  • In this study, the colorants of Amur cork tree were extracted with boiling water. Chitosan crosslinked cotton fabrics have been dyed with aqueous extract of Amur cork tree and their dyeabilities on the fabrics were studied. Additionally the fastness to washing and light were also investigated. Cotton fabrics were treated with a crosslinking agent epichlorohydrin in the presence of chitosan to provide the cotton fabrics the dyeing properties of natural dye(Amur cork tree) by the chemical linking of chitosan to the cellulose structure. This process was applied by means of the conventional mercerizing process. The chitosan finishing and durable press finishing of the cotton fabrics occurred simultaneously in the mercerization bath. On the surface color change, the fabric of no-chitosan finished and no-mordanted has greenish yellow. The more crosslinked chitosan on cotton fabrics has the more turned down greenish on the surface color, as increasing the concentration of chitosan, greenish color turn down to the yellow close the 90o hue angle. In all sorts of fabrics, dyeability(K/S) is slightly affected by the number of manufacturing process and the concentration of chitosan. But only mercerized cotton fabric has higher dyeability (K/S) than mordant treated cotton fabrics. Wash fastness has little different results by each condition, but almost similar values. Light fastness was improved with chitosan treatment on cotton fabric.

  • This paper surveys the mordanting and dyeing properties of Rubia akane Nakai appropriate extraction, dyeing and mordanting conditions of Rubia akane Nakai were determined, and the effect of mordanting method on dye uptake and color fastness of the dyed fabric was investigated. The optimum temperature to extract Rubia akane Nakai was during 1 hour in 8$0^{\circ}C$. The effective dyeing temperature and time of silk were 8$0^{\circ}C$, 1hour. The silk fabrics dyed with purpurin appeared red color, with alizarine appeared yellow-brown and with Rubia akane Nakai appeared yellow orange. K/S value of the dyeing fabrics was increased by pre-mordanting treatment. Mordant as Sn and Fe was better than anything else in K/S value. Mordanting treatment method affected color change of the dyed silk. In the case of Rubia akane Ntkai light fastness was increased by Fe and Al mordant treatment, Perspiration fastness of Rubia akane Nakai appeared more than 3 grades geneally. Fastness of abrasion and dry-cleaning appeared mon than 4~5 grades and these fastness improvement were generally effective for post-mordanting treatment.

  • A new grafted cactus cultivar, called 'Hwangseon', Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, is a hybrid crossed between two orange color cultivars 'Geoseong' and 'Huhwang'. Mating was performed in the greenhouse of National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2005. The harvested seeds were sown at 100 mL volumetric flasks filled with 'Kyoto' medium. Seedling had been grafted into a young rootstock, Hylocereus trigonus, and cultured in vitro in 100 mL test tube for more than six months. After re-grafting and planting in the green house in 2006, their characteristics were evaluated three times until 2009. The new cultivar has a flat round shape and bright yellow skin color. In addition, it has 7 to 9 ribs with gray and straight spines on the body and produces an average of 12.3 offsets.

  • The objective of this study was to find in what color Korean handmade paper(Hanji) is dyed when it is dyed with a pigment extracted from mugworts using different kinds of mordant, and how the paper is discolored and variety of strength under the condition of accelerated aging test. The results of this experiment are as follows. Among mugwort mordants, only ferrous sulfate mordant produced unique khaki color with a slightly lower degree of discoloration, so it is considered to be applicable in dyeing Korean paper. Bright yellow and light green colors were obtained using mugwort but their chroma was too low for actual use. With regard to water used, colors obtained using underground water had high chroma, but when distilled water was used paper was colored in useless light green. Mordant was found to lower the strength of Korean handmade paper, and the lowering of strength was even more serious under the condition of forced deterioration.

  • This study investigated the effect of yellow, black, and brown mustard seeds on color, lipid oxidation (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances [TBARS]), and microbiological and sensory qualities of meatballs during storage. Heat treatment of mustard seeds affected the TBARS value of meatball samples (p<0.0001). The addition of mustard seeds decreased TBARS value of meatball samples (p<0.0001). Heat treatment of mustard seeds decreased the $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of meatball samples (p<0.0001). The meatball samples with mustard seeds increased $b^*$ value of meatball samples however it decreased $a^*$ value of meatball samples (p<0.0001). The addition of mustard seeds decreased aerobic mesophilic bacteria count (p<0.0001), Enterobacteriaceae count (p<0.0001), psychrophilic bacteria count (p<0.0001) and yeast and mold count of meatball samples (p<0.0001). On a given storage day, the yellow mustard added meatballs sample was given higher color, appearance, flavor, acceptability ratings than those added black and brown mustard. Regarding sensory and microbiological properties, mustard seed contributed to microbiological quality and sensorial properties of meatball samples.

  • Influence of the fluorescent whitening agent(FWA)'s adsorption on the whiteness of cotton and on the color change of the dyed fabrics was investigated by repeating wash cycles. Cotton 100% and cotton60/polyester40 blended fabrics were dyed pink, blue and yellow, and cyanuric chloride diamino stilbene(CC/DAS) and distyryl bisphenyl(DSBP) were used for the FWA with laundry detergents. Fabrics were washed at $20^\circ{C}$ with Terg-o-tometer. The FWA adsorption amount was measured by the absorption intensity for the pyridine-water extracted solution. The FWA adsorption increased on the cotton fabric with the wash cycles. Though adsorption of CC/DAS continuously increased up to the 20th cycle, that of DSBP increased sharply before the 10th cycle and reached an equilibrium. The whiteness of the fabrics dried in the shade was greater than that dried under the sunlight through window glass. The color change of dyed fabrics was increased by the number of wash cycles. Pink changed more greatly than blue, yellow or grey cloth. The color change(\Delta{E)}$ of dyed fabric washed repeatedly up to the 20th cycle with the detergent without FWA was less than 1. It is recommended to wash pale colored fabric with the detergent free of FWA.

  • This study investigates the fundamental properties of the color concrete corresponding to the various types and contents of the coloring agent. For the properties of the fresh, the flow is gradually decreased corresponding to increasing of the coloring agent, and it is approached to the target flow on $3{\sim}6%$ of the adding amounts. The air content is increased in accordance with the increase of the coloring agent. For the properties of the hardened concrete, the compressive strength is increased about 9 and 12% in the case that $3{\sim}6%$ of red and yellow coloring agents is mixed. And they are decreased when white and black coloring agents. The chromaticity of red $(a^*)$ and yellow $(b^*)$ is appropriate at 6% of the adding amounts, and luminosity of the white and black is also favorable because of economy at 6%, so the formative article is manufactured successfully to aim in the result of this study.

  • A chromo/fluorogenic $NO_2S_2$-macrocycle L functionalized with nitrobenzofurazan unit as a dual-signaling probe was synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis. In a cation-induced color change experiment, L exhibited excellent $Hg^{2+}$ ion selectivity by showing the color change from orange-red to yellow. However, this hypochromic shift by $Hg^{2+}$ was observed for the weaker coordinating anion system such as ${NO_3}^-$ and ${ClO_4}^-$ ions. The observed anion effect is due to the strong coordination of anions inhibits the bond formation between $Hg^{2+}$ and the macrocyclic tert-N atom, which is sensitive to induce the color change. In the fluorometric experiment, L showed chelate-enhanced fluorescence change effect only with $Hg^{2+}$ ion, together with a change from yellow to green emission. The sensing ability for $Hg^{2+}$ with the proposed chemosensor L is due to the stable complexation with 1:1 stoichiometry (metal-to-ligand).
