Comparison of Gangji-hwan-1, 2, 3, 4 and Combination of Gangji-hwan-1 and Gamisoche-hwan in the Reducing Effects of Body Weight in a High Fat Diet-Fed Obese Mice (고지방식이 비만마우스 모델에서 파키스탄산 및 중국산 마황으로 조성된 강지환(降脂丸)-1, 2, 3, 4와 강지환(降脂丸)-1합가미소체환(合加味消滯丸)의 체중감량효과 비교)

  • Objectives: This study was investigated the improvement effects of Pakistani Ephedra herba-containing Gangji-hwan-1, 2, 3 (Di-fatty; DF-1, 2, 3), Chinese Ephedra herba-containing Gangjihwan-4 (DF-4) and combination of DF-1 and Gamisoche-hwan (GSH) on obesity in a high fat diet-fed obese mouse model. Methods: Eight-week-old C57BL/6N mice were divided into seven groups: a normal lean group given a standard diet, an obese control group given a high fat diet, and DF-1, 2, 3, 4, and DF-1+GSH groups given a high fat diet with DF-1, 2, 3, 4 (40, 80, 160, 80 mg/kg), and DF-1+ GSH (80 mg/kg), respectively. After 8 weeks of treatment, body weight gain, feeding efficiency ratio (FER), blood lipid markers, liver histology, and fat weight and histology were examined. Results: Body weight gain was significantly decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. The extent of decreases was eminent in DF-1+GSH group. FER and circulating concentration of leptin were decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. Circulating concentrations of triglyceride, glucose and insulin were decreased in DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control. The size of adipocytes were decreased by DF and DF-1+GSH groups compared with control, whereas the adipocyte number per unit area was increased by them, suggesting that DF and DF-1+GSH groups decreased the number of large adipocytes. Conclusions: In conclusion, these results suggest that DF and DF-1+GSH groups decrease FER, plasma leptin concentration, blood anti-obesity biomarkers and fat mass, improves body weight gain. In addition, these effects were more effective in DF-1+GSH combination group than in DF-1, 2, 3, 4 groups.

Antibacterial and Growth Inhibitory Effects of Liriope Platyphylla Ethanol Extract on Streptococcus Mutnas and Porphyromonas Gingivalis (맥문동 에탄올 추출물(Liriope platyphylla ethanol extract)의 Streptococcus mutnas와 Porphyromonas gingivalis에 대한 항균력과 성장억제 효과)

  • Purpose : This study aimed to analyze the antibacterial activity of Liriope platyphylla ethanol extract (LPEE) against Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis and to validate its potential for the prevention and treatment of dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Methods : To verify the antibacterial effect of L. pulsatilla ethanolic extract (LPEE) against S. mutans and P. gingivalis, the disk diffusion method was used to determine the inhibition zones at concentrations of 50, 100, 200, and 300 mg/㎖. To determine the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), the final dose of LPEE was .2, .4, .8, 1.6, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/㎖, and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was determined based on the MIC results. To confirm the growth inhibitory effect of LPEE on both pathogens, the absorbance was measured at 600 nm after each incubation for 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hr at concentrations of .8, 1.6, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/㎖. Results : The cytotoxicity of LPEE was evaluated and the cell viability was more than 70 % at 400 mg/㎖. Therefore, concentrations of 50, 100, 200, and 300 mg/㎖ were used in this study. The antimicrobial effect against S. mutans was seen at 100 mg/㎖ and grew in a concentration-dependent manner, while P. gingivalis was effective at 50 mg/㎖ with the dose dependency. The MIC was .8 mg/㎖ for both strains, and the MBC was 1.6 mg/㎖ with the same results. The growth inhibitory effect of LPEE on S. mutans and P. gingivalis was observed, even at low concentrations. Conclusion : The antibacterial effect of LPEE was evaluated through the analysis of MIC, MBC, and growth inhibition effect on S. mutans and P. gingivalis, which suggests LPEE might have the possibility of utilization as a preventive and therapeutic composition for oral diseases.

Visual Acuity and Spectacles-wearing Rate of Students of an Elementary School in Gwang Ju City (광주지역 초등학생들의 시력과 안경 착용률에 관한 연구)

  • Research was taken its place in Dong wun elementary school in Gwang ju city. Subject ages were somewhere around 9 to 13. Among total number of 1,196, subjects with emmetropia were 384 people (32.1%), with 22.56% of 9 year old students, 16.01% of 10 year old student, 36.45% of 12 year old student, 39.11% of 13 year old. When age increases, the rate of emmetropia increase as well. Gender dependence of emmetropia rato was 31.07% for boys and 33.33% for girls, which proves girls with higher emmetropia ratio than boys. Among subjects with binocular vision acuity lower than 0.7, those require spectacles, only 37.5% of 9 years old students, 30.3% of 10 year old students, 44.64% of 12 year old students, and 30% of 9 year old students were wearing glasses. It shows that spectacle-wearing ratio is very low in spite of visual acuty lower than 0.7.

  • Global warming has been widely recognized as a serious problem threatening the future of human beings. It is caused by the buildup in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Particularly, SF6 has extremely high global warming potential compare to those of other global warming gases. One option for mitigating this greenhouse gas is the development of an effective process for capturing and separating these gases from anthropogenic sources. In general, gas hydrates can be formed under high pressure and low temperature. However, SF6 gas is known to form hydrate under relatively milder conditions. Therefore, technological and economical effects could be expected for the separation of SF6 gas from waste gas mixtures. In this study, we carried out morphological study for the SF6 hydrate crystals to understand its formation and growth mechanisms. The observations were made in high-pressure optical cell charged with liquid water and SF6 gas at constant pressure and temperature. Initially SF6 hydrate formed at the surface between gas and liquid regions, and then subsequent dendrite crystals grew at the wall above the gas/water interface. The visual observations of crystal nucleation, migration, growth and interference were reported. The detailed growth characteristics of SF6 hydrate crystals were discussed in this study.

$CO_2$ Separation in Pre-Combustion using Principles of Gas hydrate Formation (연소전 탈탄소화 적용을 위한 $CO_2/H_2$ 하이드레이트 형성 및 분리 연구)

  • 화력발전이 많은 비중을 차지하는 전력생산 산업은 온실가스($CO_2$)의 최대 배출 원으로 알려져 있으며 증가하는 전력 수요 뿐 만 아니라 다가오는 기후변화협약에 대응하기 위하여 $CO_2$ 회수 및 공정 개선에 관한 연구가 많이 수행되고 있다. 특히 현재 연구되고 있는 전력분야의 대표적인 $CO_2$ 회수기술은 연소 후 포집(Post-combustion capture), 순산소 연소(Oxy-fuel combustion), 연소전 탈탄소화(Pre-combustion) 3가지로 구분된다. 이중 연소전 탈탄소화 기술은 석탄가스화복합발전(IGCC) 기술과 연계하여 $CO_2$를 회수할 수 있는 방법으로 가스화 된 석탄가스에 Water-Gas Shift 반응과, $CO_2$ 분리로 얻어진 탈 탄소 연료를 통해서 전력을 생산한다. 이 기술의 핵심은 생성된 $CO_2/H_2$ 복합가스로부터 $CO_2$를 분리하는 공정으로 차세대 회수 기술로는 Membrance Reactor, SOFC, Oxygen Ion Transfer Membrane(OTM), 그리고 가스 하이드레이트가 있다. 이중 가스 하이드레이트는 $CO_2$의 회수 뿐 만 아니라 처리 기술에도 적용 가능하지만 우리나라에는 이에 관한 기술이 전무한 형편이다. 본 연구에서는 가스 하이드레이트 형성원리를 이용하여 정온 정압 조건에서 $CO_2/H_2$ 하이드레이트를 제조하였으며 특히, 하이드레이트 형성 촉진제인 THF(Tetrahydrofuran)를 첨가하여 THF 농도에 따른 상평형 및 속도론 실험을 수행 하였다. 이러한 연구는 연소전 탄소화 기술에서의 $CO_2$ 회수 분리에 대한 핵심 연구임과 동시에 탄소배출권 규제에 실질적인 기여를 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
