Comparison of the fluid simulation with experimental data of excited Xe species density in PDP cell

  • We have compared 2-D and 3-D fluid simulation results of alternating current plasma display panel (AC-PDP) cell with experimentally measured two kinds of excited Xe species $Xe^{\ast}(^{3}P_{1})$ and $Xe^{\ast}(^{3}P_{2})$ characteristics. Although direct experimental access and diagnostics of the discharge in a PDP cell is problematic due to the small cell size, some of experimental technologies have made it possible to diagnose the behavior of excited Xe species [1, 2]. The simulation shows the similar characteristics to the experimental results in the excited Xe species density distribution and the number of excited Xe atoms in anode and cathode region. In certain cases, we obtained the arch-shaped discharge path between two sustain electrodes due to the additional pulse applied to address electrode analogous to experiment. This long path discharge induced higher luminous and discharge efficiency compared to the standard case.

  • 플라즈마 현상의 정량적 이해를 위해서는 원자나 분자기체가 가지고 있는 정확한 전자충돌단면적과 그 전자수송 계수의 값을 필요로 한다. 본 연구에서 사용하고 있는 Kr과 Xe 원자기체는 PDP와 무전각램프 등 다양한 산업 응용분야에 이용되고 있다. 따라서 2항 근사 볼츠만 해석에 의해 기체압력 1[torr]의 조건에 $0.001{\sim}500$[Td]의 광범위한 E/N에서 순수 Kr과 Xe 원자기체의 전자이동속도 W, 종 횡축확산계수 $ND_L$$ND_T$, 전리계수 $\alpha$/N의 전자수송 계수를 계산하고 물성 해석하였다.

  • Discharge of the flat lamp lighting source research are requested very much. For improving brightness, life time, efficiency of flat lamp, plasma diagnosis of the flat lamp lighting source to understand property of lighting source is very important, distance of discharge electrode is 5.5mm and width is 16.5mm, we measured electron temperature and electron density measured with single langmuir probe in flat lamp, we tested the discharge from 100 Torr to 300 Torr pressure, the Pulse is rectangular pulse with frequency 20kHz and Duty ratio 20%. Resultly, electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the gas pressure and electron temperature decreases and electron density increase as increase the voltage.

Long Gap Hump 전극구조를 가진 ac PDP에서의 Xe-Ne 가스의 방전 특성 연구 (A Study of Discharge Characteristics in Xe-Ne Gas Mixture for ac PDP with Long Gap Hump Electrode)

  • To increase the luminance and luminous efficacy in the discharge for alternating current plasma display panel (ac PDP), the increment of Xe contents and long discharge gap are necessary. However, the driving voltage and the cost of driving circuit increases in the high Xe contents and long discharge path condition. In this paper, a long gap ITO hump electrode (LGH) model for discharge cells of ac PDP is evaluated in the various Xe contents($5{\sim}20%$). The discharge voltage of LGH structure is lower about 30V than that of ITa reference structure with same main discharge gap. The LGH structure has lower power consumption and higher luminance than those of reference structure, respectively. Also, the luminous efficacy of LGH structure is higher about 20% than that of ITO reference structure in the 20% Xe contents.

A Simple Ray Tracing Model for Plasma Display Panel (PDP) Cell

  • A simple ray tracing model is developed to establish the relationship between the distributions of observed visible light and the excited Xe species in a PDP cell. The ray tracing model can obtain the density distribution of the excited Xe species. It shows the two independent discharge modes created during a single period of sustaining discharge. The maximum density of excited Xe species is located about $148{\mu}m$ away from the center of the gap between two sustaining electrodes. We also found the loss rate of VUV photons by comparing the luminance profile predicted in our theoretical model from experimental results. According to calculations based on our model, only about 22 percent of the photons can impinge the phosphor layer.

  • AC-PDP(Plasma Display Panel)에 사용하는 MgO 보호막의 이차전자 방출계수(${\gamma}$)는 AC-PDP의 방전특성을 결정짓는 중요한 요소이다. MgO 보호막의 이차전자 방출계수는 AC-PDP에 주입하는 기체의 종류에 영향을 받는다. 현재 AC-PDP에는 방전특성의 향상과 VUV 발생을 위하여 He, Ne, Ar, Xe 등의 비활성기체를 두가지 혹은 세가지로 혼합한 혼합기체가 사용되고 있다. 기체를 혼합할 경우 Penning 효과에 의해 더 좋은 방전특성을 얻을 수 있는 것으로 알려져 왔으며, 이때의 적절한 혼합비율을 찾는 것은 AC-PDP의 효율 개선에 매우 중요하다. 이번 실험에서는 (111), (100), (110) 각각의 방향으로 배향된 MgO Bulk Crystal과 MgO 보호막의 이차전자방출계수를 He+Ne+Xe 삼원기체를 사용하였다. MgO 보호막은 실제 21inch 규격의 Panel을 사용하였으며, 혼합기체의 혼합비율의 Ne:Xe을 99:1, 98:2, 96:4, 93:7과 He+Ne+Xe의 삼원기체로 다양하게 변화시켜 가며 실험하였다.

  • We have measured the excited Xe atoms density in the $1s_5$ metastable states by laser absorption spectroscopy in accordance with various barrier ribs. In this experiment, the average density of one cell in the panel with stripe barrier rib has been measured to be $1.8{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$. The panel with close type barrier rib has been measured to be $5.1{\times}10^{12}cm^{-3}$.
