Recently, as people's interest in wood has increased, the use of wood as household and landscape decking materials has increased. As the deck material, imported wood such as synthetic wood, Ipe, and Malas was used in addition to the existing preserved wood, but recently deck use has been activated as part of the activation of domestic materials. As an important quality factor in the selection of such decking materials, various durability along with weatherability for long - term use is required for maintenance. Generally used tropical hardwoods have excellent weatherability and durability without additional preservative treatment. However, the domestic larch is a wood species with a higher specific gravity and durability than ordinary conifers. However, it has not yet been used as a deck material due to lack of comparative studies on its characteristics. Therefore, hardness and durability of wood were measured using six specimens of Ipe, Massaranduba, Malas, Douglas-fir, Larch and Torrefied-Larch. Density Profile was used to measure the density, and Brinell hardness test and resistance test against momentary impact were carried out for the test of resistance to static load. Also, The hardness and durability of wood were measured by castor test with resistance test against dynamic load, as well as, nail down test by experiment on surface hardness and durability. As a result of the experiment, the hardness was increased in proportion to the density, and it was confirmed that the imported lumber was harder and durable than the domestic larch.
In this study, MCQ (Micronized copper Quat) which was copper-based wood preservative, was investigated on decay properties by difference of the its infiltration volume. After pressure-treatment with different MCQ concentration, test specimens (Japanese Red Pine) were exposed by a brown-rot fungus (Fomitopsis palustris). At the end of the 12 weeks exposure to the fungus, untreated specimen was showed the mass loss of more than 35%, and the value of preservative effectiveness of MCQ by indoor decay was $3.99{\pm}0.42kg/m^3$. Therefore, MCQ should be pressure-injected at least $3.99kg/m^3$. The three dimensional of the specimens were observed by using the light microscope and scanning electron microscope, Untreated and treatment specimens with low concentration generally had underwent serious decays and had a lot of fungal hyphae. Howere, the formation of bore hole by hyphae were not observed. Mass loss and decay properties of specimens were affected by amount of MCQ injection. Therefore, it is necessary to the review of the adequacy of the MCQ injection amount in domestic environments.

In this study, the chemical components and termiticidal activities of bamboo vinegar against subterranean termite were evaluated. Bamboo vinegar used in this study were produced from Mayan (Gigantochloa robusta Kurz.), Balcoa (Bambusa balcooa Roxb.), and Taiwan (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro). It was analyzed by gravimetric methods. Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) was soaked for 24 h and tested against Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 7207-2014). The bamboo vinegar demonstrated antitermite activities against subterranean termite. Vinegar of 400℃ recorded higher total phenol and acid than that of 300℃. Results from this study suggest that the phenolic and acidic component of the bamboo vinegar contributed to 100% mortality rate of the termite, some wood weight loss, and a decrease in the termite feeding rate. These results strongly recommend that bamboo vinegar from D. latiflorus Munro is a potential environmentally friendly preservative.

This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of castor oil (CSO) as a natural wood preservative. CSO was treated into wood blocks prepared with domestic and imported wood species using a vacuum-pressure method, and then treatability, leachability and decay resistance of the CSO-treated wood blocks were examined. Although CSO was penetrated effectively into wood blocks of all wood species, the CSO-treatability was the highest in Western hemlock, followed by Japanese larch (LA), soft maple and Mongolian oak due to the difference of its anatomical structure. Except for LA, the more retained, the more leached during a saline water-immersing process for 48h. The use of ethanol added to reduce the viscosity of CSO affected negatively the treatability and leachability of wood blocks. Decay resistance, which was evaluated by the weight loss of wood blocks exposed against Fomitopsis palustris (FOP) and Trametes versicolor, of the CSO-treated/leached wood blocks was superior to that of control. Especially, most of wood blocks treated with preserving solution composed of only CSO (CSO-2) did not decayed and showed a very low weight loss against FOP. The decay resistance results from CSO retained in wood blocks after leaching. The retention of CSO could identify using the observation of X-ray microscope. Length of wood strips, which were treated with CSO-2 and then immersed in saline water for 2 weeks, hardly changed in all cutting directions. In addition, weight gain and length-swelling rate of the wood strips were extremely low compared to those of control. These results indicate that moisture resistance of the wood strips was improved by the CSO treatment. It is concluded that the treatment of CSO using a vacuum-pressure method provides the decay resistance and dimensional stability of wood, and thus CSO can be used as a natural wood preservative on various indoor and outdoor circumstances.
This study was conducted to evaluate the pressure treatment characteristics of Japanese red pine and Japanese larch skin timber with ACQ-2, CUAZ-2 and CuHDO-1. The effect of moisture content (MC) on preservative treatability was investigated for Japanese red pine sapwood and Japanese larch heartwood, and fixation characteristics of CCA alternatives was also evaluated. Japanese red pine sapwood, which was dried below 30 percent MC, was fully penetrated with preservatives, and minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved. Through measuring preservative retention gradient in Japanese red pine sapwood, it was confirmed that the retention gradient of CuHDO-1 was steeper than that of both ACQ-2 and CUAZ-2. In particular, it was intensified at a higher MCs of wood samples (25∼30%). Japanese larch heartwood did not meet the minimum requirement of penetration and retention for the hazard class H3 over the range of pretreatment MCs tested. With presteaming under $121^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours, the treatability of Japanese larch heartwood was enhanced to meet the minimum requirement for the hazard class H3. The fixation rate of copper was much more faster under drying condition compared with nondrying condition; more than 95% of copper were fixed in 3~6 days and 1 day under drying conditions in Japanese red pine sapwood and Japanese larch heartwood, respectively. After 3-week fixation period at ambient temperature, the amount of mobile copper in treated wood sample that remains available for leaching from treated wood was the highest in the wood samples treated with ACQ-2, followed by CuHDO-1 and CUAZ-2. It was proportional to the amount of copper in treating solution.
Heavy metals were removed from CCA- and CCFZ- treated wood using a brown-rot fungi Tyromyces palustris. The amount of effective elements extracted from treated woods was compared for different treatment methods. The relationship between the amount of heavy metals removed and concentrations of oxalic acid for treated wood was examined. Also, the relationship between mycelia weight and removal rate was examined. The removed quantity of heavy metal from treated wood according to fermentation methods was examined. The extraction amount of chromium and arsenic components increased with increasing oxalic acid concentration, but the extraction amount of copper did not improved much. A 287 mg of mycelia weight can remove chromium and arsenic over 60% in 3 g CCA chips and copper was also removed over 50%. The chromium, copper and arsenic were removed over 60% by shaking fermentation, the removal rate of copper by static cultivation was higher than that of shaking fermentation. The removal rate of chromium, copper and arsenic were 72%, 61% and 59% with air-lift bioreactor, respectively.
This study was conducted to evaluate the pressure treatment characteristics of yellow poplar skin timber with ACQ-2, CUAZ-3, and CuHDO-1. The effect of moisture content (MC) on treatability was investigated, and fixation characteristics of copper-based preservatives were also evaluated. Sapwood of yellow poplar, which was dried below 50 percent MC, was fully penetrated with preservatives, and minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved. Through measuring retention gradient in yellow poplar sapwood, it was confirmed that minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved in the assay zone from the surface to 15 mm-depth when the specimens were dried below 30 percent MC. Yellow poplar heartwood did not meet the minimum requirement of penetration and retention for the hazard class H3 over the range of pretreatment MCs tested. The fixation rate of copper was much faster under drying condition compared with nondrying condition; more than 90% of copper were fixed in 3 weeks at $21^{\circ}C$ under drying conditions.
Antifungal and antibacterial activities of wood vinegars were investigated in this study in order to apply for the natural fungicides and food preservatives. The antifungal activities of wood vinegars were measured as a hyphal growth inhibition rate using four plant pathogenic, four wood rot and one mushroom pathogenic fungi. Inhibition effect on the fungi growth was explicitly observed at the concentrations higher than 0.5% of unrefined wood vinegar and higher than 1.0% of refined wood vinegar, respectively, suggesting that unrefined wood vinegars showed the higher antifungal activities than that of refined wood vinegars. The highest inhibition effect on the fungi growth was shown in Libertella betulina which is a mushroom pathogenic fungus. In addition, the wood vinegars from Pinus densiflora showed the higher antifungal activities against the plant pathogenic and wood rot fungi than that from Quercus spp.. On the other hand, the antibacterial activities of wood vinegars were determined by a paper disc method using the three gram positive and five gram negative bacteria. The unrefined wood vinegars showed a prominent effect on the suppression of bacteria growth at the concentration of 10%, while the suppression of bacteria growth was not observed in the refined wood vinegars. These results also suggest that the unrefined wood vinegars showed the higher antibacterial activities than the refined wood vinegars. The antibacterial activities of wood vinegars against gram positive bacteria were higher than those of wood vinegars against gram negative bacteria. From these results, it can be inferred that the wood vinegars has the strong antimicrobial activities and can be applied as the natural fungicides and food preservatives.
Water repellent preservative (WRP) treated and untreated, small-sized specimens prepared from semiwater resistant, water resistant, and tegofilm-overlaid plywood were exposed to outdoor weathering for one year. Exterior durability of specimens was evaluated on the basis of changes in dynamic modulus of elasticity, degree of delamination, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, and glueline shear strength. Among untreated specimens, tegofilm-overlaid plywood showed the best outdoor durability, and durability between semiwater resistant and water resistant plywood was similar. Although WRP treatment increased the durability of all types of plywoods, the effect of treatment on the increase in durability for semi water resistant plywood was not distinct. Accordingly, it can be concluded that semi water resistant plywood, which is used for temporary construction such as concrete formwork in our country, can not be inadequate for exterior use, regardless of WRP treatment. The bending strength and glueline shear strength of untreated water resistant plywood measured after weathering for one year did not exceed the minimum value specified by Korean Standard (KS), thereby the outdoor use of water resistant plywood was not desirable without WRP treatment. Exterior durability between treated water resistant plywood and untreated tegofilm-overlaid plywood was very similar. This result suggests that if an exposed plywood surface is treated with WRP regularly water resistant plywood can be used for temporary construction. This suggestion, however, needs to be investigated. In summary, semiwater resistant plywood cannot be used for temporay construction regardless of WRP treatment. Water resistant plywood can be used only with WRP treatment. Comparing the cost of tegofilm-overlaid plywood to costs of water resistant plywood and WRP treatment, however, it can be concluded that use of tegofilm-overlaid plywood for temporay constrution is strongly suggested from the point of view of both outdoor durability and costs.
Antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of heartwood extractives of domestic species were investigated to develop a natural fungicide or preservative. Four lignan derivatives and one taxane were isolated from heartwood of Taxus cuspidata which has been selected due to its high antioxidative activity among the tested species. The chemical structures were identified as : taxusin, isolariciresinol (4, 4', 9, 9'-tetrahydroxy-3', 5-dimethoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan), lariciresinol (4, 4', 9-trihydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan), taxiresinol (3, 4, 4', 9-tetrahydroxy-3'-methoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan) and isotaxiresinol (3', 4, 4', 9, 9'-pentahydroxy- 5-methoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan) on the basis of spectroscopic data and their chemical correlations. According to the results of free radical scavenging activity, isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol showed higher radical scavenging activity than those of 𝛼-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), the strongest natural and synthetic antioxidants. However, taxusin did not show any free radical scavenging activity. In this regard, it could inferred that high antioxidative activity of extractives of T. cuspidata was derived from isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol.
