  • YBCO coated conductors have been fabricated with a newly developed oxide-precursor-based MOD process. The precursor solution was synthesized with low cost YBCO powders as starting materials and YBCO coated conductors have been deposited on IBAD substrate ($CeO_2$/IBAD-YSZ/SS). YBCO coated conductor prepared by dip coating shows transport $I_c$ of 15A/cm-w at 77 K. Microstructural and crystallographic analyses indicate that YBCO layer was grown in epitaxy with substrate and exhibited well-developed dense microstructure. Also discussed are processing and analysis of YBCO coated conductor by slot-die web coating method. It was shown that this oxide-based MOD process provides a low cost route to coated conductor with high $J_c$.

  • A $Y_1Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ square spiral microstrip antenna (YBCO antenna) was epitaxially grown on a $LaAlO_3$ substrate by laser ablation. Also fabricated was a gold square spiral microstrip antenna (gold antenna) having the same structure as that of the YBCO antenna in order to compare the properties of both antennas. Both the YBCO antenna and the gold antenna were operated in Ku (12-18 GHz) band, and their properties such as the return loss, SWR, power gain, and radiation patterns were investigated at 77 K. The return loss below -10 dB was obtained in two frequency ranges, i.e., 14.05-14.90 GHz, and 16-18 GHz for the YBCO antenna at 77 K (YBCO superconducting antenna), and in the frequency range of 15.05-17.60 GHz for the gold antenna at 77 K. The SWR bandwidths are 0.85 GHz and 2 GHz for the YBCO superconducting antenna, and 2.55 GHz for the gold antenna at 77 K. The gain improvement of the superconducting YBCO antenna over the gold antenna at 77 K was about 10 dB in the frequency range of 16 GHz to 18 GHz. The radiation patterns show the YBCO superconducting antenna has the omni-directional property of a spiral antenna.

  • A low cost MOD processing using YBCO oxide powder as a starting precursor was employed for fabrication of YBCO thin films. YBCO oxide is advantageous over metal acetates or TFA salts which are popular starting precursors for conventional MOD-TFA process. YBCO thin films were prepared by oxide-precursor-based MOD process and annealing condition was optimized. The YBCO thin film annealed at 78$0^{\circ}C$ shows no transport $I_c$ and poor microstructure. However, the YBCO thin film annealed at higher temperature shows improvement in microstructure and current transport property. In order to improve critical current, YBCO thin film was prepared by double coating method. YBCO thin film prepared with double coating approach shows enhanced superconducting performance ($I_c$>100A/cm-w).

  • The Ag thin film of YBCO (yttrium barium copper oxide) CC (coated conductor) protect the YBCO layer and, at the same time, affects the electrical characteristics of the YBCO CC. Therefore, YBCO CC with the commercialization of the Ag thin film layers makes it easy to establish a process, it can lead to a variety of characteristic changes in YBCO CC. In this paper, plasma surface treatment was carried out to facilitate the deposition of the Ag thin film and the deposition process of YBCO CC. Surface roughness from the test results was increased as the time of the plasma surface treatment increased from 5 to 20 minutes. On the other hand, the surface roughness was decreased for the time of the plasma surface treatment over 20 minutes. Furthermore, after depositing, the increasing of deposit amount and reduced lifting phenomenon showed a similar tendency with the rise time of surface roughness.

  • In the YBCO matrix, 10wt.% Y$_2$BaCuO$\_$5/ (211 phase) was added, the final 211 content of YBCO made by MTG process could reach about 20wt.% which was the optimum value for the critical current density. And also 10wt.% Ag was added in the matrix of YBCO, which was nearly about the saturate solubility of silver in textured YBCO. SmBaCuO crystal was grown by the melted-condensed process. A 5${\times}$5${\times}$2㎣ single crystal of SmBaCuO was used to be the seed in the preparation of YBCO. It was proved the orientation of YBCO was the same as the orientation of the SmBaCuO seed. The oxygen absorption of bulk oriented YBCO was studied and the heat treatment of oxygen absorption would be in flowing oxygen, at 400$^{\circ}C$ for about 24 hours. the magnetic hysteresis loops were measured by Vibrating Smaple Magnetometer and the J$\_$c/ was calcuated by means of Bean's model.

  • [$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$] thin films were deposited on various buffered-templates by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD). Three different templates of $CeO_2/YSZ/CeO_2/pure-Ni(CYC),\;CeO_2/YSZ/Y_2O_3/Ni-3at.%W(YYC)$ and $CeO_2/IBAD-YSZ$/stainless steel were used. The Ni and Ni-W alloy tapes were biaxially textured by cold rolling and annealing heat treatment. The dense YBCO films were grown on both the IBAD and YYC templates with no microcrack, while the YBCO films on the CYC templates were grown with the formation of microcracks and NiO. The YBCO film on the YYC template showed the higher $I_c$ than that on CYC template. Especially, the IBAD templates with a thin $CeO_2$(type I) and thick $CeO_2$(type II) top layer were used to compare the deposition nature of the YBCO on them. Comparing the current property of the YBCO films on IBAD templates, the YBCO film deposited on thick $CeO_2$ layer was better than the film on thin $CeO_2$ layer.

  • We have measured the trapped field of YBCO bulk with different configuration by applying the magnetic field of $Nb_3Sn$ superconducting magnet. Initially the circular type of YBCO bulk superconductor was prepared and then hole, parallel to the c-axis and located at the center of bulk was mechanically drilled. The YBCO bulk with hole was filled with resin. Typical size of hole in YBCO bulk was 10 mm in diameter. Trapped field characteristics were compared with different specimen conditions. Our preliminary result indicates the increment rate of trapped field, 0.232 kG, measured on the YBCO without hole was much higher than that, 0.011 kG, measured on YBCO with hole.

  • In this paper, by using the electrophoresis, preparation of YBCO superconducting wire deposited on metal Ag base wire was studied with its Properties. YBCO Powder could be prepared by solid state reactions with calcining and sintering processes. Superconducting wire prepared on metal Ag wire used as cathode of deposition base could be also fabricated in the YBCO/acetone-dispersed solution to obtain several tens of re thick films. And then it could be used as superconducting wire for measurement after calcination, sintering and oxygen absorption processes. In the process of film deposition, a catalyst I$_2$added into the suspension solution was very useful for preparing thick film of YBCO, and BaF$_2$ of additive material was also necessary for preparing crack-free wire of YBCO superconductor. As a result, YBCO superconducting wire added 2~3wt.% of BaF$_2$\ulcorner with catalyst, 12 had better deposition condition for uniform and dense YBCO wires, and critical current density, Jc was calculated at the value of 1,458A/$\textrm{cm}^2$(more than 10$^{3}$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ ,77K, o[T]) of 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick sample by 4 point prove method.

  • The growth properties of MOD-YBCO films were investigated. To enhance the growth rate of YBCO layer and inhibit the build-up of HF gas during the annealing process in TFA-MOD for YBCO coated conductors the method of low pressure annealing was employed. Total pressure was changed from 700Torr to 1Torr and its effect on growth of YBCO films was compared with atmospheric one. The lower Pressure was effective to control of the pore size in MOD method . Surface morphology of YBCO films processed at low total pres sure was rough and composed of random YBCO (103) grains. But large pores, usually observed at atmospheric process in MOD disappeared and also the number of pores was reduced at low pressure annealing. Also discussed ate the effects of Fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor solution on the development of microstructure. Dense surface me phology and with less and small pores can be provided through controlling Fluorine content.

  • A low cost YBCO oxide powder was employed as a starting precursor for MOD process. YBCO oxide is advantageous over metal acetates or TFA salts which are popular starting precursors for conventional MOD-TFA process because that YBCO oxide precursor is cheap and easy to control molar ratio. YBCO thin films were prepared by this oxide-precursor-based MOD process and annealing condition was optimized. The YBCO thin film annealed at below $780^{\circ}C$ shows no transport $I_c$ and poor microstructure. Raman spectroscopic study of YBCO thin film indicates that YBCO thin film prepared at below $780^{\circ}C$ contains a number of imperfections such as non-superconducting $BaCuO_2$ phase, cation disorder, etc. However, the YBCO thin film treated at above $800^{\circ}C$ shows improvement in microstructure and current transport properties. This research was supported by a grant from Center for Applied Superconductivity Technology of the 21st Century Frontier R&D Program funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea.
