the pigs fed control diet as well as ratio of high grade was higher in the fermented diet groups. Therefore, although a dietary of fermented diet decreased growth performance and feed efficiency, it improved the carcass grade in pigs.

Comparison of Antibacterial Ability of Air Filter Media Treated with a Natural Antibacterial Agent by Three Treatment Methods (항균성 천연물질의 도포방법에 따른 에어필터 여재의 항균 특성 비교)

  • Various antimicrobial technologies have been developed to inactivate bioaerosols in indoor environments. In this study, air filter media were treated with a natural antibacterial agent of Sophora flavescens in order to inactivate the bacteria collected on the air filter. Three treatment methods were applied to manufacture the test antibacterial air filter media: electrospray, nebulization and dip-coating methods. In case of electrospray and nebulization processes, the size distribution of aerosolized natural antibacterial agent was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer. Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria were aerosolized to test inactivation of the filter media treated with a natural antibacterial agent. The pressure drop and the antibacterial efficiency of the filter media increased with increasing the mass loading of natural antibacterial agent in each treatment method. The antibacterial efficiency per loaded antibacterial agent mass by the electrospray method was the highest and the filter treated by the dip-coating method was the lowest among three treatment methods.

  • In this study, we propose a model for constructing a producer-centered self-publishing repository for the personal digital records and three operational process for practical application of the operational model. 1) As essential requirements for constructing a DSpace-based self-publishing repository, we propose producer-centered service provision, management subject, operation and management plan, how to activate the repository of digital personal records producers, copyright issues, development and dissemination process. 2) The repository model constructs a producer-centered circular structure considering these requirements. 3) Through a repository model with multiple agencies, it provides various services such as content distribution, keyword search, usage statistics, recommendation system, and open access to portal users and electronic publishers as well as individual users.

Physiological and Histological Characteristics of Starry Flounder Platichthys stellatus after Starvation and Re-feeding (절식 후 먹이 재 공급시 강도다리P(latichthys stellatus)의 생리·조직학적 특성)

  • This study was conducted to determine the physiological and histological characteristics of starry flounder Platichthys stellatus juveniles to undergo a short/long starvation period and subsequent re-feeding with 2 weeks interval for 65 days. All findings from this study indicate the possibility of a very rapid recovery possibility of starry flounder after short starvation period for 2 or 4 weeks. The mean body weight after 2 and 4 weeks starvation were not significantly different after 65 days. However, the body weight of 6 and 8 weeks starved fishes showed significantly low value than 2 weeks starved fishes. All biomarkers, liver somatic index, RNA/DNA ratio and blood chemistry, in this study showed fast recovery possibility after re-feeding of starry flounder. During the starvation and recovery process, they showed distinct increasing and decreasing tendency. From 21-28 days after re-feeding, most biomarkers reached to their maximum value and thereafter decreased again in 2, 4 and 6 weeks starvation and re-feeding groups. It could be interpreted as a compensatory growth and strategical action against starvation.

  • Distension of hydrops is the pathosis that the hydration is retented in abdomen and that is caused by disturbance of hydrometabolism. Most of hydrops belongs to Consolidation. In part of OhRyungJinAek-Byeul of Youngchu"靈樞 五癃津液別", the general explanation of hydrops is briefed. But there was nothing about pathogenesis, pathology, symptoms and the method of treatment. The part SuChang of Youngchu "靈樞 水脹" divided it by Superficial-swelling, Hidden-swelling, Ovarian-hydrops, Stony-uterin-mass and explained it to cure by Category of pathology. So, the books JeByeongWonHuRon"諸病源候論" ChonGeumYoBang"千金要方", WoiDaeBiYo"外臺秘要", TaePyeungSeongHyeBang"太平聖惠方", BoJeBang"普濟方", EuiHakGangMok"醫學綱目", DongEuiBoGam"東醫寶鑑" etc. published later, show the method of treatments and medications with quotation the original text of this part. And it is convinced that more profound research of this part is inevitable to understand the correct meaning of hydrops that explained by many of ancient medical scholars, and to apply it to clinical medicine. There is an explanation on Distension hydrops in the prologue of this part. And t six kinds of disease in this part is simila to edema, so it is called SuChang"水脹", pathology of Edema. Superficial-swellin Hidden-Swelling is reported in the fir chapter, differential diagnosis of Ovarian-hydrops, Stony-uterin-mass is rep in the second chapter, and treatment Superficial swelling. Hidden Swelling reported in the third chapter. Briefly looking over that chapter, Distension of hydrops is recognized as stay of hydration at the abdomen as a result of disturbance of hydrometabolism and it says about symtoms, pathogenesis, pathology, differential diagnosis, treatment of Hydrops Superficial-swelling Hidden-swelling Ovarian-hydrops Stony-uterinmass. And it says about a few things that Superficial-swelling, Hidden-swelling could be differentiated by colors of skin and distension of abdomen, and Ovarian-hydrops, Stony-ulerin-mass could be differentiated that it occurs which sex and whether mensturation occurs or not, and treatment of Superficial-swelling, Hidden-swelling, Ovarian-hydrops.

Effect of Fabrication Method of Anode on Performance in Enzyme Fuel Cells (효소연료전지의 Anode 제조조건이 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Enzyme fuel cells were operated with cells composed of enzyme anode and PEMFC cathode. Enzyme anodes was fabricated by compression of a mixture of graphite particle, glucose oxidase(Gox) as a enzyme and ferrocene as a redox mediator, and then coated with Nafion ionomer solution. Performances of enzyme unit cell were measured with variation of anode manufacture factors, to find optimum condition of enzyme anode. Optimum pressure was 8.89MPa for enzyme anode pressing process. Highest power density was obtained at 60% graphite composition in enzyme anode. Optimum glucose concentration was 1.7 mol/l in anode substrate solution. The enzyme anode was stabilized by two times of deeping in Nafion solution for 1 sec.

  • Mobile IP allows mobile end-systems to maintain on-going connections while moving to other links. Based on the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), mobile IPv6 provides a set of new mobility functions such as route optimization in addition to the functions in mobile IPv4. This paper describes the hardware-based mobile IPv6 implementation which provides all the mobility functionalities in hardware. The hardware-based mobile IPv6 provides faster mobility support than software-based implementation as well as it reduces the number of packet losses which can be caused during the movement. In end-systems equipped with hardware-based mobility support, the CPU can concentrate more on running application programs without wasting its effort for mobility support, and hence it is expected the overall performance improvement.

  • Protoplasts of the wild type strain of Pleurotus osteatus were mutagenized with UV light, and 3,000 colonies were examined for abnormal mycelial and fruiting phenotypes. Forty one strains displayed variant phenotypes in mycelia and fruiting processes. The variant phenotypes were classified into 6 groups: (1) auxotrophic strains, which are incapable of growing on minimal media and can only grow when provided with their specific requirements; (2) abnormal vegetative strains, which grow very slowly on minimal and complete media; (3) primordiumless strains, which fail to develop to the formation of primordia; (4) maturationless strains, which form primordia, but do not form mature fruiting bodies; (5) specifically colored strains, which have Specific bluish grey or bluish white pileus; (6) poorly spored strains, which fail to produce basidiospore or which produce few spores. These variant strains may be useful in genetic breeding programs and for the studies of fungal development and genetics.

Quality Characteristics and Antioxidant Activity of Syrup Added with Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Extract (마카 추출액 첨가에 따른 시럽의 품질특성과 항산화성)

  • This study was conducted to develop a functional syrup by using maca extract. Five different levels (0%, 7%, 14%, 21%, 28%) of maca extract was added and the physicochemical properties were investigated. The pH of control syrup was lower than that of syrup added with maca extract. Viscosity increased with increasing amount of maca extract. Hunter L value decreased while b value increased as maca extract level increased. Results of consumer acceptance test revealed that no significant differences in flavor, sweet taste and overall acceptability were observed among samples. Therefore, it is suggested that maca extract can be incorporated into syrup up to 28% without depressing the quality. Total polyphenol content and DPPH radical, superoxide anion radical and hydroxyl radical scavenging tests were conducted in view of estimating the functionality of maca syrup. Results showed that incorporation of maca extract into syrup exhibited higher polyphenol content and DPPH radical and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity than control syrup (p<0.05).
