  • This paper describes how to define and implement the schema for 3D virtual objects with physical units so that the objects can be compared in virtual environments based on physical properties, such as length, according to the specified units. We define physical units for virtual objects using the International System of Units and based on the X3D (Extensible 3D) specification. The schema must be defined with validation so that it does not violate the original X3D data structure. In this paper, we have extended the original X3D schema with a physical unit specification, and demonstrate the difference between units-specified and non-units-specified 3D scenes using an X3D browser that we developed.

  • In this study, two standard specifications such as GML (Geography Markup Language) from OGC (Open Geo-spatial Consortium, Inc.) and X3D (extensible 3D) from Web3D consortium were dealt with for a web-based 3D urban application without using commercialized tools. In the first step of this study, DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and 3D GIS data sets were converted to GML structure with attribute schema. Then, these GML elements were projected onto a common coordinate system, and they were converted to the X3D format for visualization on web browser. In this work, a 3D urban data model, as a simple framework model, is extended to a framework model having further detailed information, depending upon application levels. Conclusively, this study is to demonstrate for practical uses of GML and X3D in 3D urban application and this approach can be applied to other application domains regarding system integrators and data sharing communities on distributed environments.

  • Extensible 3D (X3D) is the ISO standard for defining 3D interactive web- and broadcast-based 3D content integrated with multimedia. With the advent of this integration of interactive 3D graphics into the web, users can easily produce 3D scenes within web contents. Even though there are diverse texture nodes in X3D, projective textures are not provided. We enable X3D to provide SingularProjectiveTexture and MultiProjectiveTexture nodes by materializing independent nodes of projector nodes for a singular projector and multi-projector. Our approach takes the creation of an independent projective texture node instead of Kamburelis's method, which requires inconvenient and duplicated specifications of two nodes, ImageTexture and Texture Coordinate.

  • Extensible 3D(X3D) is a software standard for defining interactive web and broadcast-based 3D content integrated with multimedia. The data size of Web3D representation based on polygon meshes is so large that transferring practical data fast is a hard problem. This paper proposes 3D object structure, a new framework for compact 3D representation with high quality surface shape. By utilizing a free form surface technique, qualified surface are transferred with limited amount of data size and rendered. 3D graphic structure can be regarded ad both polygon meshes and free form surfaces. Therefore, it can be easily integrated to existing Web3D data formats, for example VRML & XML. 3D object structure also enables modeling free form surface shapes intuitively with polygon modeling like operations.

  • We propose a method for geographically enhanced representation of social networks and implement a Web-based 3D visualization of geographical contexts in social networks. A renovated social network graph is illustrated by using two key components: (i) GWCMs (geographically weighted centrality measures) that reflect the differences in interaction intensity and spatial proximity among nodes and (ii) MSNG (map-integrated social network graph) that incorporates the GWCMs and the geographically referenced arrangement of nodes on a choroplethic map. For the integrated 3D visualization of the renovated social network graph, we employ X3D (Extensible 3D), a standard 3D authoring tool for the Web. An experimental case study of regional R&D collaboration provides a visual clue to geographical contexts in social networks including how the social centralization relates to spatial centralization.

  • This paper describes the implementation of Direct3D interface library for Python language. DirectX is the most popular library used for 3D games and 3D modelings. However, softwares which use the library can only be developed in the environments provided by Microsoft like Visual Studios and .NET framework. The interface module for Python, this paper presents, will extend the coverage of the useful library DirectX to a language which is not fully supported by Microsoft. The interface techniques described here can be a guide to develop interface modules for other languages too, which make their language more powerful and extensible. This paper describes the implementation techniques to develop the interface module for Python, advantages and disadvantages.

  • Mixed and augmented reality (MAR) refers to a spatially coordinated combination of media/information components that represent on the real world and its objects, and on the other those that are virtual, synthetic and computer generated including any combination of aural, visual and touch. The extensible 3D (X3D) is the ISO standard for defining 3D interactive web-based 3D content integrated with multimedia. In this paper, we propose a model to integrate live actor and entity that captured from Microsoft Kinect to be represented in Web-based mixed augmented reality world by using X3DOM by which X3D nodes can be integrated seamlessly into HTML5 DOM content.

  • The technology of virtual environments has been developed with better-quality appearance on a computer display in mind, but without consideration for objects' precise measurements in physical units. With the increased application of computer graphics in a variety of areas, there is a need for precise measurement functionality in addition to visualization. This paper describes the definition of physical properties using measurement units for X3D based virtual objects, to provide their precise physical information in virtual environments. To this end, we have included the physical property node in the X3D specification. The physical measurement units, such as length, mass, time, temperature, etc., are based on SI units (International System of Units).
