Purpose: The purpose of this study is to improve a mechanism of expendable bathythermograph measurement by balancing wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part and by removing effects of sea water resistance between XBT(Expendable Bathythermograph) and temperature recorder. Methods: The problems are exactly found out through the analysis of XBT and temperature recorder circuit. A process of XBT manufacturing that balances wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part is added. Results: The results of this study are as follows; the complicated test process such as temperature accuracy test with a cistern is substituted with a simple process of XBT manufacturing such as balancing wire resistances between plus wire part and minus wire part. Then, the temperature accuracy tolerance of XBT is improved up to ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: Consequently, balancing wire resistances and removing effects of sea water resistance improve temperature accuracy of XBT and reduce expensive and harassing process of XBT manufacturing.

본 논문에서는 XBT(eXpendable Bathy-Thermograph) 데이터와 LightGBM(Light Gradient Boosting Model)을 이용하여 잠수함 작전 및 대잠전(Anti Submarine Warfare)에 있어서 군사적으로 중요한 동해의 수직 수온분포를 예측하였다.

Recently, researches on the prediction of sea water temperature using artificial intelligence models has been actively conducted in Korea. However, most researches in the sea around the Korean peninsula mainly focus on predicting sea surface temperatures. Unlike previous researches, this research predicted the vertical sea water temperature profile of the East Sea, which is very important in submarine operations and anti-submarine warfare, using XBT(eXpendable Bathythermograph) data and machine learning models(RandomForest, XGBoost, LightGBM). The model was trained using XBT data measured from sea surface to depth of 200m in a specific area of the East Sea, and the prediction accuracy was evaluated through MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and vertical sea water temperature profile graphs.
A logical measure is suggested to estimate an accurate Sound Speed Profile (SSP) for the unusual variation of salinity in the Yellow Sea. Based on National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Aqua and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite data, this measure identifies the area of temperature inversion effect and expansion of low salinity (<30.5 psu) water. Subsequently, on the area, the Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) mounted unmanned maritime system estimates accurate SSP. In order to carry out this measure conveniently, a flow chart is demonstrated in this research. By using this measure which finds the high variational salinity area, the inaccuracy issue for calculating SSP from Expandable Bathy Thermograph (XBT) is expected to be solved.
High-density temperature and salinity profiles from the successful international Argo project made it possible to reproduce the three-dimensional global ocean state in near-real time, which also increased much attention on the data analysis studies of global ocean. This paper reviewed several important issues on the recent data analysis studies such as systematic biases of XBT (eXpendable BathyThermograph) and Argo data, sea level budget discrepancy between steric height and satellite observed data, heat content change, and the current status of the development of objective analysis fields. This study also emphasized that it is required to carry out very cautious ocean data quality control and understand global-scale ocean variability prior to analyzing the regional-scale ocean climate change, particularly, in the East Asian marginal Seas.

Based on the Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) observation and serial oceanographic observation of National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) during July 2013 to July 2015, we examined the temperature variation in the Ulleung Warm Eddy (UWE) in the East Sea. The UWE was always shown during the observation periods even though it was not the whole shape. The coefficient of variation (CV) was largest in the depth of 250 m at the side of the east coast of Korean Peninsula with $3{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ in temperature. CV of the horizontal distribution at 250 m depth was also largest in the region biased along the east coast of Korea. The warm eddy moved not only to the east-west direction but also to the north-south direction in the viewpoint of horizontal distributions of temperature. This region between the Korean Peninsula and Ulleung island also is the passage of the East Korean Warm Current. This means that interaction between the East Korean Warm Current and periphery of warm eddy makes large in the variation of movement along the east coast of Korean Peninsula. The largest variation of temperature at 250 m depth seemed to be significantly correlated with the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW) underlying Ulleung Warm Eddy. It is suggested that the interaction between the ESIW and UWE is active in the mid-depth along the periphery of UWE.
To investigate a short-term (from 2 hours to 24 hours) variability of a mixed layer, oceanographical data (water temperature, salinity, current) and meteorological data (wind, air temperature, solar radiation) were collected at a site in the Korea Strait at the interval of one hour for 48 hours from October 12 to 14, 1993. The average rates of temporal variations of the mixed layer depth (MLD) and temperature of the mixed layer (MLT), which are very weakly correlated with the wind stress and buoyancy flux at the sea surface, are about 5.2 m/hour and 0.2$^{\circ}C$/hour, respectively. The mixed layer is relatively shallow when both MLT and MLS (salinity of the mixed layer) are low, while MLD is relatively deep when they are high. MLT shows a sudden decrease or increase. Analysis of satellite infrared images and XBT data shows that sudden increase of MLT is caused by advection of warm water. These results suggest that the short-term variation of the mixed layer in the Korea Strait in autumn, in which surface current is relatively strong and different water masses exist, is mainly determined by advection rather than air0sea interaction such as wind stress or buoyancy flux.
The salinity of sea water is known as a less influencing variable in the calculation of the sound speed of the sea water. This study investigated how the low salinity of sea water affects the vertical structure of the sound speed near the mouth of the Yangtze (Changjiang) River when the diluted fresh water extends toward the East China Sea in the summer. As a result of comparing two types of sound speeds considered measured and fixed salinity, sound speeds appeared distinguishable when the halocline formed steeper than the thermocline due to Yangtze-River Diluted Water (YRDW). In addition, unlikely with fixed salinity conditions, when measured salinity was considered, an underwater sound channel appeared in the middle of the thermocline of which the source depth is located. Accordingly, considering the salinity, this study suggests using Expendable Conductivity Temperature Depth (XCTD) and Expendable Sound Velocimeter (XSV) rather than Expandable Bathy Thermograph (XBT) when calculating sound speed because of the strong halocline due to YRDW in the summer.

Natural gas hydrate, a solid compound of natural gas (mainly methane) and water in the low temperature and high pressure, is widely distributed in permafrost region and deep sea sediments. Gas hydrate stability field (GHSF), which corresponds to the conditions of a stable existence of solid gas hydrate without dissociation, depends on temperature, pressure, and composition of gas and interstitial water. Gas hydrate-saturated sediment are easily recognized by the bottom simulating reflector (BSR), a strong-amplitude sea bottom-mimic reflector in seismic profiles. It is known that BSR is associated with the basal boundary of the GHSF, The purpose of this study is to define the GHSF and its occurrence in the southwestern part of Ulleung Basin, East Sea. The hydrothermal gradient is measured using the expandable bathythermograph (XBT) and the geothermal gradient data are utilized from previous drilling results for the adjacent area. By the laboratory work using methane and NaCl $3.0 wt{\%}$ solution, it is shown that the equilibrium pressures of the gas hydrate reach to 2,920.2 kPa at 274.15 K and to 18,090 kPa at 289.95 K for the study area. Consequently, it is interpreted that the lower boundary of the GHSF is about 210 m beneath 400-m-deep sea bottom and about 480 m beneath 1,100-m-deep sea bottom. The resultant boundary is well matched with the depth of the BSR obtained from the seismic data analysis for the study area.
To investigate the physical characteristics and variations of oceanic parameters in the tropical central North Pacific, oceanographic surveys were carried out in summer of 2006 and 2007. The survey periods were classified by Oceanic Ni$\tilde{n}$o Index as a weak El Ni$\tilde{n}$o in 2006 and a medium La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in 2007. The survey instruments were used to acquire data on CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth), XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph), and TSG (Thermosalinograph). The dominant temporal variation of surface temperature was diurnal. The diurnal variation in 2007, when the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a weather pattern was in place, was stronger than that in 2006. Surface salinity in 2006 was affected by a northwestward branch of North Equatorial Current, which implies that the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o affects surface properties in the North Equatorial Current region. Two salinity minimum layers existed at stations east of Chuuk in both year's observations. The climatological vertical salinity section along $180^{\circ}E$ shows that the two salinity minimum layers exist in $2^{\circ}N{\sim}12^{\circ}N$ region, consistent with our observations. Analysis of isopycnal lines over the salinity section implies that the upper salinity minimum layer is from intrusion of the upper part of North Pacific Intermediate Water into the lower part of South Pacific Subtropical Surface Water and the lower salinity minimum layer is from Antarctic Intermediate Water.
