Objectives : This study is designed in order to evaluate oriental medical treatment of facial diplegia with continued facial palsy. Methods : The authors observed patients by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system for operated acupuncture treatment, herbal medicine treatment and physiotherapy. Results & Conclusions : 1. Both facial grade had different scores in Yanagihara's unweighted grading system for 2 cases when the facial palsy occured. 2. Both cases were diagnosed in wind-cold(feng-han) type. 3. The left and right side of face took different amount of time to recover. 4. Facial diplegia was significantly improved.

Objectives : This study was to compare the effect of acupuncture on peripheral facial nerve paralysis between affected part, and unaffected part in the incipient stage. Methods : We investigated 32 cases of patient with peripheral facial nerve paralysis, and divided into two groups. One group was treated by acupuncture on the affected part, and the other was treated by acupuncture on the unaffected part. Both groups were evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and House-Backmann grade before treatment, and in every one week and after treatment. Results & Conclusion : 1. The number of female was more than that of male and the number of left side was more than that of right side in distribution of lesion. Post ear pain was the highest related symptom at onset, Unknown was a major cause of peripheral facial nerve paralysis in distribution of cause. 2. Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and House-Backmann grade score between two groups were not statistically significant in every one week. 3. Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and House-Backmann grade score between two groups were not statistically significant in before treatment and final.

Objective : We suggested the clinical effect of Rainbow therapy on Bell's palsy. Methods : 20 Bell's palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was treated by acupunture and the other group(B group) was treated by acupunture and Rainbow therapy. The effect of these treatments was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and House-Brackmann grading system. Results and Conclusions : In Yanagihara's unweighted grading system After 1 week and 2weeks treatment, group B marked more higher than group A in treatment outcome. We discovered that it is significant differences between two groups. After 3 weeks treatment, group B marked more higher than group A in treatment outcome but it is not significant differences between two groups. In House-Brackmann's facial nerve grading system, After 1 week treatment, group B marked more higher than group A in treatment outcome. We discovered that it is significant differences between two groups. After 2 weeks and 3 weeks treatment, group A marked more higher than group A in treatment outcome but it is not significant differences between two groups.

Objectives : This study was performed to observe the effect of complex therapy, including electro-acupuncture and magnetic-acupuncture, on peripheral facial nerve palsy. Methods : Nine patients with peripheral facial nerve palsy were treated with acupuncture using electrical and magnetic stimulation. Acupoints in the face were stimulated with an electromagnetic field, as widely and as evenly as possible. To evaluate the effects before and after treatment we used Yanagihara's unweighted grading system, House-Brackmann scale, and Sunnybrook facial grading system and image once a week. Results : After treatment, the scores of Yanagihara's unweighted grading system, House-Brackmann scale and Sunnybrook facial grading system each improved (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion : Complex therapy using electro-acupuncture and magnetic-acupuncture might be an effective treatment to improve symptoms of peripheral facial nerve palsy. Further randomized-controlled trials are required to verify the efficacy and results of this study.

Objectives : The aim of this study is comparing the improvement of Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt syndrome according to treatment duration. Methods : The 11cases diagnosed as Ramsay hunt syndrome and 30cases of Bell's palsy who visited Cheong-ju Oriental Medical hospital from February 2006 to June 2008 were evaluated. We used Yanagihara's unweighted Grading System to confirm the improvement. Results : In the analysis of cause, except the "none", the most common cause was "Overwork" in both two group. After 5-day treatment the score was getting worse but after 10-day treatment score was improved in both group. The improvement of Bell's palsy group was better than that of Ramsay hunt syndrome group after 5-day and 10-day treatment, but there was no significance. Conclusions : In comparison of Yanagihara's unweighted grading score checked before treatment, after 5-day, 10-day and 15-day treatment between Bell's palsy and Ramsay hunt sundrome, there was no statistical significant difference.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out validity of Surface Electromyography(sEMG) compared with Nerve Conduction Study and clinical assessment scale as assessment factors for facial palsy. Methods: We investigated 50 cases of patients with peripheral facial palsy who had records of sEMG and NCS to check. Then we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and NCS that carried out around 1 week after onset. And we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and clinical assessment scales that were measured three times around 1 week, 3-4 weeks and 5-6 weeks after onset. Clinical assessment scales used in this study were House-brackmann grade, Yanagihara unweighted grading scale and Sunnybrook facial grading system. We used Pearson's correlation for statistical analysis. Results: sEMG and NCS, measured at similar times, were statistically correlated. Especially, the correlation with the forehead region was high. And sEMG and clinical assessment scale, measured at same time, were statistically correlated, especially after 5 weeks from onset. Conclusion: According to this study, sEMG is expected to be useful to assessment facial palsy.

This case report determines the effects of Korean medicine treatment on a pontine hemorrhage with a cavernous malformation. In this study, Korean medicine treatments, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and moxibustion, were administered for 30 days. During the hospitalization period, evaluations were performed using the Scott and Kraft Scale, eye movement, 9-gaze photography, the House-Brackmann grading system, and Yanagihara's unweighted grading system on days 1, 12, and 30. The Scott and Kraft Scale increased from -4 to -2, while eye movement increased from 43.1% to 72.3%. The House-Brackmann grading system improved from 4 to 2, and Yanagihara's unweighted grading system increased from 13 to 31. We also discovered that the movement of the left eye was improved by 9-gaze photography. Our findings suggest that Korean medicine treatment has potential effects on esotropia and facial palsy caused by a pontine hemorrhage with a cavernous malformation.

Objectives : The aim of this report was to investigate the effects of Korean medical treatment on facial nerve paralysis with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus caused by traumatic temporal bone fracture. Methods : We treated a patient with acupuncture, herbal medicine and physiotherapy. The effect of these treatments was evaluated by House-Brackmann facial grading scale, Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and by Digital Infrared Thermographic Image. Results : After 21 days of Korean medical treatment, House-Brackmann facial grading scale changed from III to II and Yanagihara's unweighted grading score increased from 14 to 27. Digital Infrared Thermographic Image also improved. Conclusions : These results suggest that Korean medical treatments were effective in treating facial nerve paralysis with sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus caused by traumatic temporal bone fracture. We hope that a more efficient application of this treatment will be the result of clinical data accumulated in future studies.

Objectives : This study was to compare the incipient grade and improvement rate between each opposite gender and part on peripheral facial nerve paralysis. Methods : We investigated 64 cases of patient with peripheral facial nerve paralysis and divided into four groups with each gender and affected part and compared their incipient grade and rate of improvement. All groups were evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system before treatment and in everyday and after treatment. Results & Conclusion : 1. There's a difference of incipient grade between each opposite affected lesion in male. But there was not significant statistics. 2. There's no difference of incipient grade between each opposite affected lesion in female. 3. There's a difference of incipient grade between each opposite gender, affected their right side. But there was not significant statistics. Left side affecting palsy is more severe than right in male, and reversed results in female. But there were not significant statistics. There's no differences between each affected lesion in female. 4. There's no differences of improvement rate between each affected lesion in female. 5. The group, affected right side had better rate of improvement than another in male. But it's not significant statistics. 6. Male group had better rate of improvement than female in both gender, affected its left lesion. But it's not significant statistics.

Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the improvement of Bell's Palsy by Yanagihara's System. Methods : Early admission care, western medicine, acupuncture and electrical stimulation was applied to the 22 patients who dignosisd as Bell's palsy. The effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : After 25 day treatment the mean values of the Yanagihara's score($26.90{\pm}9.53$) showed stastically significant improvement in comparison with pre-treatment($8.68{\pm}5.13$). Conclusion : These results provided that the early admission care, western medicine, acupuncture and electrical stimulation is a valuable treatment for Bell's palsy. Further case control study is need to confirm the effect of above treatment on Bell's palsy.
