  • The merits of activated carbon for removal of organic compounds have been well known in the various industrial fields. Fixing methods with activated carbon in the non-woven fabric have the advantages of fast adsorption and ease of handling when compared with bonding and coating methods. In this study, we have examined deodorization of non-woven fabrics fixed with activated carbon. We have been tested the deodorization of various kinds activated carbon and non-woven fabric structures. The effective mixing ratio of activated carbon was 5% on the weight of fabrics, which are closely related to the fabric structure. The activated carbon with higher mesh size show the better deodorization effect.

  • The effect of the atmospheric pressure plasma(APP) treatments is experimentally investigated to ascertain the optimum condition to yield the best adhesive properties between a polyamide woven fabric and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR). For the atmospheric pressure flame plasma(APFP) treatment, the optimum number of treatment at given conditions is 2 times. The thermal deformation of the fabric is more serious with increasing the number of APFP treatment. The adhesive strength of the case with APFP treated fabric is increased about 35% when compare to the case with non-APFP treated one for the interface(bonding agent one or two coatings). When the surface is coated twice with the bonding agent, the adhesive energy with APFP treated fabric is increased about 4 times. It was found that the surface modification of polyamide woven fabric by APFP treatment is a fast, economic and applicable method to improve the adhesive properties between woven fabric and rubber when compared to other APP treatments.

  • The main objectives of this research work are to develop conductive glass fiber woven roving and carbon fiber unidirectional fabric composite materials and to determine their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness(EMSE). Epoxy is the matrix phase and glass, carbon fiber are the reinforcement phase of the composite material. Carbon black are incorporated as conductive fillers to provide the electromagnetic shielding properties of the composite material. The amount of carbon black in the composite material is varied by changing the carbon black composition, woven roving and unidirectional (fabric) structure. The EMSE of various fabric composites is measured in the frequency range from 300MHz to 800MHz. The variations of EMSE of woven roving and unidirectional composites with fabric structure, metal powder composite are described. Suitability of conductive fabric composites for electromagnetic shielding applications is also discussed.

  • In this study, the fatigue characteristics and life of a woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite applied to railway vehicles was evaluated. The fatigue test was conducted using a tension-tension load with a stress ratio R of 0.1 and frequency of 5 Hz. Two types of woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite was used in the fatigue test: with and without carbon/epoxy ply reinforcement. In addition, the fatigue life of the woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite was compared with that of aluminum 6005, which is used in the car body and underframe structures of railway vehicles. The test results showed that the failure strength and life of the woven glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite reinforced with three carbon/epoxy plies had a remarkable improvement compared with that of the bare specimen without reinforcement.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the energy saving effects and characteristics of plant growth in a greenhouse with an aluminum multi-layer curtain compared to a greenhouse with non-woven fabric. Method: The dimensions of both greenhouses $43m{\times}3.6m{\times}8m(L{\times}H{\times}W)$, and both used hot air heater systems for maintaining a constant temperature $15^{\circ}C$. Heating characteristics such as solar intensity, inside and ambient temperatures, and fuel consumption were measured and analyzed. Results: The changes of average temperature of both greenhouses during a 15-days (December 06 - 20) showed approximately $26^{\circ}C$ at around 2 pm when the ambient temperature was highest. The greenhouses were set by the heater to keep a temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ from 4 pm to 8 am the following day. The average heat loss (for 15 days) from the greenhouse with an aluminum multi-layer curtain was $161.2-268.4kJ/m^2{\cdot}h$ during the daytime and $152.3-198.1kJ/m^2{\cdot}h$ during the nighttime. The average heat loss (for 15 days) from the greenhouse with non-woven fabric was $155.7-258.9kJ/m^2{\cdot}h$ during the daytime and $144.9-207.0kJ/m^2{\cdot}h$ during the nighttime. The total heat loss (for one day) from the non-woven fabric system was $7,960kJ/m^2$($2,876kJ/m^2$ during the daytime, $5,084kJ/m^2$ during the nighttime). The heat supply over 36 days for the non-woven fabric system was higher than the aluminum multi-layer curtain system by $616.3-65,079.4kJ/m^2$. Conclusions: These results suggest that a greenhouse with an aluminum multi-layer curtain could save energy usage by 35% over a greenhouse with non-woven fabric.

  • This research presents studies on an improved method to predict the thermal conductivity of woven fabric composites, the effects of geometric structures of woven fabric composites on thermal conductivity, and structural optimization to improve the thermal conductivity using a genetic algorithm. The geometric structures of woven fabric composites were constructed numerically using the information generated on waviness, thickness, and width of fill and warp tows. Thermal conductivities of the composites were obtained using a thermal-electrical analogy. In the genetic algorithm, the chromosome string consisted of thickness and width of the fill and warp tows, and the objective function was the maximum thermal conductivity of woven fabric composites. The results confirmed that an improved method to predict the thermal conductivity was built successfully, and the inter-tow gap effect on the composite's thermal conductivity was analyzed suggesting that thermal conductivity of woven fabric composites was reduced as the gap between tows increased. For structural design, optimized structures for improving the thermal conductivity were analyzed and proposed. Generally, axial thermal conductivity of the fiber tow contributed more to thermal conductivity of woven fabric composites than transverse thermal conductivity of the tows.

  • Non-woven fabric is a textile product made by spinning thermoplastic polymers without manufacturing processes such as stretching, doubling, twisting, weaving, and knitting to form a sheet-shaped web in which fibers are tangled with each other, and then combining them by mechanical and physical methods. In addition, the non-woven fabric manufacturing process has various raw material choices, high productivity, so it is a textile manufacturing technology that can have various uses and increase added value. This study was conducted to control the shape and physical properties of products by improving the manufacturing method of melt-blown non-woven fabrics using process technology that easily changes the shape of non-woven fabrics and improves mechanical properties. In particular, it is considered that a non-woven fabric with a thin material shape and improved mechanical properties will be easily applied to a continuous secondary battery manufacturing industry such as roll to roll operation.

  • The properties of a woven fabric made of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) were investigated. The PTT fab-ric of draw textured yarn (DTY) showed excellent stretch as good as a fabric containing spandex. However, the unique stretch of the PTT fabric reduced dramatically by simple heat-treatment even at as low as $80^{\circ}C$. To understand the phenomenon, the crimp rigidity of the DTY was observed by SEM. It was found that the drastic reduction of stretch was caused by irreversible uncrimping of PTT DTY after heat-treatment. Conclusively, it is of importance to optimize the texturing conditions for PTT DTY to make the crimp more stable.
