  • The radar backscatter from various earth surfaces is sensitive to the frequency of the incident wave. This study examined the radar sensitivities for surface parameters such as soil moisture content and surface roughness of both bare and vegetated surfaces at X-band. Because L-band frequencies are often used for sensing the surface parameters, the sensitivities of X-band are also compared with those of the L-band. The sensitivities of the X-band radar backscatter were examined with respect to soil moisture content and surface roughness of rough bare soil surfaces. These sensitivities were also examined using the same parameters for vegetated surfaces for various vegetation densities and incidence angles. Use of the X-band radar for soil moisture detection was as effective as L-band radar for bare soil surfaces. For vegetated surfaces, the soil moisture could be detected using an X-band radar at lower incidence angles, where the upper limit of the incidence angles was dependent on vegetation density.

  • This paper describes the development and test result of X-band Transmitter flight model(FM) of STSAT-3 by satellite research center(SaTReC), KAIST. The communication sub-system of STSAT-3 is consist of two different frequency band channels. S-band frequency is used for Telemetry & Command, and X-band frequency is used for mission data. Payload observations data in Mass Memory Unit (MMU) is modulated by QPSK modulator in X-band Transmitter, and then QPSK modulation signal is transmitted to antenna through transfer switch. In this Paper, we described the results of modulation, low-pass filter design, power amp development, and switch test. The FM XTU is delivered Spacecraft Assembly, Integration and Test(AIT) level through the completion of functional Test and environmental(vibration, thermal vacuum) Test successfully.

  • A LEO satellite transmits recorded images to a ground station using an X-band antenna during contact. The X-band antenna points to the ground station according to a TPF (tracking parameter file) during communication time. A TPF generation software generates azimuth and elevation profile which make the antenna point to the ground station using satellite orbit and attitude information and mission information including recording and downlink operation. When the satellite passes above the ground station, azimuth velocity increases rapidly so that jitter may occur if the azimuth velocity is in specific range. In case of realtime mission in which the satellite perform recording and downlink simultaneously, azimuth velocity must be lower than specific value to prevent image blur due to jitter effect. The method to point one virtual ground station has limitation of azimuth velocity reduction. In this paper, we propose the azimuth fixing method to reduce azimuth velocity of X-band antenna. The experimental results show that azimuth velocity of the X-band antenna is remarkably reduced using proposed method.

  • A multi-band, compact, and complex vehicle roof antenna has become important in terms of car exterior design and multi-functions which include Radio, DAB/DMB, SXM, GNSS, Telematics, and V2X. In this paper, we propose a compact multi-band V2X pole-type roof antenna. Using impedance change characteristic, a single pole antenna which has multiband such as radio, DAB/DMB, telematics, and V2X band is proposed. With two patch antennas for GNSS and SXM, the dimension of a multiband roof antenna is 131x63x37mm only.

  • The receiver of this paper is Dual-band monopulse type for prototype of tracking radar. Localization of radar technology is an issue of SamsungThales and go into development. Dual-band radar in comparison with Single-band radar requires higher cost and power consumption but there are many advantages of dealing with jamming, detection range, image signal rejection, cloud-rain influence, clutter, resolution. The receiver is comprised of X-band RF head module, Ka-band RF head module and common IF module. Each signal of X-band and Ka-band is selected by the switch in If module. Phase shifter in IF module of local stage controls the phase of sum, azimuth, elevation channel. In the test result, gain is $40{\pm}3 dB$, isolation of transmitter/receiver is 39 dBc, dynamic range is 110 dB and noise figure of each channel is 4.5dB and 6.9dB.

  • The valence band maximum and the conduction band miminum of GaAs, GaSb, InAs, and InSb (constituent binaries of the quaternaty alloy $Ga_xIn_{1-x}Sb_yAs_{1-y}$) are calculated by using TB analytical approach method. The band alignment types of their heterojunctions are determined directly from their relative position of band edges (VBM and CBM). For example, the GaAs/InAs, GaAs/InSb, and GaSb/InSb are in a type-I, the GaAs/GaSb in a type-II, and the GaSb/InAs and InSb/InAs in a type-III, respectively. The composition dependent VBM and CBM for the $Ga_xIn_{1-x}Sb_yAs_{1-y}$ alloy are obtained by using the univeral tight binding method. For the alloyed heterojunctions, the band alignments can be controlled by changing the composition which induce a band type transition. For the alloy $Ga_xIn_{1-x}Sb_yAs_{1-y}$ lattice mathced to GaSb, the type-II band alignment in the region of $x{\leq}0.15$ is changed to the type-III in the region of $x{\geq}0.81$. On the other hand, the alloy $Ga_xIn_{1-x}Sb_yAs_{1-y}$ lattice mathced to InAs has the type-II band alignment in the region of $x{\leq}0.15$ and the type-III band alignment in the region of $x{\geq}0.81$, respectively.

  • X-band antenna has been widely used to effectively transmit the high resolution image data from the observation satellite to the ground station. To achieve above mission, X-band antenna is mainly composed of the 2-axis gimbal system using stepping motors and gears. However, the micro-vibration induced by the stepping motor actuation and the imperfect gear teeth alignment during this on-orbit operation is the main source of image quality degradation. In this paper, X-band antenna combined with a blade gear for micro-vibration isolation was suggested and investigated. The structural safety of the blade gear with low rotational stiffness was confirmed by structure analysis based on the derived torque budget. The isolation performance of the X-band antenna with the blade gear was verified through micro-vibration measurement test using the dedicated micro-vibration measurement device proposed in this study.

  • The 2nd KOrea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT -2) has been developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) since 2000. Multi Spectral Camera (MSC) is the payload for KOMPSAT -2, which will provide the observation imagery around Korean peninsula with high resolution. KOMPSAT-2 has adopted X-band Tracking System (XTS) for transmitting earth observation data to ground station. For this, data which describes and controls the pre-defined motion of each on-board X-Band antenna in XTS, must be transmitted to the spacecraft as S-Band command and it is called as Tracking Parameter Files (TPF). In this paper, the result of the development of TPF Generation S/W for KOMPSAT-2 X-Band Antenna Motion Control.
