A Study on the Teaching Method of University General English with Poetry: Robert Frost's "Out, Out-" (영시를 통한 대학 교양 영어 교육 방안 연구: 로버트 프로스트의 「꺼져라, 꺼져라-」를 중심으로)

  • This paper emphasizes the effect of using poetry in the University General English education and suggests the teaching method of English education with a Frost's poem, "Out, Out- ." These days, learner-centered English education and integrative study of four linguistic functions, reading, listening, speaking and writing are considered important in the University General English class. Poetry is very effective text for the education purposes. Poetry techniques like a visual image, rhythm, rhyme, or repetition are actually mnemonics and strongly connected to the enhancement of memory and oral linguistic function. This paper suggests the specific education methods in the poetry selection, pre-reading step, reading step and after- reading step with concrete examples of "Out, Out-." These education methods through the 'oral text' can be a good and sustainable model for learner-centered education.

Homosexuality and Utopia: A Reading of Whitman's Calamus (동성애와 유토피아 -휘트먼의 『창포』를 중심으로)

  • My essay aims at illustrating Whitman's homosexual vision of utopia with a close reading of his representative homosexual text, Calamus. His expansive self is based upon his intimate contact with the world and is almost always drawn to a wider vision of community in which different individuals share the locus of commonness and reach beyond their empirical boundaries. While foregrounding the contingent and the singular, Whitman forges bonds with other people through a series of ecstatic moments that carry us into the public sphere and common interests. Contrary to the current Whitman studies, his homosexual text doesn't repress contingency in order to celebrate the universal, but fully develops the commensurability among diverse historical agents. Whitman knows well the social taboos and inhibitions at the time of national crisis and expansion, but keeps imagining the world where homosexuality plays a central and significant role in founding a democratic solidarity and achieving a desirable social structure. His ideal of America is not a deferred wish for the future, but a concrete vision that can be achieved here and now, realized by the spontaneous bonding and instant attraction among free men. Instead of interpreting history or suggesting practical alternatives, he keeps questioning the dominant ideologies and the given orders of social control, and suggests a free and open relationship among men where no exterior power or mediating other intervenes. His utopian vision is radical as well as ideal, in that it rejects the interventions of the power structure and its institutions and courageously inscribes his homosexuality in the process of writing about and reading his contemporary America. As a predecessor of a homosexual utopian vision of America, Whitman has inspired many later poets, showing a possibility of infusing a homosexual identity into a radical imaging of the nation and its future.

Are We Being Globalized?: A Contrastive Analysis of Application Essays

  • The findings in contrastive rhetoric research of the twentieth century have shown that different cultures have different conventions in organizing written texts. These culture-related conventions were claimed to influence English texts written by L2 learners, including Asian learners of English. However, due to the massive inflow of the American culture into Asia as well as increased exposure to English in the midst of globalization of the last decade, it is quite probable that the textual gap between the native English writers and Asian EFL writers have been reduced. The present study investigates the changes that have taken place in EFL writer's knowledge of genre-specific writing over the past decade. To this aim, this study compared four sets of application essays written by four groups of applicants (1) native American applicants in 1993, (2) Korean EFL applicants in 1933, (3) native American applicants in 2003, and (4) Korean EFL applicants in 2003. The results suggested that the disparity between the Korean EFL writers' and the native English writers' texts were becoming less noticeable at the macro-level, possibly due to Korean EFL writers' enhanced textual awareness of English genre structures Pedagogical implications are discussed.

Writer Verification Using Spatial Domain Features under Different Ink Width Conditions

  • In this paper, we present a comparative study of spatial domain features for writer identification and verification with different ink width conditions. The existing methods give high error rates, when comparing two handwritten images with different pen types. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to design the feature with different ink width conditions. To address this problem, contour based features were extracted using a chain code method. To improve accuracy at higher levels, we considered histograms of chain code and variance in bins of histogram of chain code as features to discriminate handwriting samples. The system was trained and tested for 1,000 writers with two samples using different writing instruments. The feature performance is tested on our newly created dataset of 4,000 samples. The experimental results show that the histogram of chain code feature is good compared to other methods with false acceptance rate of 11.67%, false rejection rate of 36.70%, average error rates of 24.18%, and average verification accuracy of 75.89% on our new dataset. We also studied the effect of amount of text and dataset size on verification accuracy.

A Study on the Organization of the 『Yosandangsinjipeuibangkeumnangjibo』 (『요산당신집의방금낭지보(樂山堂新集醫方錦囊至寶)』의 편제에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives : This paper aims to examine the overall form of the 『Yosandangsinjipeuibangkeumnangjibo』 (『Yosandang』). Methods : The table of contents, organization of the body, citations in the 『Yosandang』 were examined, then compared to the organization of 『Donguibogam』 (『Bogam』) and 『Jejungsinpyeon』 (『Jejung』). Results & Conclusions : Based on the organization of the body, it could be determined that Byun Gwangwon referenced 『Bogam』 and 『Jejung』. However, it was found that 『Yosandang』 strived to be more faithful to the 『Bogam』 than the 『Jejung』 while it also tried to minimize the complicatedness of 『Bogam』. Its organization was unique in that it created new chapters and added contents. Also, through examination of the citations, it could be assumed that those in the 『Yosandang』 were secondary citations of the 『Bogam』 and 『Jejung』. Despite these features, it also cited the 『Zhengzhizhunsheng』 and showed efforts to include new knowledge with citation labels such as '新增[newly added]' '自述[original writing]' and 'Yosan(樂山)'. Discussion : The findings of the comparison and examination process of the organization and citations of the book revealed that the uniqueness of the organization of 『Yosandang』 is most obvious in the pediatrics chapter. This indicates that the author's intention was to deal with pediatric diseases professionally.

Design and Implementation of Differencing and Merging Scheme for Cooperative Version Control System (협동 버전제어 시스템을 위한 버전충돌 인지 및 버전병합 기능의 설계와 구현)

  • Version control is an application to maintain consistency between different instances of the same document allowing operations such as navigation, differencing, and merging. Most version control systems, however, lack the support of functionality for cooperative writing environment, such as to represent and store the history of the actions of different individuals, to effectively differentiate and merge the individual actions including the text object, and to manage different access privileges for different granularity and individuals. With the help of Activity IDentification (AID) tag and its unique addressing scheme proposed in this paper, differencing and merging become simple and effective. Access and role control is improved by associating the access right table and role assignment in AID scheme also eliminates the requirements for large storage capacity for version information maintenance.

Exploration of Critical Reflection through Home Economics Pre-service Teacher's Instruction Experience (가정과예비교사의 수업경험을 통한 비판적 반성에 관한 탐구)

  • This study explores the critical reflection process experienced by home economics preservice teachers during practicum. Data were collected in a critical analysis of class, practicum review, and journals written by sixteen preservice teachers. Text material were composed of 188 transcripts on A4 paper and 36 page of mini-notes. The collected data were analyzed by a thematic coding method in qualitative research and proceeded in the order of three steps of transference, coding, and subject discovery. The emerging themes were: 1) Observing class 2) Practicing class 3) Growth of class practice 4) Reflecting class. First, the observing class was an exploration process through the viewing of daily classes that involved the process of recognizing the classroom situation and various classroom contexts. Second, the practicing class was to strengthen the consideration of the class to form a relationship that could lead to learning in educational situations. Third, the growth of class practice was intended to recognize the orientation of the subject matter with pedagogical content knowledge. Four, the reflecting class was the process of experiencing practice with a continuous understanding of the class, class reflection, and changing the perspective from the current status. There is a part where critical reflection is difficult to be promoted deeply during 4 weeks; however, there was a possibility of a reflection practice that could promote achievement through the experience of a practicing class.

The Presentation of Semi-Random Interleaver Algorithm for Turbo Code (터보코드에 적용을 위한 세미 랜덤 인터리버 알고리즘의 제안)

  • Turbo code has excellent decoding performance but had limitations for real time communications because of the system complexity and time delay in decoding procedure. To overcome this problem, a new SRI(Semi-Random Interleaver) algorithm which realize the reduction of the interleaver size is proposed for reducing the time delay during the decoding prodedure. SRI compose the interleaver 0.5 size from the input data sequence. In writing the interleaver, data is recorded by row such as block interleaver. But, in reading, data is read by randomly and the text data is located by the just address simultaneously. Therefore, the processing time of with the preexisting method such as block, helical random interleaver.

  • Storytelling techniques have been using for utilizing in various fields such as education, marketing and so on. In creative content sector, especially, the amount of creating the a newly story content from existing oral tales which are short and quite hard to understand the context has been increased. However, there are some limitations for creating the ideas of the story according to the expansion of the stories while the approach for new adaptation of existing stories is quite challenging. In this paper, therefore, we described the preliminary steps of text analysis and object extraction method for story development which can be applied to the storytelling authoring supported software.

A study on Language Environment and Korean Language Education problems in Sakhalin, Russia (러시아 사할린 지역의 언어 환경과 한국어교육 문제 연구)

  • Sakhalin, Russia is a very specific area for Korean language education. The imposed separation and isolation in this region means the language in Sakhalin is mixed with South Korean, North Korean, Gyeongsang Province dialect, Japanese, and Russian. Scrutiny of the use of the actual language of Sakhalin Koreans is needed, and it is required in supporting Korean language education. In this study, I will cover: 1. Approach should differ depending on the situation of Korean, foreigners, Korean Language School(Hangeul Hakgyo) and Korean classes in local Schools. 2. Tailor-made textbooks for Sakhalin are required. 3. Korean textbooks to match local circumstances are needed. There should be a basic writing text written by a local Korean department professor and supervision or modification, supplements from Korean language education researchers in Korea. 4. Enlarged Korean training programs are needed. Furthermore, if Korean and Russian university students are to study in Korea, there should be programs offering a dual degree among other things. 5. Methodical, overall examination of overseas Korean regions like Sakhalin is necessary. Also in the case of far east Russia, connectivity between Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Sakhalin needs to be strengthened.
