  • We examine the effects of the self-reported subjective and the objective health indexes on work compensations. The compensations consist of monetary factors, such as wages, and non-monetary factors reflecting job risks such as the workplace accidence. The wages and workplace injuries are clearly affected by gender and age differences as the subjective and objective health factors of elderly workers are combined with physical and systematic work environments. Mental health problems such as work depression are more serious especially for high income elderly groups. The elderly workers experienced with physical problems and chronic illnesses are led to the decrease in wages and the increase in safety accident risks at work sharply. Therefore, we need to provide supporting services, retirement planning designed by companies, supported by the government enhanced risk working conditions and the weakness on protecting jobs.

This study also shows the differences between the two age groups. The National Survey of Korean Families has been done by the Ministry of Equality and Family on 2010. Respondents selected from national survey were 1016 pre-elderly and 629 elderly. The results of this study are as follows; first, 66% of the respondents chose health as the condition is being the important elements of their happiness following money, work (job), children, spouse and family life. Second, the group of people considering work and health as important elements of their happiness is happiest, but the group considering money and health as the important elements of their happiness feels a lower level of happiness. Third, the pre-elderly chose health as the most important condition, but the elderly chose subjective economic condition, among the factors affecting family strength. Fourth, family strength affects most on in regard to the happiness of pre-elderly and the elderly. Next, the more they are financially stable, physically healthier and living in rural areas, they feel the happier they feel. Based on the results of this study, further studies are needed to determine components of family strength that both pre-elderly and the elderly consider as important elements of their happiness. Support programs for the elderly without a spouse will increase the well-being of the elderly.

  • Living arrangement is considered an important variable in discussing loneliness and the psychological state of the elderly. From this point of view, this study aimed at Identifying the effects of living arrangements, sociodemographic variables, social activities, and social psychological variables on the psychological loneliness of the rural elderly. Though hierarchical regression analyses. the predictors of loneliness among the rural elderly were identified as single/co-residence living arrangement(r=.49), sense of well-being based on respects for others' perspectives (r: -.22), needs for remarriage (r=.22), and work hours during off- farming season (r: -.19). The effects of living arrangement remained strong and were not influenced by the addition of sociodemographic variables, social activity variable, and social psychological variables. The feeling of loneliness of the elderly who were living alone was higher than among the elderly who were living with someone else. This finding suggests that the loneliness of the rural elderly derives primarily from the lack of family Interaction. Therefore, it is recommended that social welfare policies for the rural elderly be designed to improve their family and social interactions.

The significant variables associated with health behavior practice rates were gender, type of work, subjective health status and chronic diseases. • Korea is becoming an aged society as well developed country. Accident rates of elderly workers are increased. When elderly workers injured, elderly workers are more likely to die as a result, and they take longer to recover than young workers. Thus the cost to industry per individual accident gets higher for elderly workers. If information on the occupational accidents of elderly workers could be collected and analyzed for the purpose of preventing occupational accidents, we would be able to get rid of accidents of elderly workers. The accidents of elderly workers in small manufacturing factories were considered in this study. 97 accidents, which occurred in 1995-1998, were investigated. These accidents were analyzed in terms of sex, work period, cause of accident and form of accident. The accidents of elderly workers in small manufacturing factories are numerous and are often serious and worthy of greater attention than they have received. Successful strategies for accident prevention depend on effective analysis.
