  • This study examined the α-glucosidase inhibitory, and apoptosis- and anti-muscular-related factors of goat meat extracts from forelegs, hind legs, loin, and ribs. The goat meat extracts were evaluated for their α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The gene and protein expression levels of Bcl-2-associated X (bax), p53, and p21 were examined by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunoblotting in AGS and HT-29 cells. The expression levels of Atrogin-1 and MHC1b were examined by RT-PCR in C2C12 myoblasts, and the expression levels of Atrogin-1, muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx), muscle RING-finger protein-1 (MuRF-1), and myosin heavy chain-7 were investigated by immunoblotting. α-Glucosidase inhibitory activity was higher in ethanol extract than in hydrous and hot water extracts. BAX and p53 expression levels were higher (p<0.05) in AGS cells treated with goat meat extract than those of cells treated with no goat meat extract. In HT-29 cells, the protein expression levels of BAX, p53, and p21 were higher (p<0.05) in the cells treated with goat meat extract than those of cells not treated with goat meat extract. In dexamethasone-treated C2C12 cells, goat meat extract treatment lower (p<0.05) the expression of Atrogin-1 and lower (p<0.05) the expression of MAFbx and MuRF-1. The results of the present study indicate that goat meat extracts have α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro. In addition, apoptosis was induced in AGS cells and HT-29 cells treated with goat meat extract, and anti-muscular atrophy activity was also observed in C2C12 cells treated with goat meat extract.

  • Dose response and time dependence of unscheduled DNA synthesis induced by X-rays were measured to determine if any correlation exists between unscheduled DNA synthesis, modal chromosome number, chromosome exchange and mitotic activity in four mammalian cell strains. Unscheduled DNA synthesis occurred in all strains studied. The rate was dose-dependent and strain-specific. Only HeLa $S_3$ showed a staturated dose response after 4, 000 R, other cells were linearly proportional to dose increases. Time dependence of unscheduled DNA synthesis was completed within 2 hours after irradiation regardless of cell strains. Unscheduled DNA synthesis was not directly related to modal chromosome number, total exchange rate and mitotic activity. Mitotic activity and chromosome exchange were both dose-dependent, but the rates of them were inversely related.

  • Water management is crucial for the performance, durability, and stability of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Due to its importance, various methods for visualizing PEMFC's internal water distribution have been adapted to study and manage water within the cells. However, these methods often require large facilities, leading to high costs and significant barriers to entry. This study addresses these challenges by using a commercial Radiation (X-ray) Generator (RG) for internal water distribution visualization and comparing the results with synchrotron X-ray data from the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) 9D beamline. Despite the lower resolution and potential beam distortion challenges, the RG shows promise for PEMFC water distribution visualization, suggesting the need for further research to refine water attenuation coefficients and build-up factors for improved measurement accuracy.

  • Present study aimed to investigate recovering effect of propolis on blood components and tissues of mouse after low dose irradiation. It is verified that the contents of Fe, Mg, P, Zn and Cu in propolis dosed blood are increased slightly than irradiated blood, however, the contents of Ba and Pb are decreased to one tenth than irradiated blood and the contents of Fe and P are increased to 10% than control group. We consider this result as the propolis acts a role of defence factor minimizing changes of elements caused by irradiation in blood. Among the blood components, Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) value is increased after the radiation but after dosed with propolis and irradiated the value is decreased, suggesting that propolis as a buffering material against irradiation. After dosed with propolis, a number of spermatogenic cells are lowered in testis tissue, however, nucleus and cytoplasm are clearly observed in spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatid cells. And nucleus and membrane of cells in the proximal convoluted tubule of renal tissue are clearly observed. Also, cytoplasmand membrane of surface mucous cells in stomach tissue are appeared in normal which is almost like those of control group. We consider that the propolis used in this study is preventing deformations of cells increasing resistance capacity against irradiation rather than recovering damaged tissues.

  • Among numerous material candidates, Cu(InxGa1-x)(SySe2-y) (CIGS) thin films have emerged as promising material candidates for thin film solar cell applications due to the high energy conversion efficiency and relatively low fabrication cost. The CIGS thin film solar cells consist of several materials, including Mo back contacts, ZnO-based window layers, and CdS buffer layers. All these materials have different crystal structures and contain quite distinct chemical elements, and hence the device characterization requires careful analyses. Most of all, identification of the major trap states resulting in the carrier recombination processes is a key step toward realization of high efficiency CIGS solar cells. We have carried out electrical investigations of CIGS thin film solar cells to specify the major trap states and their roles in photovoltaic performance. In particular, we have used the temperature-dependent transport characterizations and admittance spectroscopy. In this presentation, we will introduce some exemplary studies of DC and AC electrical characteristics of the CIGS solar cells.

  • Ras small GTPases are involved in regulating various cellular signaling pathways including cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Ras GTPase subfamily is comprised of 15 proteins; 11 Ras, 3 Rap, and one Rheb related protein. Some Ras proteins, such as RasC and RasG, have been identified for their major functions, but there are proteins whose functions have not been studied yet, such as RasU and RasX. Here, we investigated the roles of RasU in cell motility and development. RasU shows the highest homology with RasX. To investigate the functions of RasU, rasU null cells were used to observe the phenotype. Cells lacking RasU were larger and more spread than wild-type cells. These results indicate that RasU plays a negative role in cell spreading. In addition, we investigated the roles of RasU in cell motility and development of Dictyostelium cells and found that rasU null cells exhibited decreased random migration speed and delayed developmental process. These results suggest that RasU plays an important role in cell motility and development.

  • This study shows the effect of addition of $LiCoO_2$, with different milling time ranging from 0, 30, 200 hours, to the activated carbon electrode. Test cells consisting of activated carbon (100-X%) and $LiCoO_2$ (X%)were made (where X=10, 20, and 40). Test cells with varying concentrations of $LiCoO_2$ which differ in the milling time showed improved specific capacity compare with the cells fabricated using activated carbon alone. The enhanced capacity may be caused due to the addition of $LiCoO_2$ powders at varying concentration. An improved ESR value obtained may be caused by the smaller particle size of $LiCoO_2$. It was concluded that finer the particle size higher will be the efficiency.

  • Dopant-free silicon heterojunction solar cells using Transition Metal Oxide(TMO) such as Molybdenum Oxide($MoO_X$) and Vanadium Oxide($V_2O_X$) have been focused on to increase the work function of TMO in order to maximize the work function difference between TMO and n-Si for a high-efficiency solar cell. One another way to increase the work function difference is to control the silicon wafer resistivity. In this paper, dopant-free silicon heterojunction solar cells were fabricated using the wafer with the various resistivity and analyzed to understand the effect of n-Si work function. As a result, it is shown that the high passivation and junction quality when $V_2O_X$ deposited on the wafer with low work function compared to the high work function wafer, inducing the increase of higher collection probability, especially at long wavelength region. the solar cell efficiency of 15.28% was measured in low work function wafer, which is 34% higher value than the high work function solar cells.

  • Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) film deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is known to supply excellent surface passivation properties on crystalline Si surface. The quality of passivation layer is important for high-efficiency silicon solar cell. double-layer structures have many advantages over single-layer materials. $Al_2O_3/SiN_X$ passivation stacks have been widely adopted for high- efficiency silicon solar cells. The first layer, $Al_2O_3$, passivates the surface, while $SiN_X$ acts as a hydrogen source that saturates silicon dangling bonds during annealing treatment. We explored the properties on passivation film of $Al_2O_3/SiN_X$ stack layer with changing the conditions. For the post annealing temperature, it was found that $500^{\circ}C$ is the most suitable temperature to improvement surface passivation.

  • Histiocytosis-X is a tenn used to define three diseases with similar morphologic characteristics : Letterer-Siwe diseae, Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Eosinophilic granuloma. In general, they differ in terms of their age of onset, severity of clinical course and site of involvement. Eosinophilic granuloma typically is seen in young adults. Eosinophilic granuloma is diagnosed in the presense of diffuse pulmonary infiltrate, bony involvement. However, the pulmonary radiologic findings of eosinophilic granuloma are variable accordinary to stage of disease. therefore pathologic diagnosis of involving site is essential for confirmative diagnosis of eosinophilic grananuloma. Pathologically. the three disease are characterized by granulomatous infiltration of alveolar septa and bronchial walls and often involvement of bone. The hallmark of this disease is proliferation of the Langerhans' cell. The identifying feature is the X-body or Birbeck granule that is present in Langerhans' cells and histiocytic cells found in the lung of EG patient. We report a case of bilatera1, recurrent and spontaneous pneumothoraces in a 21 year old man with pulmonary histiocytosis-X, which is confirmed by eosinophilc granuloma in bone marrow biopsy and ultrastructural examination in cells obtained from BAL.
