This study analyzes altitude changes of riverbed at 6 bridges in the upper and lower reaches of Yeongju Dam in Naeseong River, from 2009 to 2016 just before and after the dam construction. For 5 years from November 2010 to December 2015 when the dam was under construction, approximately 0.091m of the riverbed altitude in average more than twice before the dam construction was lowered, because of the effects of riverbed excavation for riverside maintenance in the upper reaches and transport limitation of flow and sediment by the dam in the lower reaches. Between November 2009 and December 2016 when the dam was in pre-construction and post-construction stages, respectively, the most sites in this study in the upper and lower reaches showed lowering in the riverbed altitudes. On the other hand, the riverbed around Hoeryongpo closed to the river mouth seems to be influenced by channel changes in Nakdong River rather than by the dam construction.
The Naeseong Stream as a tributary of Nakdong River has conserved the unique structure and function of a typical sand-bed stream ecosystem. However, it is expected to change the stream bed environments and then the fish fauna in the downstream of the dam after the operation of the Yeongju Dam from 2016. We collected fishes and investigated their habitat environments from 2014 to 2016 in the downstream of the Yeongju Dam under construction in order to monitor changes in habitat environment, fauna and community structure of fishes in the Naeseong Stream. The size of the bed materials increased immediately downstream of the Yeongju Dam under construction. Before the operation of the Yeongju Dam, Zacco platypus was dominated and Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Hemibarbus longirostris and Pseudogobio esocinus were sub-dominated according to the different sampling sites. Hemibarbus labeo, H. longirostris, Pseudogobio esocinus, Gobiobotia nakdongensis, Cobitis hankugensis and Leiocassis ussuriensis were found as a psammophilous fish specific to sand stream in the Naeseong Stream. At the downstream of the dam, the fish community was classified into a group of gravel-bed fishes such as Microphysogobio yaluensis, Coreoleuciscus splendidus and Coreoperca herzi and a group of sand-bed fishes such as Hemibarbus labeo, Cobitis hankugensis and Gobiobotia nakdongensis. These fish communities gradually tended to change from sand-bed fish community to gravel-bed fish community during the construction of the Yeongju Dam. Therefore, it is necessary to collect the baseline data for the stream ecosystem conservation in the sandy stream by continuously monitoring changes in the environment and fish in the downstream of the Youngju Dam.
Heavy metal contaminations were investigated in fishes inhabiting the basins of Andong, Imha and Yeongju dam basins along the upper stream of the Nakdong river. The characteristics of heavy metals contamination in fish were investigated based on sampling sites located in the Andong dam basin. The muscle tissue was analyzed for 267 objects of 26 species from the Andong dam, 50 objects of 17 species from Imha dam, 38 objects of 9 species fromYoungju dam basin. The type and amount of heavy metals concentrated in the body of the fishes was found to be species-dependent. The heavy metal species which contamination increase through the Seokpo smelter are chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead, and these are very likely the influence of the smelter. The concentration of eight heavy metals in fish from the Andong dam basin was higher than that in fish from the Imha and Youngju dam basins; the values for zinc, arsenic, and cadmium were significantly higher. However, mercury and lead exhibited high values in the Imha and Yeongju dam basins, respectively.
Due to climate change, algal blooms frequently occur not only in Korea but also around the world, and the risk of toxicity of harmful algae has recently been issued. It is known that the representative harmful algae, cyanobacteria, are caused by the intersection of three factors: water temperature, residence time, and nutrients. In this study, water quality simulation was carried out using EFDC, a three-dimensional numerical model, to analyze the variations in water quality due to the decrease of residence time according to the opening of Yeongju Dam in Naeseong-Cheon. In fact, the concentration of chlorophyll-a in Yeongju Dam in the summer of 2021 was significant, exceeding the 'algae warning' for a long time based on the previous algae warning system. On the other hand, as a result of performing the simulation under the condition that the dam gate was completely opened, the concentration of chlorophyll-a was mostly reduced below the 'algae warning' level during the simulation period. It was confirmed that reducing the residence time by restoring the flow of Naeseong-Cheon is a way to immediately reduce algae in Yeongju Dam.
The relationship between dam construction and water quality has recently come to be considered an important issue. A dam is a physical factor which causes changes to the river system around it. Considering these points, this study was conducted to obtain basic data by analyzing the relationship between water level fluctuations and water quality parameters in the short-term. In terms of methodology, the new construction of the Yeongju Dam (M5) in 2016 was divided into Stage 1 as the lotic system and Stage 2 as the lentic system, with four years in each period, and the water level fluctuations and water quality were analyzed using official data. As a result of this study, M5, a stagnant area in which organic matter and nutrients accumulate, was found to be an important factor in water quality management. In addition, the water level changed rapidly (0.9±0.2 m → 10.9±7.1 m) as the river environment condition was converted from the lotic system to the lentic system. In addition, water quality parameters such as BOD, COD, TOC, and Chl-a significantly changed in the short-term. Further, since the transport of organic matter and nutrients occurred well in the lotic system, sedimentation was expected to be dominant in the lentic system. Therefore, it was determined that when the river flow is blocked, autochthonous organic matter is an important factor for long-term water quality management in the future. This process can increase the trophic state of the water body. As a result of this study, the TSIKO value was converted from mesotrophic in Stage 1 to eutrophic in Stage 2. Eventually, short-term changes in the river environment will affect not only changes in water level but also changes in water quality. Thus, a comprehensive and strategic approach is needed for long-term water quality management in the future.
This study investigates the geomorphic changes and Bed Relief Index of the river downstream of the Yeongju Dam by Nays2DH, a two-dimensional numerical model, in order to grasp the dynamics of the downstream river while applying various flow patterns such as pulse discharge. It shows that the geomorphic and the bed elevations changes are the largest under the condition of the normalized pulse discharge. The total change in the riverbed is 29.88 m for uniform flow, 27.46 m for normalized hydrograph, 29.63 m for pulse flow and 31.87 m for pulse flow with normalized hydrograph which result in the largest variation in scour and deposition. The Bed Relief Index (BRI) increases with time under conditions of uniform flow, pulse flow and pulse flow with normalized hydrograph. However, BRI increased rapidly until 30 hrs after the peak flow (14 hrs), but decreased from 56 hrs under the condition of normalized hydrograph. Therefore, the condition of normalized hydrograph gives greater dynamics than the condition of a single flood or constant flow, and the dynamics increase downstream than upstream, resulting in an effect on improving the environment of the river downstream of the dam.
Channel-forming discharge for downstream section of Yeongju dam in Naesung stream was calculated to analyze stable channel geometry. Determined channel-forming discharge was applied to design stable channel slope, depth, and base width at Yonghyeol station. Used data for channel-forming discharge and stable channel analysis were collected in downstream section of Yeongju dam in Naesung stream before the dam construction. Specified recurrence interval discharge, effective discharge, and bankfull discharge were analyzed and compared to decide final channel-forming discharge which was $260m^3/s$ of bankfull discharge. Stable channel analysis and design program was applied to predict stable channel section of width, depth, and slope with various sediment transport equations of Ackers and White, Brownlie, Engelund and Hansen, and Yang's equations. As a result, all equations of sediment transport produced milder slopes compared to current bed slope of 0.00177 and Ackers and White equation presented the most similar flow depth of current section with the design constraint of current channel width.
In this study, change in vegetation on bars was analyzed using the data on hydrology and river morphology with on-site photographic monitoring data for the sites of interest of the Naeseong Stream during the period from March 2013 to July 2016 when the impoundment of Yeongju Dam began. The effect of flow condition on burial and removal of vegetation covered on bar surfaces was elucidated by comparison of on-site photographic monitoring data with continuous water level plotted with on the cross-section profile. In 2014 burial happened due to late flood, while July flood caused burial and removal in 2016. On the contrary vegetation increased in 2015 due to low flow without flood. Results of this study showing natural changes in vegetation will be reference to changes which is expected to be caused by dam impoundment.
A feasibility modeling for potential hydroelectric dam site selection was suggested using 1 sec ASTGTM (ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model) and Terra/Aqua MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) derived land use (MCD12Q1) data. The modeling includes DEM pre-processing of peak, sink, and flat, river network generation, watershed delineation and segmentation, terrain analysis of stream cross section and reservoir storage, and estimation of submerged area for compensation. The modeling algorithms were developed using Python and as an open source GIS. When a user-defined stream point is selected, the model evaluates potential hydroelectric head, reservoir surface area and storage capacity curve, watershed time of concentration from DEM, and compensation area from land use data. The model was tested for 4 locations of already constructed Buhang, BohyunMountain, Sungdeok, and Yeongju dams. The modeling results obtained maximum possible heads of 37.0, 67.0, 73.0, 42.0 m, surface areas of 1.81, 2.4, 2.8, 8.8 ㎢, storages of 35.9, 68.0, 91.3, 168.3×106 ㎥ respectively. BohyunMountain and Sungdeok show validity but in case of Buhang and Yeongju dams have maximum head errors. These errors came from the stream generation error due to ASTGTM. So, wrong dam watershed boundary limit the head. This study showed a possibility to estimate potential hydroelectric dam sites before field investigation especially for overseas project.

Organic pollutants that contained in stream sediments have origins of mountain soil in natural and cattle manure in human activity. Nitrogen and carbon isotope analysis for mountain soil, cattle manure and stream sediment were performed for contribution evaluation of organic pollutants in Toil stream of Yeongju dam basin. Average carbon isotope ratio(δ13C) is -25.17‰, -22.34‰, and -26.39‰ for river sediments, cattle manure and mountain soil, respectively. Result of carbon isotope analysis suggests that river sediments are more affected by acid soils. Average value of the nitrogen isotope ratio (δ15N) is 9.46% for river sediment, 1.99% for mountain soil, and 19.53% for cattle manure. Result of nitrogen isotopic analysis show that contribution of cattle mature is slightly higher than that of mountain soil in Toil stream sediments.
