In this study, SPT, FV, and CPT tests were performed at five very soft grounds in southern coast of Korea to characterize the $S_u$ of very soft ground. In addition, a new modified SPT that is applicable to very soft ground was developed. Tests results showed that in very soft ground (N<2), the $S_u$ was lower than 12.5 kPa using the empirical N-Su correlation, and lower than 50 kPa and 65 kPa using vane shear test and CPT, respectively. It was shown that the results of in-situ tests were higher than those estimated from the N-Su correlation, and it was also demonstrated that the range of estimated $S_u$ was quite wide. New correlations that relate the modified SPT $N_m$ with Su from FV and CPT were developed, which are $S_u=1.76N_m-10.47$ and $S_u=1.82N_m-9.71$, respectively.
To assess the analytic performance of immunoradiometric TSH assay (IRMA TSH), assay precision determined by intra and interassay variance, assay accuracy determined by dilution and recovery study, were evaluated by using two commercial kit $(Abott^{(R)}\;and\;Daichi^{(R)})$. Normal range of basal serum TSH and TRH stimulated TSH increment were also determined in 234 healthy subjects (male 110, female 124; age 20-70) and 30 voluteers (male 10, female 20; age 21-26). In addition, basal TSH levels of 70 patients with untreated hyperthyroidism, 50 untreated hypothyroidism, and 60 euthyroidism were measured to assess the clinical utility of IRMA TSH. The detection limit of IRMA TSH was 0.04 mU/l and 0.08 mU/l by Abott Kit and Daichi kit respectively. Using Abott kit, intra assay variance were 2.0, 3.1 and 1.4% in mean TSH concentration 2.4, 31.6 and 98.2 mU/l repectively and interassay variance were 2.0 and 3.2% in mean TSH concentration 2.3 and 31.3 mU/l. Mean recovery rate was 92.5% and dilution study showed nearly straight line. When Daichi kit was used, intrasssay variance were 5.6, 5.2 and 6.2% in mean TSH concentration of 2.4, 31.6 and 98.2 mU/l respectively and interassay variance were 7.1 and 7.4% in mean TSH of 2.3 and 31.3 mU/l. Mean recoveray rate was 89.9%. Normal range of basal TSH and TRH stimulated peak TSH were 0.38-4.02 mU/l and 2.85-30.8 mU/l repectively (95% confidence interval, Abott kit used). Sensitivity and specificity of basal TSH levels for diagnosing hypothyroidism as well as specificity for diagnosing hyperthyroidism were 100% by using both kit. Sensitivity of basal TSH level for diagnosing hyperthyroidism was 100% when TSH levels were measured by Abott kit while that was 80.9% when measured by Daichi kit. These results suggest that IRMA TSH was very precise and accurate method and might be used as a first line test in the evaluation of thyroid function.

Purpose : We investigated the safety of Intrabeam$^{TM}$ system, X-ray unit for Intraoperative Radiotheray (IORT) by measuring surface dose using Optically Stimulated Luminescent Dosimeter(OSLD). Materials and Methods : 30 patients were selected, who were in breast cancer patients and had an operation of breast conserving surgery (BCS). At the inner surface of tumor bed, 20 Gy were described, and 5 Gy at 1cm depth from the inner surface. Along the size of tumor bed which could be decided after resection of tumor, the size of applicator were determined. Usual treatment time were from 18 to 40 minutes. For the measurement of surface doses, OSLD were placed at superior(U1,2), inferior(D1,2), lateral(L1,2) and medial(M1,2) directions from the center of applicator. Each direction, two OSLD were placed at 0.5 cm and 1.5 cm from the center. Mean, maximum, and minimum doses were analyzed to be compared. Results : Mean values were U1 $2.23{\pm}0.80Gy$, U2 $1.54{\pm}0.53Gy$, D1 $1.73{\pm}0.63Gy$, D2 $1.25{\pm}0.45Gy$, L1 $1.95{\pm}0.82Gy$, L2 $1.38{\pm}0.42Gy$, M1 $2.03{\pm}0.70Gy$, and M2 $1.51{\pm}0.58Gy$. Maximum values were 4.34 Gy at U1, and Minimum values were 0.45 Gy at M2. 13.3 % of patient (4pts out of 30) were reported that surface dose were over 4 Gy. Conclusion : The fact that skin dose of all patients were less than 5 Gy based on OSLD measurement showed the safety of Intrabeam$^{TM}$ system. In the relatively small breast volume, the tendency that surface dose was increased had been shown, which was analyzed by the data of patients who irradiated over 4Gy at skin surface. Therefore, for appropriate indication for IORT, it is suggested that breast volume as well as the size and position of tumor should be carfully considered.

To study the effect of foaming agent on the characteristic of mortar, the tests of water-cement ratio and bulk density of mortar were done under the different mixing ratio with G. U and J foaming agents. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. At the mixing ratio of 1 : 4 and 0.5% of foaming agent, the highest water-cement ratio was 90% by G, 88.3% by U and 70% by J foaming agent, respectively, being lower than 91.6% of that of cement mortar. 2. At the mixing ratio of 1 : 3 and 3.0% of foaming agent, the water-cement ratio was decreased up to 22.0% by G and 24.1% by U foaming agent, respectively, but it gradually was increased in richer and poorer mixing ratio. At the mixing ratio of 1 : 4 and 3.0% of foaming agent, the water-cement ratio was decreased up to 53.1% by J foaming agent, but it gradually was increased in richer mixing ratio. 3. At the mixing ratio of 1 : 1 and 0.5% of foaming agent, the highest bulk density was $1.981g/cm^3$ by G, $1.863g/cm^3$ by U and $1.149g/cm^3$ by J foaming agent, respectively, being lower than $2.048g/cm^3$ of that of cement mortar. 4. At the mixing ratio of 1 : 2 and 3.0% of foaming agent, the bulk density was decreased up to 20.7% by G, 23.7% by U and 56.5% by J foaming agent, respectively, but it gradually was increased in richer and poorer mixing ratio. 5. The water-cement ratio and bulk density were decreased in more addition of foaming agent, respectively, multiple regression equations of water-cement ratio and bulk density were computed depending on a function of mixing ratios and addition of foaming agents.
Our previous study showed that a novel synthetic shikonin derivative, 6-(1-hydroxyimino-4-methylpentyl)5,8-dimethyoxy 1,4-naphthoquinone S-52 (DMNQ S-52) induced apoptosis. In the present study, we investigated its anti-metastatic activities as compared with shikonin because DMNQ S-52 was synthesized for overcoming weak points of shikonin such as high toxicity, low solubility and deleterious effects. DMNQ S-52 showed the weaker cytotoxicity $(IC_{50};\;12.3{\pm}1.6\;{\mu}M)$ against Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells than that of shikonin $(IC_{50};\;4.2{\pm}1.1\;{\mu}M)$. DMNQ S-52, at non-toxic concentrations $(less\;than\;10\;{\mu}M)$, significantly inhibited the invasion and migration of LLC cells. DMNQ S-52 also significantly inhibited the production of MMP-9, MTl-MMP and uPAR. Moreover, daily i.p. administration of DMNQ S-52 at dose of 5 mg/kg in mice resulted in a potent inhibition of the primary tumor size of LLC in the lung as well as the metastasis of lymph nodes. These findings suggest that the DMNQ S-52 has therapeutic potential to inhibit metastasis via inhibition of MMP family and uPA/plasminogen system.

Fructooligosaccharides have been mainly produced by microbial fructosyltransferases (FTase) enzymes. The present work focuses on the optimization of medium composition and cultivation parameters affecting FTase produced by Penicillium aurantiogriseum AUMC 5605 in shake flask cultivation. FTase production was optimized in two steps using DeMeo's fractional factorial design. A 1.46-fold increase in FTase production (105.4 U/mL) was achieved using the optimized culture medium consisting of (g/L): sucrose, 600; yeast extract, 10; $K_2HPO_4$, 5; $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, 0.5; $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, 1.0 and KCl, 0.5. The obtained results showed that the maximum FTase enzyme activity was produced at initial cultivation pH values ranging from 6.0-6.5, at agitation speed of 200 rpm and using vegetative fungal cells as inoculum. Moreover, results showed that optimization of medium composition and some cultivation parameters resulted in an increase of about 93.7% in the enzyme activity than the nonoptimized cultivation conditions after 96 h of cultivation. Additionally, maximum production and specific production rates recorded 2340 U/L/h and 102 U/L/h/g cells, respectively.
To investigate water mass structure and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) distribution in Chinhae Bay, temperature, salinity and DO were observed in the bay in summer and winter from 1990 to 1993, and two-dimensional tidal current and parameter log($H/U^3$) were computed. Shallow water fronts in the bay were formed in summer in Kaduk channel and the central part of the bay having log($H/U^3$) values of $2.0{\sim}2.5$. Oxygen deficiency at the bottom layer in summer occurred in the western and northern part of the bay with weak tidal current, where the value of log($H/U^3$) was more than about 3.5 and $M_2$ tidal current was less than about 20 cm/s. DO concentration at the bottom layer of Kaduk channel and the central channel of the bay having the strong tidal current was more than about 3.5 mg/l. The isolines of DO concentration were nearly parallel to the isovelocity, and the concentrations correlated with the frontal location. The frontal location and DO distribution were influenced by tidal range, river inflow and meteorological conditions, and also correlated with bottom slope characteristics.

A homologous series of twenty, hitherto unreported, analogues of 5-halosubstituted $1, 3-Bis(\omega-cyanoalkyl)uracil$acyclic nucleosides were synthesized by the series of alkylation reactions of 5-halouracils with the corresponding chloroacetonitrile, chloropropionitrile, chlorobutyronitrile and 5-chlorovaleronitrile $(Cl-(C_ 2)_n-CN: n=l, 2, 3, 4)\; in\; anhydrous\; DMSO\; (or DMF)/K_2CO_3(or NaH)\; under\; 75^{\circ}C$ temperature. Antitumor activities for the synthesized compounds were determined against three cell lines (FM-3A cell, P-388 cell and U-938 cell lines). The compounds that exhibited moderate activity to significant activity, included la-b, 2a-b, 3a-c, and 4a, whose compounds were active against P-388, FM-3A and U-937 cell lines with the compounds la, lb, and 2a, showing significant antitumor activity (inhibitory concentrations $(IC_{50})$ ranged from 2.2 to $7.0\mug/ml$). Their strucrure-activity relationship did not show any activity differences in their effective chain length (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl) in 1, 3-bis(.omega.-cyanoalkyl) uracils.
The heterogeneous postal delivery model assumes that each intermediate node in the multicasting tree incurs a constant switching time for each message that is sent. We have proposed a new model where we assume a more generalized switching time at intermediate nodes. In our model, a child node v of a parent u has a switching delay vector, where the ith element of the vector indicates the switching delay incurred by u for sending the message to v after sending the message to i-1 other children of u. Given a multicast tree and switching delay vectors at each non-root node 5 in the tree, we provide an O(n$^{\frac{5}{2}}$) optimal algorithm that will decide the order in which the internal (non-leaf) nodes have to send the multicast message to its children in order to minimize the maximum end-to-end delay due to multicasting. We also show an important lower bound result that optimal multicast switching delay problem is as hard as min-max matching problem on weighted bipartite graphs and hence O(n$^{\frac{5}{2}}$) running time is tight.
Previous studies have shown that kimchi and kimchi-derived 3-(4'-hydroxyl-3', 5'-dimethoxyphenyl) propionic acid have anti-oxidative and hypolipidemic effects in rats and rabbits. This study was designed to investigate whether chemically synthesized 3-(4'-hydroxyl-3', 5' -dimethoxyphenyl) propionic acid (HDMPPA) may ameliorate oxidative stress through the regulation of nuclear factor KB (NFkB) activation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. Treatment of RAW 264.7 cells with 400 uM of HDMPPA significantly reduced LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production. Treatments with HDMPPA at 100 uM to 400 uM concentrations significantly elevated glutathione (GSH) level. However, cell viability and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) concentrations were not affected by the concentrations of HDMPPA used. The specific DNA binding activities of NFKB, a transcription factor which is sensitive to oxidative stress, were not down-regulated by HDMPPA treatments. These results suggest that HDMPPA may have weak anti-oxidative activity against LPS challenge by scavenging NO and stimulating GSH production.
