  • Genetic selection and sophisticated management technology have produced modern sows which excel in litter size and milk production. Recent research has identified nutritional innovations which may enhance productivity of the high producing sow. Selected research in three areas which have the potential to enhance reproductive performance are summarized in this report. First, preliminary evidence indicates that organic chromium may enhance litter size and conception rate. Secondly, high producing sows, particularly primiparous sows, required higher protein/lysine in late gestation and or lactation to optimize weaning weight and subsequent litter size. Valine and isoleucine, but not leucine, have been shown to enhance milk production. Phased feeding programs with diet cost partitioned toward gilts and away form parity 3 to 8 sows have been suggested as a means of improving reproductive performance in young sows. Lastly, recent research with sufficient sow numbers to document the effect of dietary fiber on reproductive performance has shown that sows fed fiber farrowed and weaned more pigs.

  • Objectives : The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the effects of Bojangjisa-tang on anticatharsis by using mice and Guinea pigs. Methods : We observed the actions on gastrointestinal smooth muscles, on the transportability of small and large intestines and on diarrhea induced by castor oil, philocarpine, and barium chloride. Results : Bojangjisa-tang showed alleviation of the contraction of gastrointestinal smooth muscles induced by acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. The transportability of the large intestine was constrained by Bojangjisa-tang, which also showed substantial anti-cathartic effects on diarrhea induced by castor oil, philocarpine and barium chloride. Conclusion : These results demostrate that Bojangjisa-tang has advantageous effects on drug-induced diarrhea and will contribute to the development of diarrhea treatment through further related studies.

  • The reservoir hosts of Thelazia callipaeda were examined. The eyes of the 76 does raised at farm, 78 military dogs (shepherds), 96 cattle, and 105 pies were investigated for the presence of eyeworm. Among them, six worms of T. callipaeda were collected from two dogs raised at farm (2.7%) , and 188 worms from 26 shepherds (33.5%). No worms were recovered from the cattle or pigs, These results suggest that the dogs. especially the military dogs are serving as a reservoir host of T. callipaeda in Korea.

  • The serotypes and pathogenicity of 47 isolates of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from pigs with acute septicemic swine erysipelas were investigated. The serotypes were determiend by agar gel precipitation test using autoclave extracted antigens. All of the 47 isolates(42 strains from Youngnam and fi fotrains from Kyunggi province) were serotype lao Five field isolates of Erhusiopathiae serovar la were tested for pathogenicity in mice. All of 5 selected isolates were pathogenic for mice and $LD_{50}$ was $3.7{\times}10^3$ viable cells. Mice immunized subcutaneously with live vaccine did not die after challenge with virulent isolates of E rhusiopathiae.

  • The aim of the present study was to improve commercial twice-a-day Acebrophylline formulation to once-a-day new formulation to improve patient compliances. To develop the double-layered tablet, the sustained release layer was prepared using Eudragit$^{(R)}$ L100-55 and Carnauba wax. The sustained release layer has shown delayed release rates in pH 1.2 which comparable to that of performed in pH 6.8 buffer. In the comparative pharmacokinetic study with commercialized Surfolase$^{(R)}$, the present double-layered Acebrophylline tablet has shown similar pharmacokinetic parameters of AUC, $C_{max}$ and $T_{max}$ values.

  • In our previous study, ethylacetate fraction of white ginseng (root of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) extract inhibited mushroom tyrosinase activity and melanin production in melanocytes. This study examined its effects on the expression of melanin biosynthesis-related enzymes to explore the depigmenting pathway. Moreover, depigmenting effect on animal skin was examined using UV-B induced hyperpigmented skin of brown guinea pigs. The ethylacetate fraction of the white ginseng extract exhibited depigmenting activity in the skin of brown guinea pig without visible edema. In addition, this fraction reduced tyrosinase expression in melanocytes. The results suggested that ethylacetate fraction of white ginseng extract might be used as skin depigmenting material by inhibition of tyrosinase activity and expression.

  • Fourteen African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks occurred in the pig farms in the northwestern region of South Korea, near the border with North Korea, from September 16, 2019 to October 9, 2019. Active and passive surveillance on the ASF-infected farms indicated that the infection was limited only to pigsties where the infected pigs were detected on the farm for the first time before further transmission to other pigsties and farms. This early detection could be one of the pivotal factors for the prompt eradication of ASF in domestic pig farms within 1 month in the northwestern region of South Korea.

  • Porcine parvovirus 7 (PPV7) was first detected in Korean pig farms in 2017. The detection rate of PPV7 DNA was 24.0% (30/125) in aborted pig fetuses and 74.9% (262/350) in finishing pigs, suggesting that PPV7 has circulated among Korean domestic pig farms. Phylogenetic analysis based on capsid protein amino acid sequences demonstrated that the nine isolated Korean strains (PPV-KA1-3 and PPV-KF1-6) were closely related to the previously reported USA and Chinese PPV7 strains. In addition, the Korean strains exhibit genetic diversity with both insertion and deletion mutations. This study contributes to the understanding of the molecular epidemiology of PPV7 in Korea.
