ON TRANSLATION LENGTHS OF PSEUDO-ANOSOV MAPS ON THE CURVE GRAPH

  • We show that a pseudo-Anosov map constructed as a product of the large power of Dehn twists of two filling curves always has a geodesic axis on the curve graph of the surface. We also obtain estimates of the stable translation length of a pseudo-Anosov map, when two filling curves are replaced by multicurves. Three main applications of our theorem are the following: (a) determining which word realizes the minimal translation length on the curve graph within a specific class of words, (b) giving a new class of pseudo-Anosov maps optimizing the ratio of stable translation lengths on the curve graph to that on Teichmüller space, (c) giving a partial answer of how much power is needed for Dehn twists to generate right-angled Artin subgroup of the mapping class group.

  • Word sense disambiguation is one of the most important problems in natural language processing research topics such as information retrieval and machine translation. Many approaches can be employed to resolve word ambiguity with a reasonable degree of accuracy. These strategies are: knowledge-based, corpus-based, and hybrid-based. This paper pays attention to the corpus-based strategy. The purpose of this paper is to compare three famous machine learning techniques, Snow, SVM and Naive Bayes in Word-Sense Disambiguation on Thai language. 10 ambiguous words are selected to test with word and POS features. The results show that SVM algorithm gives the best results in solving of Thai WSD and the accuracy rate is approximately 83-96%.

  • In this study, we improve the performance of a speech recognition system of visual information depending on lip movements. This paper focuses on the robustness of the word recognition system with the rotation, transition and scaling of the lip images. The different methods of lipreading have been used to estimate the stability of recognition performance. Especially, we work out the special system of the log-polar mapping, which is called Mellin transform with quasi RTS-invariant and related approaches to machine vision. The results of word recognition are reported with HMM (Hidden Markov Model) recognition system.

  • In Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, phoneme-based pronunciation teaching such as tone, consonants, vowels is the most common teaching methods. Based on main character of Chinese grammar: 'lack of morphological change' in a narrow sense, was proposed by Lv Shuxiang and Zhu Dexi, I designed 'Communicative oriented Chinese pronunciation teaching method'. This teaching method is composed of seven elements: one kind is the 'structural elements': phoneme, word, phrase, sentence; another kind is the 'functional elements': listening, speaking and translation. This pronunciation teaching method has four kinds of practice methods: 1) phoneme learning method; 2) word based pronunciation practice; 3) phrase based pronunciation practice; 4) sentence based pronunciation practice. When the teachers use these practice methods, they can use the dialogue and Korean-Chinese translation. In particular, when the teachers use 'phoneme learning method', they must use Korean and Chinese phonetic comparison results. When the teachers try to correct learner's errors, they must first consider the speech communication.

A Design of Korean Generator for Japanese to Korean Translation System (일한 번역시스템을 위한 한국어 생성기 설계)

  • This paper proposes the Korean generator which is used in a Japanese to Korean translation system. The established Korean generator for japanese to Korean translation uses the entire sentence structure to generate Korean, or directly translates each morpheme. But in this paper, the generator generates Korean, based on a short clause. Japanese and Korean have similarities in short clauses, including the word order. But in the Korean generation, they also have many differences within short clauses. The analysed features in Japanese and Korean are in the wrong order. Therefore the Korean generator which takes it into consideration is needed. We propose a annotational algorithm for the Korean generation and apply it to the translation of postpositions, declinable words and auxiliary verbs. We also consider Korean phonological phenomenon that can't be extracted from the analyed Japanese informations. In the end, we can translate the Japanese conjugation that can't be easily dealt in the procedural method.

  • Mobile phones, which were used for simply calling and sending text messages, have recently moved to application-oriented digital devices such as smart phones and tablet phones. The rapid increase of smart and tablet phones which can offer advanced ability and run a variety of applications based on Java requires various digital multimedia content activities. These days, there are more than 2.2 billions of Christians around the world. Among them, more than 300 millions of people live in Asian, and all of them have and read the bible. If there is an application for the bible which translates from English to their own languages, it could be very helpful. With this reason, this paper proposes a multi-bible application that supports various languages. To do this, we implemented an algorithm that recognize sentences in the bible as word by word. The algorithm is essentially composed of the following three functions: tokenizing sentences in the bible into word by word (word tokenization), recognizing words by using touch event (word recognition), and translating the selected words to the desired language. Consequently, the proposed multi-bible application supports language translation efficiently by touching words of sentences in the bible.

  • In this paper, we present a speech translation system for hotel reservation, KT_STS(Korea Telecom Speech Translation System). KT-STS is a speech-to-speech translation system which translates a spoken utterance in Korean into one in Japanese. The system has been designed around the task of hotel reservation(dialogues between a Korean customer and a hotel reservation de나 in Japan). It consists of a Korean speech recognition system, a Korean-to-Japanese machine translation system and a korean speech synthesis system. The Korean speech recognition system is an HMM(Hidden Markov model)-based speaker-independent, continuous speech recognizer which can recognize about 300 word vocabularies. Bigram language model is used as a forward language model and dependency grammar is used for a backward language model. For machine translation, we use dependency grammar and direct transfer method. And Korean speech synthesizer uses the demiphones as a synthesis unit and the method of periodic waveform analysis and reallocation. KT-STS runs in nearly real time on the SPARC20 workstation with one TMS320C30 DSP board. We have achieved the word recognition rate of 94. 68% and the sentence recognition rate of 82.42% after the speech recognition tests. On Korean-to-Japanese translation tests, we achieved translation success rate of 100%. We had an international joint experiment in which our system was connected with another system developed by KDD in Japan using the leased line.

Context-Weighted Metrics for Example Matching (문맥가중치가 반영된 문장 유사 척도)

  • This paper proposes a metrics for example matching under the example-based machine translation for English-Korean machine translation. Our metrics served as similarity measure is based on edit-distance algorithm, and it is employed to retrieve the most similar example sentences to a given query. Basically it makes use of simple information such as lemma and part-of-speech information of typographically mismatched words. Edit-distance algorithm cannot fully reflect the context of matched word units. In other words, only if matched word units are ordered, it is considered that the contribution of full matching context to similarity is identical to that of partial matching context for the sequence of words in which mismatching word units are intervened. To overcome this drawback, we propose the context-weighting scheme that uses the contiguity information of matched word units to catch the full context. To change the edit-distance metrics representing dissimilarity to similarity metrics, to apply this context-weighted metrics to the example matching problem and also to rank by similarity, we normalize it. In addition, we generalize previous methods using some linguistic information to one representative system. In order to verify the correctness of the proposed context-weighted metrics, we carry out the experiment to compare it with generalized previous methods.

Korean Cultural Adaptation of Working Alliance Inventory and Its Reliability (한글판 치료협력 설문지 개발 및 신뢰도 분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of the study was to develop the Korean version of the Working Alliance Inventory (KWAI) and to assess reproducibility of both its therapist and client forms. Methods: The 12-item WAI was translated into Korean. The translation procedure followed the guidelines proposed by Beaton et al. (2000). Development of KWAI involved its translation, back-translation, and pilot testing of the pre-final version to establish Korean cultural adaptation of the original version of WAI. For test-retest reliability, therapists (N=30) and clients (N=47) completed the questionnaire on two different occasions. The interval between occasions was two to seven days, depending on subject availability. Data were collected from clinicians working in general hospitals and private clinics, and clients who had received treatment within three months. The intra-class correlation (ICC ($_{2.1}$)) was calculated for assessment of the reproducibility of the translated questionnaire. Results: The test-retest ICC ($_{2.1}$) of the client form and the therapist form was 0.92 (95%CI:0.86-0.95) and 0.94 (95%CI:0.89-0.97), respectively. Answers to items 2, 8, and 11 showed a tendency to be omitted due to ambiguity of meaning in Korean. Idiomatic expression was employed rather than word-to-word translation to have clear meaning of those items. Conclusion: The KWAI was successfully translated and adapted for applications to Korean clients and therapists, with a satisfactory level of reliability. Therefore, it can be suggested that the KWAI is useful in providing a reliable assessment of working alliance between therapists and clients.

The Construction of Korean-to-English Verb Dictionary for Phrase-to-Phrase Translations (구절 변환을 위한 한영 동사 사전 구성)

  • In the transfer machine translation, transfer dictionary decides the complexity of the transfer phase and the quality of translation according to the types and precision of informations supplied in the dictionary. Using the phrasal level translated informations within the human readable dictionary, human being translates a source sentence correctly and naturally. In this paper, we propose the verb transfer dictionary in which the various informations are constructed so the machine readable format that the Korean-to-English machine translation system can utilize them. In the proposed dictionary, we first provide the criterions by which an appropriate target verb is selected in phrase-to-phrase translations without an additional semantic analysis in transfer phase. Second, we provide the concrete sentence structure of a target verb so that we can resolve the expressive gaps between two languages and reduce the complexity of the various structure transfer in word-to-word translation.
