  • This paper presents the development of the graphic simulator for an assembly workcell. The assembly workcell consists of two PUMA 560 manipulators, a conveyor belt system, a work table, and a vision sensor. In this study, the Petri Net theory is applied to model the assembly workcell and to construct the simulator. The event scheduling approach is used to simulate the cell. In order to show the graphic display of the simulation process, robot modelling, component modelling, and world modelling are included. The developed simulator is used to display the transition of the system state during the simulation. It is also used as a tool in selection the best resource states by studying the performance of the system as the resource states are changed.

  • In recent years, pollution load calculation has become a topic for research that resulted in the development of numerous GIS modeling methods. The existing pollution method for nonpoint source (NPS) can not be indentified and calculated the amount of the pollution precisely. This research shows that the association of typical pollutant concentrations with land uses in a watershed can provide a reasonably accurate characterization of nonpoint source pollution in the watershed using Expected Mean Concentrations (EMC). The GIS based pollution assessment method is performed for three pollutant constituents: BOD, TN, and TP. First, the runoff grid by means of the precipitation grid and runoff coefficient is estimated. Then, the NPS pollution loads are calculated by grid based method. Finally, the final outputs are evaluated by statistical technique. The results illustrate the merits of the approach. This model verified that GIS based method of estimating spatially distributed NPS pollution loads can lead to more accurate representation of the real world.

  • As an interest in the efficiency of public sector expenditures has spread across the world, Korea has operated a self-evaluation system for government projects as a part of the performance-based budget system. However, an evaluation system for public information technology project has been criticized for its lack of validity, which stems from the uniformity of performance management. This study draws insight from knowledge management literature in an attempt to address the problems with the extant performance evaluation system in public agencies. To realize benefits from IT investment, an agency needs to develop its own performance management model for information systems projects, with a focus on the interaction of IT and organizational system. The knowledge management-based framework for IT projects was verified through a case study, with which we discussed the applicability of knowledge management to the evaluation of public information systems projects.

  • Purpose - The study was designed to explore and examine the business relationships of the owners and the employees of Market Basket to analyze the implications of their recent turbulence and decisions. This article focused on two issues - business profit and labor union - to describe the uniqueness of this case. Design, methodology, data, and approach - This article, based on its purpose, applied all three approaches of case studies that are identified and described by Stake (1995), instrumental, intrinsic, and collective, to present the core nature of the issue and to improve and gain a clear understanding of this particular phenomenon. Results - The analysis of this case clearly indicates that seemingly dichotomous concepts of profit and employee welfare are not necessarily antithetical to each other Conclusions - The instant case of Market Basket serves as a testimonial for the rejection of the basic premises of corporate profits and labor unions. This case serves as a model and a practical example for many large retailers, especially the family operated retailers, and workers throughout the world.

  • In the recent Internet environment, there are different competition patterns among competitors as it was before. As we see real world example such as Covisint in automobile industry and Exostar in aerospace industry, collaboration among competitors now takes place and industry-wide B2B marketplaces come into existence. Hence, we suggest the extended system dynamics simulation model based on Kim(2002)’s collaboration profit models in order to explain competitors’ collaboration in the e-business environment. After all, we investigate the necessity of collaboration between competitors, and show the presence of the optimal investment decision making to collaborate. We also show that the effect of collaboration is changed as varying the industry characteristics such as standardization and volatility.

  • This paper develops a new approach to dealing with qualitative reasoning processes involved in managerial decisions, drawing upon choice strategies that have been developed within the general framework of multi-criteria decision making. Issues such as choices under uncertainty and preference formulation are addressed. An MCDM DSS intended to assist in high-level management decisions must focus on helping the decision maker to properly define the problem by providing a structure to it and to dynamically evaluate the alternative courses of action. A conceptual architecture is developed and presented to propose a general model for designing decision support systems specifically designed to assist in MCDM in a managerial context. A commercial loan approval judgment case is described to illustrate the real-world situation where decisions are made under fuzziness and usually require a high degree of intuition and subjective judgment. Development of a prototype system intended to partially represent application of the architecture is described.

  • As a special type of mobile ad-hoc network, Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is considered as an attractive topic by many researchers. In VANETs, vehicles act as routers and clients, which are connected with each other through unreliable wireless links. Due to the dynamic nature of vehicles, developing communication protocols for VANETs is a challenging task. In this paper, we tackle the problem of real-world VANET operations and propose a new dual-level communication scheme through the combination of power and rate control algorithms. Based on the game theoretic approach, the proposed scheme effectively formulates the interactive situation among several vehicles. With a simulation study, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme can achieve better performance than other existing schemes under widely diverse VANET environments.

  • The Internet is changing old organizational schemes, including education. A growing number of universities are creating curriculums to reflect these changes. Economic market is being opened to the international world, and in order to overcome the difficulties are demanding continuous supply of men power from university to efficiently manage human resource and implement superior e-business model. Technology innovation plays an important role in the sustainable grows of the firm in the global economy. The objective of this study is to suggest an e-business curriculum for e-business department. We will analyze what kind of people is needed for e-business, and provide appropriate curriculum for educating suitable human resources, which could be for university program. This study may contribute to the much needed systematic analysis for e-business curriculum. We prioritize e-business curriculum selected and rank their importance through an exploratory study for suggesting the undergraduate curriculum.

  • Sequence tagging is the task of predicting frame-wise labels for a given input sequence and has important applications to diverse domains. Conventional methods such as maximum likelihood (ML) learning matches global features in empirical and model distributions, rather than local features, which directly translates into frame-wise prediction errors. Recent probabilistic sequence models such as conditional random fields (CRFs) have achieved great success in a variety of situations. In this paper, we introduce a novel discriminative CRF learning algorithm to minimize local feature mismatches. Unlike overall data fitting originating from global feature matching in ML learning, our approach reduces the total error over all frames in a sequence. We also provide an efficient gradient-based learning method via gradient forward-backward recursion, which requires the same computational complexity as ML learning. For several real-world sequence tagging problems, we empirically demonstrate that the proposed learning algorithm achieves significantly more accurate prediction performance than standard estimators.

  • This paper describes best-practices in lifting an image metadata standard to the Semantic Web. We provide guidelines on how an XML-based metadata format can be converted into an OWL ontology. Additionally, we discuss how this ontology can be mapped to the W3C's Media Ontology. This ontology is a standardization effort of the W3C to provide a core vocabulary for multimedia annotations. The approach presented here can be applied to other XML-based metadata standards.
