  • C-axis oriented $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) thin films were grown on $Al_2O_3$ (alumina and R-plane sapphire) substrates by a pulsed laser deposition method. The crystallinity of the $CeO_2$ buffer layer on sapphire substrate exhibit a strong dependence on the deposition temperature, resulting in the growth of a-axis orientation at $800^{\circ}C$. The superconducting properties of YBCO thin films on $Al_2O_3$ substrates showed strong dependence on both thickness and crystallinity of the $CeO_2$ buffer layer. Critical temperature of YBCO film on alumina substrate was ${\sim}83\;K$. In the case of R-plane sapphire substrate,

  • Superconducting electrical devices are under development in a national project in Korea. And KEPCO and LGIS are in charge of development of a resistive type fault current limiters(FCLs) with YBCO thin films. In order to realize FCLs, the rated power of FCLs must be increased. For this purpose, it is of great interest to increase of allowed voltage of unit component without electrical and thermal damages. So, meander lines were widely used for the conducting path to increase maximum electric field. In this research, numerical simulations on the electromagnetic behaviors of the device were carried out, especially focusing on the effect of meander line structures on the YBCO thin films. To evaluate the structures of meander lines, three types of meander lines were considered for numerical analysis using finite element method (FEM). In this simulation, both normal state and fault conditions were considered for calculation of electric field, current density, magnetic field density. And the simulation resulted are compared to find the optimum design of meander lines for resistive FCLs.

  • We fabricated a resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) of 3-phase $6.6 kV_{rms}$ / rating, based on YBCO thin films grown on sapphire substrates with a diameter off inch. Each element of the SFCL was designed to have the rated voltage of $600 V_{rms}$ $/35A_{rms}$. The elements produced a single phase with 8${\times}$6 components connected in series and parallel. In addition, a NiCr shunt resistor of 23 $\Omega$ was connected in parallel to each of them for simultaneous quenches between the elements. Prior to investigating the performance of the 3 phase SFCL, we examined the quench characteristics for 8 elements connected in series. For all elements, simultaneous quenches and equal voltage distribution within 10% deviation from the average were obtained. Based on these results, performance of the SFCL for single line-to-ground faults was investigated. The SFCL successfully limited the fault current of $10 kA_{ rms}$ below 816 $A_{peak}$ within 0.12 msec right after the fault occurred. During the quench process, average temperature of all components did not exceed 250 K, and the SFCL was totally safe during the whole operation.

  • Total Fluorine content in the precursor solution for MOD processing of YBCO coated conductors can be significantly reduced by synthesizing precursor solution with F-free Y & Cu precursor and Barium trifluoroacetate(TFA). It was shown that crack-free and uniform precursor films were formed after calcinations in humidified oxygen atmosphere. Less than 2 hours are required to finish the calcination process, and XRD measurement shows that $BaF_2,\;CuO,\;and\;Y_2O_3$ are major constituent of calcined precursor films. Film thickness after calcination was measured to be ${\sim}2.8$ um by applying slot-die coating method. In particular, addition of Samarium shows critical current of Ic=226 A/cm-w($Jc=3.4\;MA/cm^2$). Also discussed are recent developments in the reel-to-reel processing using F-free Y & Cu precursor solutions. It is shown that uniform and fast processing route to YBCO coated conductor with high Ic can be provided by employing F-free Y & Cu precursor solutions in MOD process.

  • Y123 films have been deposited on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single-crystal and IBAD substrates by spray pyrolysis method using nitrate precursors. Ultrasonic atomization was adopted to decrease the droplet size, spraying angle and its moving velocity toward substrate for introducing the preheating tube furnace in appropriate location. A small preheating tube furnace was installed between spraying nozzle and substrate for fast drying and enhanced decomposition of precursors. C-axis oriented films were obtained on both LAO and IBAD substrates at deposition temperature of around $710{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and working pressures of 10~15 torr. Thick c-axis epitaxial film with the thickness of $0.3{\sim}0.6\;{\mu}m$ was obtained on LAO single-crystal by 10 min deposition. But the XRD results of the film deposited on IBAD template at same deposition condition showed that the buffer layers of the IBAD metal substrate was affected by long residence of metal substrate at high temperature for YBCO deposition.

  • A new precursor solution wilt low fluorine content was synthesized for MOD processing of coated conductors. In this study, the precursor solution for MOD processing was synthesized using F-free yttrium and copper precursor. It was shown that crack-free and uniform precursor films were formed after calcination in humidified oxygen atmosphere. Less than 2 hours were required to finish the calcination process. The relatively gradual weight loss during the calcination process is attributed to the feasibility of fast calcination profile. The calcined precursor film was converted to a YBCO film without any secondary phases after annealing in wet $Ar/O_2$ atmosphere. Fully converted film shows uniform microstructure and high critical current density. $(Jc=2.7MA/cm^2) $.

  • High-.ate in-situ$ YBa_2$Cu$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) film growth was demonstrated by means of the electron beam co-evaporation. Even though our oxygen pressure is low, ∼$5 ${\times}$10^{-5}$ Torr, we can synthesize as-grown superconducting YBCO films at a deposition rate of around 10 nm/s. Relatively high temperatures of around 90$0^{\circ}C$ was necessary in this process so far, and it suggests that this temperature at a given oxygen activity allows a Ba-Cu-O liquid formation along with an YBCO epitaxy. Local critical current density shows a clear correlation with local resistivity. Homogeneous transport properties with a large critical current density ($4 ∼ 5 MA/\textrm{cm}^2$ at 77K, 0T) are observed in top faulted region while it is found that the bottom part carries little supercurrent with a large local resistivity. Therefore, it is possible that thickness dependence of critical current density is closely related with a topological variation of good superconducting paths and/or grains in the film bodies. The information derived from it may be useful in the characterization and optimization of superconducting films for electrical power and other applications.

  • We fabricated YBCO film using a TFA-MOD method. In order to enhance the reaction kinetics and to control the formation of the second phases, $Y_2Ba_1Cu_1O_x$ and $Ba_3Cu_5O_8$ powders were used as precursors (the so called "211 process"). The films were calcined at $460^{\circ}C$ and then fired at $750^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$ in a 12.1% humidified $Ar-O_2$ atmosphere. We found that the microstructure varied significantly with the firing temperature. The textures of all of the films were similar and mainly biaxial. For the film fired at $775^{\circ}C$, the critical current was obtained to be 39 A/cm-width (corresponding critical current density is 2.0 MA/$cm^2$).

  • The purpose of this work is to develop, integrate, and implement an optical characterization method to evaluate physical properties in coated conductors and investigate the local distribution of the causes of degraded performance. The method that we selected at this moment is Raman scattering spectroscopy, which is accompanied with measurements of local supercurrent transport, phase composition, microstructure, and epitaxy quality for coated conductors that range in size up to multi-meter-length tapes and that embrace the entire tape embodiment (substrate through cap layer). The establishment of Raman spectroscopy as an on-line process monitoring tool is our eventual goal of research, but it requires very robust and cost-effective equipments. We analyzed $YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin films grown at various substrate temperatures by using Raman spectroscopy. YBCO films were grown by a high-rate electron-beam co-evaporation method. Raman spectra of YBCO films with lower-transport properties exhibit additional phonon modes at ${\sim}300cm^{-1}$, ${\sim}600cm^{-1}$ and ${\sim}630cm^{-1}$, which are related to second-phases such as $Ba_2Cu_3O_{5.9}$ and $BaCuO_2$. We propose a new method to characterize Raman spectra of coated conductors for an in-line quality control.

  • To investigate the influence of strip width and inter-strip separation on the ac loss, arrays of parallel strips with different widths and separations were prepared. Studies on the hysteresis-loss characteristics of multifilamentary YBCO films were performed. The local magnetic field due to magnetization currents is measured by a scanning Hall probe microscope. Based on these results a conceptual design for a low loss YBCO coated conductor is suggested.
