Development of equipment for tumor cauterization

  • Equipment to cauterize tumors by an electrically heated Kanthal wire is under development. The wire( alloy of iron, chromium and Aluminum) keeps sufficient strength up to 1400 degrees in Celsius. Although AC 50Hz current source is used in the prototype experiment, RF current will be used in future. The diameter of the Kanthal wire was 0.3 mm which was connected to Kanthal wire of 0.8 mm. The thicker wire was used as a leading wire. The possibility of application of the heating wire in combination with an ultrasound endoscope was determined, where ultrasound endoscope is to be used to monitor the location on the wire and an extent of a tumor in digestive organs. This procedure requires the wire to be applied inside ultrasound transmitting media. First, the wire was applied in the degassed water in which a chicken liver sample was submerged. The wire, however, burned out in water soon after it became red-hot at 12 A. The reason is that large current is required for the wire to become red-hot due to strong convection. Starch paste of 3 weight percent was employed instead of water. This made the wire red-hot approximately at 6 A, showing the increased viscosity of the starch decreased the convection and the wire was cover by the steam. The liver sample was cauterized successively, while the location of the wire and the liver was monitored by an ultrasound diagnosis equipment outside the plastic vessel of the starch paste.

General Workers Living with Younger Children in Fukushima Performed more Preventive Behavior against Radiation during and after the Nuclear Disaster

  • Background: During and after the Fukushima nuclear disaster (FND), many parents were concerned about the effects of radiation on the health of their children. Purpose: To clarify the factors that influenced general workers living with children and the effect of child age groups in implementing preventive behaviorsagainst radiation following the FND. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study of preventive behaviors among general workers was carried out 3-5 months after the nuclear disaster. The subjects were 1,394 regular workers, who took part in radiation seminars run by the Fukushima Occupational Health Promotion Center between July and September, 2011. In total, 1,217 responses were submitted, of which 1,110 were eligible for the present study. This anonymous questionnaire survey inquired about the presence and age of children in the household and about radiation preventive behavior implemented after the FND. The contribution of each variable was assessed by logistic regression analysis. Results: General workers in Fukushima who lived with younger children performed more preventive behavior against radiation during and after the FND. In particular, both location-related and daily routines were practiced significantly more frequently (p<0.01) by workers living with a child in the age ranges of 0-6 (8 of 10 items) and 7-12 (5 of 10 items). Conclusions: This is the first study to assess the positive association between living with children by age group and increased preventive behavior against radiation implemented by general workers after the FND.

의료사고에서의 형사책임 -원내감염사고의 해결을 향하여- (The Criminal Liability of Physicians in the Case of Medical Accidents)

  • 예전부터 일본에서 의료사고가 형사사건으로 취급되는 경우는 드물었다. 하지만 요코하마시립대학병원과 같은 중대한 의료과오가 발생한 이후 검사가 의료과오를 기소하는 태도를 보이고 있다. 의료사고는 의료관계자간 역할분담의 형태가 과실 인정에서 중요한 하나의 요소가 된다. 요코하마시립병원사건에서는 환자의 동일성확인에 관하여 의료관계자 사이에 역할분담이 확립되지 않은 경우에는 관계자 전원이 환자의 동일성을 확인하여야 할 의무가 있다고 하였다. 또 사이타마 의과대학병원사건에서는 치료에 신중할 필요가 있는 중대한 증례에 관해서는 그 증례를 담당하는 주치의 뿐 만 아니라 대학병원의 과장도 치료방침에 관하여 확인할 의무가 있다고 하였다. 현립 오오노병원사건에서 무죄판결이 내려진 이후는 형사소추에 신중을 기할 필요가 있다는 목소리가 강해지고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 후생노동성은 의료사고방지를 위해 의료사고조사제도를 도입하여 의료사고에 제3자기관에 의한 검증의 강화를 도모하고 있다.

ON-DOCK 서비스 시스템이 부산항 경쟁력 향상에 미치는 영향 (On the Effect of ON-DOCK System to the Sharpening of Competitiveness Edge of the Pusan Port)

  • Port competition is generally classified into two type of inter-domestic ports and intermational ports and the latter is measured how to secure the function of intermediacy for foreign cargoes among competing parts. In the Northeast Asia top 20 world container ports such as Pusan, Kobe, Yokohama and Kaohsiung are struggling to induce transshipment containers generated in the North China region. This paper aims to analyze and evaluate the competitive factors of the said ports such as port site facilities expenses service level and flexibility of management and operations and suggest the feasible strategies that the Pusan Port to be viable transshipment center in the region. The evaluation is attempted twice. First attempt is evaluated by present conditions of each port and second attempt by upgraded conditions of evaluation value such as port service level and flexibility of port management and operations resulted from the implementation of the ON-DOCK service system. The results of evaluation are as follows; (1) Port competitiveness of first evaluation is ranked in Kobe=Kaohsiung >Pusan>Yokohama. (2) Second evaluation is resulted in Kobe> Pusan= Kaohsiung>Yokohama. According to this results the competitiveness edge of the Pusan Port is able to strengthen by implementation of the ON-DOCk system.

Relationship between threatened vascular plants and the human population in Japan

  • Using data sets for Japan as a whole, as arranged with approximately $10{\times}10$ km squares (a secondary grid), we investigated the relationship between population density and the habitats of threatened vascular plants listed in the Japanese Red Data Book; depopulated areas in the present and future, areas where under-use may be serious, and those with a predominance of elderly people; and the present state of the habitats in terms of a characteristic land use pattern. Regarding the habitats of threatened vascular plants, the progress of deterioration [$(N_{CR}+N_{EN})/(N_{CR}+N_{EN}+N_{VU})$] in depopulated areas has been confirmed, where $N_{CR}$, $N_{EN}$, and $N_{VU}$ are the numbers of species classified as critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable, respectively. Moreover, in grid squares used by a human such as farmland, the progress of the deterioration simply increases when population density becomes low. However, for many vascular plants, they are particularly endangered in populous areas. Local populations will decrease throughout Japan with the rate of depopulation in and around large cities being relatively slow. We also propose some issues that need further study. The deterioration by human activity may be reduced. On the other hand, some vascular plants may be adversely influenced by depopulation. Additionally, we should keep a close watch on grasslands and water areas in large cities to preserve vascular plants.

H$_2$의 연소한계에 미치는 F$_2$와 CIF$_3$의 영향 (The Effects of CIF$_3$and F$_2$on the Flammability Limit of H$_2$)

  • Hydrogen(H$_2$) is used in the semiconductor industries, and some oxidizing gases such as fluoride(F$_2$) and chlorine trifluoride(CIF$_3$) are also used. As F$_2$and CIF$_3$are highly oxidizing gases, it were supposed to react vigorously with H$_2$. In this study, the flammability limit of F$_2$/$H_2$/Ar and CIF$_3$/$H_2$/Ar mixtures were investigated experimentally. As a result, it was found that the diluted F$_2$gas could be spontaneously ignited as compared to CIF$_3$mixture gas while being mixed with the diluted H$_2$gas. However, CIF$_3$diluted gas was not able to ignite spontaneously except for an electric spark. And the combustion characteristics and reaction kinetics were shown at the different diluted gases by the flammability diagram analyses between the F$_2$/$H_2$/Ar and CIF$_3$/$H_2$/Ar.

Contention-based Reservation Protocol Using a Counter for Detecting a Source Conflict in WDM Single-hop Optical Network with Non-equivalent Distance

  • We propose a new channel reservation protocol which can reduce message delay by using a counter for detection of d source conflict in a WDM single-hop network with non-equivalent propagation delay. A source convict occurs when a source node has the right to transmit more than or equal to two messages simultaneously, which are transmitted using different wavelengths. In such a case, the source node has to newly obtain the right to transmit the message. In the proposed protocol, by using a source conflict counter a source node can detect a source conflict before a wave-length assignment is performed. Therefore, the source node can start a procedure to newly obtain the right to transmit the message which cannot be transmitted due to a source conflict. We analyse the throughput performance by taking the effect of a source conflict into account, and show that the approximate analysis and the computer simulated results are close. Also, from computer simulated results, we show that our proposed protocol can reduce mean message delay dramatically without degrading throughput performance as the offered load becomes large.

  • Recently, autonomous robots which can achieve the complex tasks have been required with the advance of robotics. Advanced robot vision for recognition is necessary for the realization of such robots. In this paper, we propose a method to recognize an object in the actual environment. We assume that a 3D-object model used in our proposal method is the voxel data. Its inside is full up and its surface has color information. We also define the word "recognition" as the estimation of a target object's condition. This condition means the posture and the position of a target object in the actual environment. The proposal method consists of three steps. In Step 1, we extract features from the 3D-object model. In Step 2, we estimate the position of the target object. At last, we estimate the posture of the target object in Step 3. And we experiment in the actual environment. We also confirm the performance of our proposal method from results.

EARLY EVENTS OCCURRING DURING LIGHT SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION IN PLANTS AND FUNGI

  • Light signals constitute major factors in regulating gene expression and morphogenesis in plants and fungi. Phytochrome A and B were well characterized red and far-red light receptors in plants. Red light signals increased the phosphorylation of 18 kDa protein, which was identified to be nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) kinase. The NDP kinase catalyzed autophosphorylation and had a protein kinase activity similar to MAP (mitogen activated protein) kinase. As candidates for blue light photoreceptors, cDNAs for CRY1 and CRY2 were isolated. The N-teminal regions of these proteins showed a high hornology to DNA photolyase. The 120 kDa protein first detected in Pisurn sativurn, which showed blue light induced phosphorylation was also detected in Arabidopsis thaliana. The 120 kDa protein was encoded by the nphl gene, which regulated positive phototropism of the plant. In Neurospora crassa, blue light irradiation of the membrane fraction prepared from roycelia stimulated the phosphorylation of the 15 kDa protein, which was also identifmd to be an NDP kinase. Recent progress in understanding early events in light signal transduction mainly in Pisum sativum Alaska, Arabidopsis thaliana and Neurospora crassa was summarized.

Si3N4/SiC 복합 세라믹의 온도에 따른 크랙 힐링 관찰과 확산거동 (Crack Healing Behavior with Healing Temperature in Si3N4/SiC Composite Ceramics)

  • To investigate the microcrack healing behavior of $Si_3N_4-20wt\%SiC-8wt\%Y_2O_3$ composite ceramics(SNCY8), we observe the crack length evolution a! the time of 20, 40, 60 minutes with in-situ optical microscopy by varying healing temperature of $800\~1200^{\circ}C$. Crack healing obviously occurred as heating temperature and time increased. We proposed a simple model of effective diffusion based on the crack length evolution with healing condition, and determined the effective diffusion coefficient as Our result implies that we may predict the healing ability quantitatively with temperature and time in structural ceramics through the effective diffusion coefficient model.
