  • Single exposure dual X-ray imaging can be used to separate soft and dense-material images for medical and industrial applications. This study keep focusing baggage inspection system(BIS) specifically. New detector modules for single exposure dual X-ray imaging are consisted of low energy detector (LED) and high energy detector (HED). First, the optimized thickness of copper filter coupled HED to separate low energy and high energy was simulated by the given X-ray energy (140 kVp, 1 mA) using Monte Carlo simulation codes, MCNPX. So as a result of simulation, the copper filter thickness is 0.7 mm. For the design of PIN photodiode, ATLAS device simulation tool was used. 16 channels PIN photodiode of 1.5 mm ${\times}$ 3.2 mm for Dual X-ray imaging detector was fabricated in the process of ETRI. And its dark current and quantum efficiency, terminal capacitance were measured. It was proven that the Lanex Fast B coupled HED were a sufficient candidate to replace the CsI(Tl) commerced in dual X-ray system, since these give a strong signal, overcoming system noise. Finally dual X-ray image was acquired through correction of the LED X-ray Image and the HED X-ray Image.

  • In this paper, we propose an DAP system for dose evaluation of medical and industrial X-ray generator. Based on the DAP measurement technique using the Ion-Chamber, the proposed system can clearly measure the exposure radiation dose generated by the diagnostic X-ray apparatus. The hardware part of the DAP measures the amount of charge in the air that is captured by an X-ray. The high-speed processing algorithm part for cumulative radiation dose measurement through microcurrent measures the amount of charge captured by X-ray at a low implementation cost (power) with no input loss. The wired/wireless transmission/reception protocol part synchronized with the operation of the X-ray generator improves communication speed. The PC-based control program part for interlocking and aging measures the amount of X-ray generated in real time and enables measurement graphs and numerical value monitoring through PC GUI. As a result of evaluating the performance of the proposed system in an accredited testing laboratory, the measured values using DAP increased linearly in each energy band (30, 60, 100, 150 kV). In addition, since the standard deviation of the measured value at the point of 4 division was ${\pm}1.25%$, it was confirmed that the DAP showed uniform measurements regardless of location. It was confirmed that the normal operation was not less than ${\pm}4.2%$ of the international standard.

  • In this paper, we designed the dental surgery system based on PC. This system predict post operated 3-dimensional image, So the patient has no need to take CT after surgery and expose his body to radiological damage. We predict the post operated skull from the patient's CT with pre and post cephalometry X-ray. Our novel procedures, to register X-ray and CT, are based on anatomical landmarks, singular value decomposition. And we display the predicted image 3-dimensionally by surface rendering. We verified this system by dry skull experiment and clinical experiment. When significance level is 0.05, there is on significance.

  • The quality of brazing joints is one of the most important factors that have an effect on the performance of the brazing joint-based heat exchangers with the growing use in industry recently. Therefore, it is necessary to inspect the brazing joints in order to guarantee the performance of the heat exchangers. This paper presents a non-destructive method to inspect the brazing joints of the heat exchangers using X-ray. Firstly, X-ray cross-sectional images of the brazing joints are obtained by using CT (Computerized Tomography) technology. Cross-sectional image from CT is more useful to detect the inner defects than the traditional transmitted X-ray image. Secondly, the acquired images are processed by an algorithm proposed for the defect detection of brazing joint. Finally, two types of brazing joint are examined in a series of experiments to detect the defects in brazing joints. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective for defect detection of the brazing joints in heat exchangers.

  • ln order to manage efficiently many ancient wooden buildings, which have been preserved as cultural properties in Korea, the internal state of wood members should be evaluated exactly and periodically by a NDE (non-destructive evaluation) method. A research project was planned to develop an X-ray CT (computed tomography) system as a NDE method for wood, which could be easily applied in field. This paper includes the first part of this project. First of all, to establish a measuring procedure of wood density using X-ray radiography, the correlation between X-ray intensity and the film brightness was evaluated. Also, initial X-ray intensity was quantified with various radiate conditions controlled by the tube voltage and tube current. And then, the effects of density, annual ring angle, and thickness on the mass attenuation coefficient of wood were examined. Finally, Beer's law was modified with the above results and adopted to calculate the density of wood. As a result of this study, the measuring procedure of wood density was established using a portable soft X-ray device and this procedure was verified with some small wood specimens. This results will he used valuably for the following researches to develop a portable X-ray CT system.

  • In x-ray imaging system, two kinds of noises are involved. First, the charge generated from the radiation interaction with the detector during exposure. Second, the signal is then added by readout electronics noise. But, x-ray images are not modeled by Gaussian noise but as the realization of a Poisson process. In this paper, we apply a new approach to remove Poisson noise from medical X-ray image in the wavelet domain, the applied methods shows more excellent results in cone-beam CT.

  • Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. In this paper, we propose a three dimensional volume reconstruction method, which is an iterative method and as uniform and simulated algebraic reconstruction technique (USART). In this method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed, and also the geometry of the imaging system need to be a priori identified well. That is to say, the relative locations between the x-ray source, imaging plane and the object should be determined exactly by calibration. To achieve this, we propose a series of coordinate calibration methods of the x-ray imaging system using grid pattern images. Some experimental results of these calibrations is presented and discussed in detail ...

  • Three dimensional shape measurement techniques are widely needed in industries for product quality monitoring and control. X-ray imaging method is a promising technology to achieve three-dimensional Information, both the surface and inner structure of an object, since it can overcome the limitations of conventional visual or optical methods such as an occlusion problem or surface reflection properties. In this paper, we propose three dimensional volume reconstruction method based on x-ray stereo imaging technology. Here, the stereo images of an object from two different views are taken by changing the object pose rather than moving imaging plane as in conventional stereo vision method. We propose a series of image processing techniques to extract the features efficiently from x-ray images, where the occluded features in case of normal camera vision could be found ...

  • This paper presents a shape reconstruction method for automatic inspection of the solder joints on PCBs using X-ray. Shape reconstruction from X-ray radiographic image has been very important since X-ray equipment was used for improving the reliability of inspection result. For this purpose there have been lots of previous works using tomography, which reconstructs the correct shape, laminography or tomosynthesis, which are very fast algorithm. Latter two methods show outstanding performance in cross-sectional image reconstruction of lead type component, but they are also known to show some fatal limitations to some kinds of components such as BGA, because of shadow effect. Although conventional tomography does not have any shadow effect, the shape of PCB prohibits it from being applied to shape reconstruction of solder joints on PCB. This paper shows that tomography using Iterative Reconstruction Technique(IRT) can be applied to this difficult problem without any limitations. This makes conventional radiographic instrument used for shape reconstruction without shadow effect. This means that the new method makes cost down and shadow-free shape reconstruction. To verify the effectiveness of IRT, we develop three dimensional model of BGA solder ball, make projection model to obtain X-ray projection data. and perform a simulation study of shape reconstruction. To compare the performance of IRT with that of conventional laminography or tomosynthesis, reconstruction data are reorganized and error analysis between the original model are also performed.
