Functional neurology is a function-oriented clinical neurology with a focus on the viability, functionality, and balance of the neurologic system, which may be considered as a form of yin-yang balance medicine like Korean medicine. While it incorporates knowledge systems such as developmental neurology, neuropsychology, comparative neuroanatomy, and others, it views the neurologic system and the body as an individually different, self-regulating mechanism with the help of the active balancing mechanism within the nervous system and between the individual and the environment, which view is at the core of its effort to improve and serve the human dignity based on the best possible functioning nervous system. This article reviews core concepts of the functional neurology, discusses yin-yang balance medicine perspectives and clinical applications of it.

The universe has its order of yang and yin : all creation are continuously generated, grow and die, which is the results of the harmonious operation by yang and yin. Among all creation, the human is one of the samjae(three bases of the world, which are heaved earth, and man) and he is from the combined sukhi(a superior khi) of yang and yin. And human life itself is basically a condensed jonghyul (life blood) and at the same time it is only a transient joining of sadae(the four elements of earth, air, fire and water). Yang and yin, the two axes of the world, therefore. are the most crucial and fundamental concept to explain the generation and extinction of alt creation, to understand people in time and space. to find out the reality of human life as an organism, and, at last, to observe the state of human health. If so, what is the most essential idea in yang and yin\ulcorner It is taegeuk(chungkhi) or tao(of one yang and one yin). If the property of heaven and earth is kongon, taegeuk is a khi and tao a principle. And it can be said that a human body is merely a union of hyung and khi, that human life is an essence of sambo, jeongkhishin, that human health is a harmoninzed coordination of yang and yin because it is from the combined sukhi of yang and yin. Hyung. a vessel for sambo, jeongkhishin, is at the bottom and shin is on the top : the personality and the disposition of individuals differ according to their working. Thus. on the basis of the above discussion. the following can be offered as some suggestions for Korean Nursing Theory. Though human beings are part of Nature, they are the most eminent microcosm among all creation. So, as a subjet for nursing, a person should be understood with khijok kyoryu rather than with logical thinking, then mutual trust between the patient and the nurse can be established. The health of a person depends on the harmony of yang and yin. To be healthy, a person should consider harmonization with Nature(including his surroundings) as well as a balanced human relationships in society. Moreover, it is crucial for each person to obtain hoshim as a method of mind control rather than to only treat the symptoms of disease.

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effect of cold stress on heart rate variability and peripheral blood flow by Doppler ultrasound in healthy subjects. Methods: We classified the subjects by their Yin or Yang tendency using a Yin-Yang questionnaire. Cold stress was taken on the left hand of subjects for 10 seconds. Heart rate variability and peripheral blood flow were measured on the right radial artery before and after cold stress. Results: The Yang tendency group showed a significant decrease of heart rate after cold stress which was not seen in the Yin tendency group. The Yang tendency group showed a decrease of LF, total power, and increase of HF after cold stress, while the Yin tendency group showed the opposite. However, there were no statistically significant differences of heart rate variability analysis between the results of the two groups before and after cold stress. Recovery time of blood flow velocity by ultrasound Doppler was significantly different between the Yin and Yang tendency groups after cold stress. Conclusion: These results suggest that people with Yin or Yang tendency may show different responses in the autonomic nervous system. Further modified studies may include the responses to various manipulation techniques in acupuncture treatment and the individual responses according to pattern identification in traditional Korean medicine.

In order to find out the relationship between the Eight Principle Pattern Identification of Yin-Yang, Exterior-Interior and the Sasang constitution, we analyzed the clinical data from 500 women with menstrual pain and women without menstrual pain. In the previous study, the subject's information of Typology Complexion Pulse and Symptom was collected, and Eight Principle Pattern Identification was executed based on this. Later, The relationship between the Sasang constitution and the Eight Principle Pattern Identification was statistically analyzed. The obvious difference between the experimental group and the control group in the patterns of Yin-Yang and Exterior-Interior is that patients who complain of menstrual pain do not maintain harmony with the yin-yang ratio, it can be said that the patterns of Yin-Yang and Exterior-Interior can be a identification standard that significantly obscures the condition of the disease. There was a significant difference between the Sasang constitution and the Eight Principle Pattern Identification of Yin-Yang. There was no significant difference between the Sasang constitution and the Eight Principle Pattern Identification of Exterior-Interior. It is assumed that the relationship between the Eight Principle Pattern Identification and the Sasang constitution has changed depending on the difference a view of emotional Qi and pathogenic Qi.

Objectives Because of growing interest in personalized medicine, constitutional medicine also becomes more important. Constitutional medicine has already developed in many countries. In this study, we tried to investigate five type personality (Wutairen), a kind of Chinese constitutional medicine. Methods We did a research on five type personality using CNKI (http://www.cnki.net) up to Jan 15, 2018. Total 204 papers were searched with the keyword "Wutairen". We excluded 170 papers away from the subject or clinically studied. As a result, 34 papers were selected and analyzed. Results and Conclusions Five type personality (Wutairen) originated from Huangdi Neijing-Lingshu. There are 5 types: greater Yin person (Taiyin), lesser Yin person (Shaoyin), greater Yang person (Taiyang), lesser Yang person (Shaoyang) and Yin-yang balanced person. These are classified according to Yin-Yang content. Each type has different characteristic, treatment and prevention. Five type personality theory considers internal factors more important than external factors. Also, it considers the balance of Yin-Yang important.

The basic principles in the "Spleen-stomach theory(脾胃論)" sets up the phases and roles of spleen-stomach (脾胃) by establishing Earth(地 坤 土) and exposing the reality of spleen-stomach(脾胃) of human body which has its own shape and form with Heaven's reality exhibited. The meaning of Earth is based on the constant meaning of Earth in 'Earth Original-Earth as extended and stable ground(坤元一正之土)' giving form and shape, and Earth's movement with circulation, then exposes itself as 'Earth as plowing land(耕種之土)' concerning both the application of Five Phases and the physical characteristics of Earth. The Yin-Yang recognition on Earth is revealed as Yin Earth(陰土)-Yang Earth(陽土). Spleen(脾) was established as Yin Earth(陰土) and Stomach(胃) as Yang Earth(陽土). The seasonal assignment of Earth is Indian Summer(長夏), which is divided from Summer, and becomes Heat(熱), and the Yin-Yang recognition of Earth comes to be the meaning of the center and border. According to the Five Phasic recognition, it becomes Earth(土) and gets to be Dampness(濕) in accordance with Six Qi(六氣). 'Extreme Yin(至陰)' indicates Qi's status exposing the fundamental meaning regarding the role of creating, changing, and propelling Spleen-Stomach(脾胃) as a characteristic Yin Earth. Earth comprehends 'Four Courses(四維)' meaning, recognizes them as four parts of the 12 Earth's Branches(辰戌丑未) and the terminals of four seasons(四季之末), and has the meaning of the president of the change in four seasons. The theory of principle in the "Spleen-stomach theory(脾胃論)" stands on the basis of the 'Form Qi theory(形氣論)' and that of 'Upbearing, Downbearing, Floating, and Sinking theory(升降浮沈論)'. It manifests the theory of movement in the interaction between Form(形) and Qi(氣), and 'Qi Interior Form Exterior(氣裏形表)' indicates that Qi(氣) moves interiorly and Form(形) exteriorly.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to establish a Korean medical perspective on the human body through understanding of the meridians according to the distribution of the three yin and three yang (삼음삼양) and the opening, closing and pivot (관합추) as defined in ≪Huangdi's Internal Classic≫. Methods : A total of 8 medical databases including KISS, Earticle, DBpia, RISS, OASIS, KMbase, and ScienceON were used to search studies published through July 2021, and literature was included without limitations on the publication period. The search terms were "(meridian OR acupoint OR meridian sinew) AND position" OR "Gwan-Hap-Chu" OR "Gae-Hap-Chu" OR "three yin and three yang". Two researchers independently made choices among the searched literature based on the preplanned selection/exclusion criteria. The search terms were"(meridian OR acupoint OR meridian sinew) AND position" OR "Gwan-Hap-Chu" OR "Gae-Hap-Chu" OR "three yin and three yang". Results : Of the 36 obtained from the survey, 19 (53%) followed the definitions of "internal diameter" for "three yin and three yang" and "the opening, closing and pivot," but 6 (about 16%) took a neutral position and 10 (22%) avoided mentioning. Therefore, it was judged that research was needed to end the debate on the distribution of 'three yin and three yang' and 'the opening, closing and pivot'. In order to apply the definition of ≪Huangdi's Internal Classic≫ on 'distribution of the three-yin and three-yang' and 'the opening, closing and pivot' to the upper limb and lower limb as well as the torso of the human body, this author proposed a human body model with both upper limb and lower limb attached, inspired by the posture of the fetus in the developmental stage. Conclusions : In this study, using a new human body model, it was revealed that the distribution of the three yin and three yang and the opening, closing and pivot' as defined in the ≪Huangdi's Internal Classic≫ can be applied not only to the torso of the human body, but also to the upper limb and lower limb. Based on the understanding of meridians, the selection of meridians in the clinical acupuncture should be made accurately, and continuous interest and research on this are expected.

The fire not to back to its origin(火不歸原) is said that source yang(元陽) of sea of qi(氣海) rises because fire(火) of lower energizer(下焦) can't return to its origin. Successive medical men regarded the cause of it as yang deficiency(陽虛) or yin deficiency(陰虛) generally, but Jangseoksun(張錫純) presented eight kinds of cause, they are syndrome of upcast yang(戴陽證), deficiency of qi(氣虛), yin deficiency, yin and yang deficiency(陰陽虛), thoroughfare qi ascending counterflow(衝氣上衝), heart fire(心火), yang deficiency with cold fluid retention(寒飮) in middle energizer(中焦寒飮), yang deficiency with sunken cold locked in(沈寒錮冷). The method of conducting fire back to its origin may be the treatment of fire not to back to its origin as an interpretation of the phrase in a broad sense, but it is limited to yang deficiency with sunken cold locked in besides syndrome of upcast yang as the treatment based on pathological conditions. By this standpoint Eunsuryong(殷壽龍) used conducting fire back to its origin to remove hidden cold(伏寒) and make rising false fire(假火) settle. The meaning of conducting fire back to its origin is not just raise yang qi(陽氣) but break sunken cold locked in by using the drugs like Buja(附子), Yukgye(肉桂). Jakyak(芍藥) can concentrate yang qi on the life gate(命門) by converging it, Sukjihwang(熟地黃) can supply yin essence(陰精) and check the intense nature of tonifing yang(補陽) drugs. So if we want to use the method of conducting fire back to its origin, we should confirm the symptoms of sunken cold locked in and yang deficiency not to misdiagnose yin deficiency.

Objective : To develop an integrated curriculum for acupuncture treatment and pain sensitivity practice, and discuss its usefulness. Method : We established an integrated practice program incorporating acupuncture and pain on physiology perspectives, and measured pain sensitivity at Yin (PC6${\sim}$PC4) and Yang (TE5${\sim}$TE9) meridians before and after the acupuncture treatment. Results : The Yang (39.4${\pm}$23.5) and Yin (46.0${\pm}$25.5) meridians have significantly different degrees of pain sensitivity (n=118, p=0.018). Pain sensitivity was significantly decreased after acupuncture treatment at Yang (54.63${\pm}$28.02/ 40.81${\pm}$29.39) and Yin (56.13${\pm}$27.88/ 38.72${\pm}$25.17) meridians (n=16, p<0.001). Discussion and Conclusion : The difference between the Yin and Yang meridians can be materialized in this integrated practice curriculum model. The effectiveness of this integrated class and suggestions for improvement of integrated curricula were discussed.

There have been many studies to find out association between the face characteristics and some diseases or the personality and the health state, but there have been few association studies between the face characteristics and the yin/yang personality. We would like to suggest that the yin/yang personality is associated with the face characteristics. We collected 1,471 subjects from the February, 2008 to July, 2010. We divided into three groups of subjects by a yin/yang personality score and analyzed the face characteristics after adjusting for age. The Analysis of Covariance and Scheffe test was conducted to certify the difference among three groups. P-value for significance was under 0.05. The significant face characteristics were SH36 in men, and FD50_51, SH36, FArea04, FAreaRatio4, FR01, FR05 in women. There is some association between the face characteristics and the yin/yang personality.
