  • Preform design is an effective means of achieving the homogeneous deformation of workpiece materials and decreased load in metal forming. However, this approach has not been applied to equal channel angula. pressing (ECAP). In this paper, plastic deformation behavior of workpieces having four different preform shapes during ECAP was investigated using finite element analyses. The results indicated that a preform design of the workpiece head has a beneficial effect on homogeneous deformation, reducing the maximum pressing load at the initial stage and eliminating folding defects at strain concentration points.

  • An experimental and numerical approach has been carried out to characterize the noise and the safety of circular diamond saw with chinks by laser-cutting. The sound pressure level of a circular diamond saw with chinks was measured when cutting workpieces. Therefore, frequency analysis results show us that the sound level was reduced as position of chinks approach to out-diameter. But the safety of circular diamond saw was lower due to the stress concentrated at the edge of chinks while cutting workpieces. FEM analysis was used for safety evaluation with the variation position of chinks. The noise characteristics of circular diamond saw were also estimated during cutting test.

  • In this paper, a grasping force control of robot hand is presented with consideration of workpiece dynamics. It is difficult to control a manipulator without the knowledge of Its dynamics, because its handling with unknown workpiece may bring about overshoots and vibrations. Then it is necessary to adjust control gains according to the handling workpieces in order to achieve good control performances. The authors propose a new control strategy which uses adaptive observer and VSS (${\underline{V}}ariable$ ${\underline{S}}tructure$ ${\underline{S}}ystem$) controller to subdue these overshoots and vibrations. Some simulations of the proposed method are carried out for a grasping system to control the grasping force to various workpieces, whose dynamics cannot be known in advance.

  • There are two major differences between the centerless infeed grinding process and the centerless through-feed grinding process. One is an axial movement of workpieces, and the other is that several workpieces are ground simultaneously and continuously by through-feeding. Because of these differences, through-feed ground parts inherently possess not only the roundness error but also the tapering error. The aims of the research reported in this paper are to examine this inherent tapering characteristic and to find the effects of grinding variables (center height angle, regulating wheel tilt angle, and shape of grinding wheel surface). To accomplish the objectives, experiments were carried out using two types of cylindrical workpiece shapes. Also, computer simulations were performed using the 3-D through-feed grinding model.

  • In the previous paper, part I, the principal stresses were investigated on the normal tools and the workpieces whose materials were the same epoxy resin. In this paper, are measured and compared the stresses on the normal tools and restricted tools which have three various rake angles. Each restricted tool above has the same restricted angle. The workpieces used in this experiment are made of high quality lead. The photoelastic measuring device is attached to the saddle of the lathe and carried at the same speed as the cutting tool is feeded. The results obtained are summarized as follows; The shear stresses on the tip of the restricted tools of the rake angle .alpha.=12.deg. and .alpha.=0.deg. are less than those of normal tools. But, for the rake angle .alpha.=-12.deg., the former is greater than the latter. The result of photoelastic method shows that in the range of rapid decreasing of normal stress on the tool edge, the shear is maintaining a certain value.

  • Recently, the necessity of the detection of abnormal machining process is being emphasized in order to improve the machining accuracy and reduce the cost in unmanned operating system. The vibration by chatter generated in cutting processes within machine tools is a relative motion between tools and workpieces. So, if the chatter occurs, the surface roughness and accuracy of workpieces will be deteriorate and it leads to the rapid wear of tools. The author intended to use the I /sab/RMS (current of root mean square) of current sigals and the movimg C.V. (coefficient of variation) of each phase for the detection method of chatter.

  • A mathematical model for investigating the form generation mechanism in the centerless thrufeed grinding process is described. The length of the contact line and the magnitude of the grinding force between the grinding wheel and workpieces vary with the change of the axial location of the current workpiece during grinding. Thus, a new coordinate system and a grinding force curve of previous and/or following workpieces are introduced to treat the axial motion. Experiments and computer simulations were carried out using three types of cylindrical workpiece shapes. To validate this model. simulation results are compared with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a straightness measurement system for flat and long workpieces. The measurement system consists of a laser, a CCD camera and processing system, a carrier system with a stylus, and some optical units. The carrier system accompanies the stylus, which displaces and retroreflector along the surface profile. The optical unit is used to optically amplify displacement of the stylus unit. The developed system is applied to a ground surface and a LM guide unit. The experimental results show that the developed system can measure the straightness of flat surface and moving systems.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in cutting characteristics of cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools in the similar application range via turning test of various conditions. The cermet and carbide tools in the range of ISO P10 grade were developed using optimum compositions with a view to obtaining a high toughness and hardness by PM process. First mechanical properties were characterized on these tools. Experimental results of wear behaviour and resistance to fracturing were presented and discussed in the turning of gray cast iron and alloy steels by cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools. The coated carbide tool shows similar cutting performance compared to the cermet, while the cermet has better combination of wear resistance and toughness of high speed (V=500m/min) cutting in comparison with carbide and coated carbide tools, and also shows a potentiality for cast iron cutting. Fe adhesive behaviour on the tools and surface roughness of workpieces were explained by chemical affinity between tools and workpieces.

  • Electropolishing, the anodic dissolution process without contact with tools, is a surface treatment method to make a surface planarization using an electrochemical reaction with low current density. Nitinol is a metal alloy composed of Ni and Ti around 50% respectively which has shape memory effect. Nitinol can be put various applications which require purity and high pricision surface of products. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristic of electropolishing effect for nitinol workpieces. In order to analyze the characteristics of electropolishing effect, surface roughness and micro-burr size were measured in terms of machining conditions such as current density, machining time and electrode gap. The tendencies about improvement of surface roughness and deburring effect by electropolishing for nitinol workpieces were determined.
