Formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from wood-based panels that have been made using wood particles, wood fiber, wood chips, formaldehyde-based resins and so on. In this study, we examined formaldehyde and total VOCs (TVOC) emission behaviors for plywood overlaid with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard (PL), and two kinds of surface materials (decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil) that were adhered onto the PL that named DPL and PPL. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) was used to overlay the decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil on the plywood with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard by a hot press instrument. The debonding test and accelerated aging test were conducted to assess their mechanical properties. Formaldehyde and TVOC emission concentrations were measured using the FLEC method and a VOC Analyzer, respectively. The debonding test results of PL, DPL and PPL were 1.2, 1.5, and $0.5N/mm^2$, respectively. The surface appearance of the samples were not changed after the accelerated aging test. The PL and DPL exhibited reduced formaldehyde and TVOC emission levels, respectively. In the case of PPL, the VOC value was relatively higher than those of PL and DPL.
The Main Hall of the Fengguo monastery in Yixian county, Liaoning province, China, is the best preserved and largest wooden Buddhist structure, typical of the Liao dynasty style, in China. However, some degradation to the timber frame of the Main Hall has been noted, and this is causing concern in terms of the long-term preservation of the structure. In this study, wooden pillars showing the degradation phenomena of whitening, for areas in contact with the stone floor, and extensive surface damage at higher locations(mostly above 1 m) have been examined. Samples taken from wooden pillar surfaces were analyzed using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), ion chromatography, and pH measurements. With respect to the whitening phenomenon, we found inorganic calcium precipitates and oxalate ions, along with higher pH values. These symptoms indicated that chemical changes were taking place in response to alkaline conditions, suggesting that alkaline mixtures with calcium content in the foundations may be responsible. Regarding the upper surface-damaged areas, no valid evidence for chemical degradation was found using FTIR analysis, while damaged areas exhibited the presence of more bat guano-related materials than which were apparent in undamaged areas. The occurrence of this surface-damaged phenomenon has therefore been attributed to physical damage caused by bat activity over long periods of time.
In this paper, it is aimed to present a comparative study about the structural behavior of tall buildings consisting of different type of materials such as concrete, steel or timber using finite element analyses and experimental measurements on shaking table. For this purpose, two 1/60 scaled 28 and 30-stories wooden building models with $40{\times}40cm$ and $35{\times}35cm$ ground/floor area and 1.45 m-1.55 m total height are built in laboratory condition. Considering the frequency range, mode shapes, maximum displacements and relative story drifts for structural models as well as acceleration, displacement and weight limits for shaking table, to obtain the typical building response as soon as possible, balsa is selected as a material property, and additional masses are bonded to some floors. Finite element models of the building models are constituted in SAP2000 program. According to the main purposes of earthquake resistant design, three different earthquake records are used to simulate the weak, medium and strong ground motions. The displacement and acceleration time-histories are obtained for all earthquake records at the top of building models. To validate the numerical results, shaking table tests are performed. The selected earthquake records are applied to first mode (lateral) direction, and the responses are recorded by sensitive accelerometers. Comparisons between the numerical and experimental results show that shaking table tests are enough to identify the structural response of wooden buildings. Considering 20%, 10% and 5% damping rations, differences are obtained within the range 4.03-26.16%, 3.91-65.51% and 6.31-66.49% for acceleration, velocity and displacements in Model-1, respectively. Also, these differences are obtained as 0.49-31.15%, 6.03-6.66% and 16.97-66.41% for Model-2, respectively. It is thought that these differences are caused by anisotropic structural characteristic of the material due to changes in directions parallel and perpendicular to fibers, and should be minimized using the model updating procedure.
The analysis of hazard compounds, including naphthalene, biphenyls (BP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP), was conducted from the wooden kitchenwares and sanitory produce. Fifty samples of that wooden products in the local market were purchased for the study. All the samples were extracted by benzene and n-heptane, followed by the analysis through GC-MSD. As a result, neither naphthalene nor diethyl phthalate were found, however, trace amount of biphenyls were detected on all the samples ranged from 0.1 to 3.1 ppm. Biphenyls also contained both in the imported and the domestic of White Birch wood, as 0.25 ppm and 0.34 ppm, respectively. The concentration of biphenyls reduced with the process of the original woods, and especially the detection range was relatively low compared with the permission one of apples (110 ppm). The results suggested that biphenyls were contaminated into the product not by the addition doting the process of manufacture, but as the component itself in raw wood materials. Also, the content of the residual biphenyls were not suspected to give the harmful effects.
The three-year inspection of 20 tree stumps in the fire prevention area around the wooden building confirmed that termite colonies had been rapidly spread. In particular, four buildings among thirty one wooden buildings of Songgwang-sa temple were infected by the termite, indicating that the habitate of termite has been spread across the fire prevention area over the temple area. However, a non-destructive microwave diagnosis showed that internal damages have been progressed until now, suggesting a high risk to the building. These results suggest that the fire prevention area should be properly maintained to have harmful element controlled. Therefore, effective methods are required to eliminate tree stumps or wood materials used to establish fire prevention area near wooden buildings.
This study was performed to study physical and mechanical properties of hybrid cross laminated timber (HCLT) with plywood as core layer in order to improve its mechanical properties for wooden housing. MOE, MOR, and dimensional stability of the HCLT were determined, depending on plywood composition and lamination direction. MOR value of the HCLT was improved as much as that of the glued laminated timber, which was 59.6% stronger than that of the cross laminated timber (CLT) control group. All MOE values of the HCLT were similar to glued laminated timber structure control group regardless of plywood composition and lamination directions. The dimensional stability of the HCLT was better than those of the glued laminated timber and CLT control group, owing to the use of plywood in the core.

This study used a building model made up of cement, brick, and wood to measure temperature and relative humidity for 3 days in a closed environment with a diameter of 900 mm, and performed a comparative analysis of the effect of types of building materials on the indoor temperature environment and heat transfer characteristics. The water installed inside the building model represented the person in the room and was used to assess how the environment effects the person. Wooden building model showed the lowest heat loss due to the higher thermal insulation properties than cement and brick buildings. The thermal comfort of each building model was calculated using temperature and relative humidity, and the wooden building model created a more pleasant environment than the cement and brick building models.
A foundry makes various machinery parts made by iron. For manufacturing machinery parts, they usually uses wooden mold with molding sand and pour the molten iron into wooden mold through inlet. A foundry have many processes including Furan process, In Furan process workers prepares a wooden mold in the molding sand. So they fixes wooden mold in sand housing and then they fill the molding sand in the sand housing. Molding sand should be sticky enough to sustain the shape of wooden mold, so several materials are needed to prepare the suitable molding sand. The first step of Furan process is making the molding sand with molding sand and Voltaic Organic Compounds (VOC) and the second step of Furan process is pour the molding sand into the wooden molding housing. This two step of process generated noxious VOC and various size of dust. So the process is very dirty and dangerous one. Because of these, Workers frequently shrink out of the plant. The company related with foundry usually faced on the difficult situation for engagement and always have shortage of hiring problem. Through this study, we developed a system which removes toxic VOC and dust simultaneously. We design and construct real system and install it at real plant. Before setting up this system, the working surroundings VOC (for formaldehyde) 15 ppm and Dust(for $PM_{10}$) $8,000{\mu}g/m^3$. After setting up this system, working surroundings is improved by VOC (for formaldehyde) 0 ppm, Dust(for $PM_{10}$) $4{\mu}g/m^3$, and the work evasion factor is removed. So we contribute to solve hiring problem of this company and increasing the productivity also.
In this study, the status of damage by subterranean termites and their management according to the region and type of domestic wooden cultural properties were identified. This was based on the survey reports of agencies conducting regular nationwide and regional monitoring of subterranean termites. In addition, using geographical information system (GIS) based on the survey contents, a map was constructed of termite infestation and its progress on 2,805 wooden cultural properties that were surveyed nationwide. Based on the map produced, a total of 486 cases of termite infestation were confirmed in wooden cultural properties during 2018-2019, of which 143 cases (approximately 29.4%) were confirmed to be owing to the invasion of termites in the ground and infestation of wood materials. A web platform and an application using a mapping application program interface were created to increase accessibility to the investigated damage status data. The methods employed by each institution for investigating and monitoring the invasion of termites in the ground included the use of detection dogs, visual observation, installation of wood specimens made of pine, and microwave equipment. However, it was confirmed that monitoring and survey methods were not applied to determine the territorial range of the subterranean termite colonies. Accordingly, the use of dyeing and mark-release-recapture methods were deemed necessary to understand the current status, such as calculating the scope of the target wooden cultural property, when monitoring subterranean termite colonies.
In the Chosun Dynasty, the wooden building materials for constructing the official buildings within a capital city were supplied by way of water transport, and they were stored at Hangang riverbanks. After being firstly treated with primary processed-goods there by several craftmen groups, they were carried in the relevant site of construction by cart. The purpose of this paper is to study the process of those supply, the roles of merchants and craftmen in the process.
