  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color changes of the composite resin resulting from xenon lamp exposure in different environments. Composite resin (Z 250 ; shade Al, A2, A3, A3.5, and A4) were applied in a cylindrical metal mold. Seventy five specimens according to environments of exposure were made as follows; Group I aluminum foiling of the specimens in the air at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. Group II : exposure of xenon lamp to the specimens in the air at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. Group III: exposure of xenon lamp to the specimens in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. The color characteristics ($L^{*},a^{*},b^{*}$) of the specimens before and after exposure of xenon lamp were measured by spectrophotometer and the total color differences (${\Delta}E^{*}$) were computed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In all groups except A1 shade of group III, the ${\Delta}E^{*}$ values presented below 2.0, and group III showed the highest ${\Delta}E^{*}$ values followed by group II and group I in a decreasing order(p<0.05). 2 In all shades and groups, the more the exposure time of xenon lamp and the lighter the shade were, the higher the tendency for discoloration (p<0.05). 3. The composite resins which was exposed to xenon lamp in the distilled water was more discolored than those in the air (p<0.05). 4. The major changes of composite resins which were exposed to xenon lamp in the air were an increase in yellowness through a positive shift of the $b^{*}$ value, and those in the distilled water were an increase in darkness and yellowness through a negative shift of the $L^{*}$ value and a positive shift of the $b^{*}$ value.

  • The effect of structured water by dissolution of xenon was examined from the view point of the suppression of both browning and respiratory metabolism of broccoli. The structured water is formed duet to hydrophobic interaction when xenon gas dissolves into water. NMR measurements were carried out to determine proton spin-spin relaxation time, T2, for water. There was a difference in proton T2 between distilled water and structured water. This can be interpreted as the change of water structure. Fro the broccoli cut in half stored for 16 days at 279K, the section color did not change appreciably for the sample whose water was structured by dissolution of xenon whose initial partial pressure was 0.39MPa. In contrast to this, the browning of section surface was observed for the sample stored under the condition of nitrogen gas at the same partial pressure as xenon and for the sample stored under atmospheric condition . These results led to the conclusion that the suppression of b owning by oxidation was due to structured water but not to applied pressure. Adding to this, the water structured by xenon has resulted in suppression of respiratory metabolism of broccoli.

  • This study was executed to substitute Carbon-arc method, which is a method currently used for testing light-fastness of military textile products, with Xenon arc method. Specimens used in the study were classified according to the fabric material and color of military textile products and were composed of 11 items of 42 kinds with different colors. Light-fatness test was done by comparing the result of Carbon-arc(KS K 0700) and Xenon arc(KS K ISO 105-B02) method. In Xenon arc method, blue wool reference materials of 1~8 was used, and exposure condition preferred in American continent and light exposure method 3 were applied. After testing with both methods, grade of light-fastness, color difference, reflectance and color were examined. Even though there was a slight difference among 42 specimens used in the test, results exceeded the quality standard both in Carbon-arc-lamp and Xenon arc-lamp. Therefore, it was confirmed that applying KS K ISO 105-B02 together in the KS K 0700-regulated Ministry of National Defense standard and purchase order would also fit.

  • The emission of microwave sulfur lamp is mainly composed of visible light. This lamp producing little infrared radiation, has high light efficiency, long lifespan and less power consumption. In comparison with xenon lamp, growing under sulfur lamp apparently postponed jointing, increased the number of tillers, accelerated root growth of wheat. Relatively, xenon lamp evidently promoted heading and grain maturation. The development characteristics of wheat plant under sulfur lamp were more similar with that in natural condition.

  • Time-optimal control for dmping a one-dimensional xenon-induced spatial power oscillations in pressurized water reactor is studied. Linearized system equations describing the spatial xenon oscillations have been derived based on lambda mode analysis. Optimal control strategies, eventually bang-bang controls, have been drawn applying Pontryagins Minimum Principle, subject to a band constraint on available contros strength. Validity of the linearized system equations and optimal control strategies derived has been demonstrated through conputer simulations which incorporate the finite difference method for one dimensional axial geometry, for the soulution of the two-group neutron diffusion equations. The results obtained through computer simulations show that xenon-induced transients can be suppressed successfully with bang-bang control.

  • The positive column of a discharge tube filled with a mixture of mercury-xenon has a tendency to become contracted at room temperature. However, once the tube temperature is raised over 50 [$^{\circ}C$], the positive column changes from a contracted state to a diffused state. The xenon emission is stronger in the contracted positive column than in the diffused column. Alternatively, the mercury emission is more intense in the diffused positive column, and the luminance of the phosphor coating on the inner surface of the tube is higher than that in the contracted positive column. Moreover, higher luminance can be obtained by increasing the xenon pressure.

  • One of the most important operations in nuclear power plants is load following, in which an imbalance of axial power distribution induces xenon oscillations. These oscillations must be maintained within acceptable limits otherwise the nuclear power plant could become unstable. Therefore, bounded xenon oscillation is considered to be a constraint for the load following operation. In this paper, the design of a sliding mode control (SMC), which is a robust nonlinear controller, is presented.SMCis ameansto control pressurized water nuclear reactor (PWR) power for the load following operation problem in a way that ensures xenon oscillations are kept bounded within acceptable limits. The proposed controller uses constant axial offset (AO) strategy to ensure xenon oscillations remain bounded. The constant AO is a robust state constraint for the load following problem. The reactor core is simulated based on the two-point nuclear reactor model with a three delayed neutron groups. The stability analysis is given by means of the Lyapunov approach, thus the control system is guaranteed to be stable within a large range. The employed method is easy to implement in practical applications and moreover, the SMC exhibits the desired dynamic properties during the entire output-tracking process independent of perturbations. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in terms of performance, robustness, and stability. Results show that the proposed controller for the load following operation is so effective that the xenon oscillations are kept bounded in the given region.
