  • In this study, unlike high flowing concrete, using glass bubble to develop self-compacting concrete(hereinafter referred to as "SCC") with excellent filler performance by evaluating both flowability and yield stress, viscosity An experiment was conducted. Experimental results show that when 1 kg of glass bubbles are used, it is effective in stabilizing the physical properties of concrete, reducing the yield stress and viscosity.

  • PURPOSES : In this paper, the analytical solutions suggested to simulate the behavior of rheological fluids were rigorously re-derived and investigated for fixed conditions to evaluate the applicability for the solutions on a mini-cone slump test of cement paste. The selected solutions with proper boundary conditions can be used as reference solutions to evaluate the performance of numerical simulation approaches, such as the discrete element method. METHODS : The slump, height, and spread radius for the given boundary and yield stress conditions that are determined by five different analytical solutions are compared. RESULTS : The analytical solution based on fluid mechanics for pure shear flow shows similar results to that for intermediate flow at low yield stresses. The fluid mechanics-based analytical solution resulted in a very similar trend to the geometry-based analytical solution. However, it showed a higher slump at high yield stress and lower slump at low yield stress ranges than the geometry-based analytical model. The analytical solution based on the mini-cone geometry was not significantly affected by the yield criteria, such as von Mises and Tresca. CONCLUSIONS : Even though differences among the analytical solutions in terms of slump and spread radius existed, the difference can be considered insignificant when the solutions were used as reference to evaluate the appropriateness of numerical approaches, such as the discrete element method.

  • Development and numerical implementation for an elastoplastic constitutive model for anisotropic and asymmetric materials are presented in this paper. The Coulomb-Mohr yield criterion was modified to consider both the anisotropic and asymmetric properties. The modified yield criterion is an isotropic function of the principal values of a symmetric matrix which is linearly transformed from the Cauchy stress space. In addition to the constitutive equation, the numerical treatment for the singularity in the vertex region of yield surface and stress integration algorithm based on elastoplasticity were presented. In order to assess the accuracy of numerical algorithm, isoerror maps were considered. Also, extension of a strip with a circular hole was simulated and results compared with those obtained using the (smooth) Mises yield criterion to validate stress output for a complex stress state.

  • Flow properties of doenjang samples at various total solid contents (30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40%) were evaluated in this study. Flow properties of doenjang samples was determined by using Haake concentric cylinderical viscometer and Instron testing machine with capillary extrusion viscometer, and consistency index(K), and flow behavior index(n) was also determined from power models, and yield stress was derived form Casson models and vanes methods. Doenjang samples showed shear-thinning (pseudoplastic) fluid with small magnitude of flow behavior index(n) (n=0.30-0.55). Casson yield stress was from 2.11 to 64.02(Pa). Vane yield stress was more effective than casson yield stress in property of reactivation. Apparent viscosity was decreased with the increase in temperature and activation energy was in the range of 6.58 to 10.70 kJ/mole. From the capillary extrusion method, K and n was increased with the increase in solid content with good correlation with. The result revealed that capillary extrusion method is useful for measuring the flow properties of doenjang.

  • This paper introduces a method of predicting the behavior of compacted soil with an unsaturated soil mechanics by considering the effect of suction as an increasing consolidation yield stress. Two kinds of experiments were conducted. One is a series of static compaction tests to monitor the suction, and the other is a series of compression tests on compacted soil without soaking. The results of our tests indicate that it is possible to derive the distribution of suction on compaction curves and to hypothesize the changes in void ratio in the compression tests that depends on the suction. In addition, a new method is proposed to estimate the consolidation yield stress of compacted soil with a simple chart including compaction curves.

  • This study investigates the effect of temperature and electric field strength on the Bingham characteristics of Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids which change their Yield shear stress and viscosity by temperature and electric field strength. It is found that under constant temperature the Yield sheal stress and viscosity of ER fluids proportionally increase with the applied electric field strength, and under constant applied electric field strength the Yield shear stress and viscosity of ER fluids decrease with the increasing temperature. These results are considered to be applied to the fluid and pneumatic power industry.

  • This paper presents parametric study of long-rod penetration. Influences of yield stress of penetrator and target material on the penetration results such as crater size and penetrator residual length are contemplated. Numerical experiments are carried out with varying the value of static yield stress of materials. Lagrangian explicit code NET2D was used to perform parametric study. Element eroding algorithm was used to properly simulate long-rod penetration. Analytic and empirical model of long-rod penetration and Taylor test are used to explain the relationships of parameter and simulation results.

  • We reported on the eletrorheological (ER) properties of several semiconducting polymers including poly (p-phenylene) (PPP), poly (acene quinone) radicals (PAQRs), microencapsulated polyaniline (MPANI) and polyaniline (PANI) those we synthesized. The yield stress dependence on electric field strength for the ER fluids using these semiconducting polymers was mainly examined. The yield stress, which is an important design parameter for ER fluids, was observed to satisfy a universal scaling function, allowing that yield stress data for all the ER fluids examined in this study collapse onto a single curve for a broad range of electric field strengths. The proposed scaling function incorporates both the polarization and conductivity models.

  • In carrying out the elastic-plastic analysis, four conditions (equilibrium equation, constitutive equation, condition of compatibility and yield condition) should be satisfied. In welding, the temperature largely changed from a melting temperature to a room temperature. So, yield stress of materials largely changed, too. In particular, yield stress becomes about zero over $700^{\circ}C$. The analysis should be carried out under the condition that equivalent stress generated in temperature increment ${\Delta}T$ did not exceed yield stress of materials at high temperature over $700^{\circ}C$. It should be sufficiently recognized that the obtained results were not reliable if this condition was not satisfied.

  • Set-up reference values, used in determining the optimum downcoiling tension, we experimentally verified in this study. During the actual downcoiling, the strip suffers both tension and bending force through the rotation of mandrel. Therefore, simulative test which can measure both tension and bending resistance of strip was performed to estimate set-up reference value for strip tension during downcoiling operations. The values obtained from the simulative test were correlated with the yield stress which has conventionally been used as reference values for downcoiling tension. The correlative analysis showed that the yield stress of strip can be a good reference value for downcoiling tension. Furthermore, the bending load also shows strong correlation with simulated values due to the close relationship between yield stress and bending load.
