This work was conducted to investigate the effect of the addition of binders, such as rapeseed flour, coffee waste, bark, pine cone and lignin powder, on the fuel characteristics of the pellets fabricated with larch and tulip tree sawdust. Moisture content, bulk density and higher heating value of most pellets fabricated with the binders exceeded the 1st-grade pellet standard designated by Korea Forest Research Institute, but ash content of the pellets fabricated with rapeseed flour or bark of 10 wt% on the dry weight basis of sawdust was satisfied with just the 2nd- or 3rd-grade standard. The durability of tulip tree-pellets was positively influenced by the addition of rapeseed flour, coffee waste or lignin powder and increased with increasing the amount of the binders. For larch-pellets, the increase of binders did not greatly affect the durability, and even the durability reduced with the increase of bark or pine cone. From the microscopic observation, the obvious feature of pellet surfaces was not identified by the type of binder but by the addition amount of the binder. In summary, the addition of binders contributed to the fuel characteristics of wood pellets, and particularly the characteristics of wood pellets fabricated with coffee waste improved greatly. Therefore, if the binders are secured sufficiently with a reasonable cost, it might be possible to commercialize wood/binder pellets, which have better fuel characteristics than conventional wood pellets.

A three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristic of wood-flour-filled polypropylene melt in an extrusion die was carried out. Used for this analysis were Finite Concept Method based on FVM, unstructured grid and non-Newtonian fluid viscosity model. Temperature and flow fields are closely coupled through temperature dependent viscosity and viscous dissipation. With large Peclet, Nahme, Brinkman numbers, viscous heating caused high temperature belt near die housing. Changing taper plate thickness and examining some predefined parameters at die exit investigated the effect of taper plate on velocity and temperature uniformities. In the presence of taper plate, uniformity at die exit could be improved and there existed an optimum thickness to maximize it.
This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using pellet-type Zeolite-StarFish ceramics (ZSF ceramics), in which natural zeolite and starfish were mixed and calcined with wood flour. Kinetic experiment showed the removal reaction of heavy metals by ZSF ceramics reached the equilibrium status within 3 hours. The optimal calcination temperature range for removal of heavy metals was measured to be $800{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$. The calcination time had little effect on the removal of heavy metal in AMD. The adequate dose of ceramics was shown to be 1.0~1.2 % for removal of heavy metals in AMD. High removal efficiencies of heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in AMD, more than 95 % except for Pb, were obtained under the condition of dose of ceramics more than 1.0 %. The removal efficiencies of heavy metals increased with increasing mixing concentration of wood flour. The adequate mixing concentration of wood flour was observed to be 10 %. The batch experimental results exhibited that the ZSF ceramics could act as an efficient ceramics for removal of heavy metals in AMD and the wood flour could provide porous ZSF ceramics with enhanced removal efficiency of heavy metals.

The main objective of this research was conducted to evaluate the impacts on the thermoplastic polymer which is a matrix polymer and the rice husk flour (RHF) which is a reinforcing filler relative to the manufacturing temperature and time when bio-composites were manufactured. In order to evaluate the impacts on the rice husk flour relative to the manufacturing temperature, the rice husk flour was persevered for 10 minutes to 2 hours period at $220^{\circ}C$ temperature which was then added with the polypropylene (PP) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to complete the manufacturing process of the bio-composites and measure the corresponding mechanical properties. As preserving time increased at $220^{\circ}C$, the tensile and impact strength were decreased due to the thermal degradation of the main components within the rice husk flour. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to measure weight loss caused by the actual manufacturing temperature and the result was that the thermoplastic polymer had not scarcely occurred weight change, but there had been increasing rate of weight loss relative to time for the rice husk flour and the bio-composites under the consistent temperature of $220^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour time period. Therefore, the proper manufacturing temperature and time settings are significantly important features in order to prevent the reduction of mechanical properties which were induced throughout the manufacturing process under the high manufacturing temperature.
With the emergence of abnormal climate due to the rapid industrialization, the importance of water quality management and management costs are increasing every year. In Korea, for the management of total phosphorus and total nitrogen, the major materials causing the water quality pollution, coagulants are injected in sewage treatment plants to process organic compounds. However, if the coagulant is injected in an excessive amount to PAC (Poly Aluminium Chloride), a secondary pollution problem might occur. As such, a study on the applicability of natural material-based coagulant is being conducted in Korea. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the applicability of a mixed coagulant developed by analyzing water quality pollutants T-P, T-N as well as their turbidity, in order to derive the optimum mixing ratio between PAC and torrefied wood flour for the primary settling pond effluent. Under the condition where the content of PAC (10%) and torrefied wood flour is 1%, T-P showed the maximum removal efficiency of 92%, and T-N showed approximately 22%. This indicates that removal of T-N which includes numerous positively charged organic compounds that are equivalent to mixed coagulant is not well accomplished. Turbidity showed the removal efficiency of approximately 91%. As such, 1% of torrefied wood flour was determined to be the optimum addition. As a result of analyzing the removal efficiency for organic compounds by reducing PAC concentration to 7%, T-P showed a high maximum removal efficiency of 91%, T-N showed 32%, and turbidity showed the maximum of 90%. In addition, a coagulation process is performed by using the mixed coagulant based on 1% content of torrefied wood flour produced in this study by performing a coagulation performance comparative experiment with PAC (10%). As a result, PAC concentration was reduced to 30-50%, a similar performance with other coagulants in market was secured, PAC injection amount was reduced that an economic effect can be achieved, and it is considered to perform a stable water treatment that reduces the secondary pollution problem.
Modification of polylactic acid (PLA) and 10% maleic anhydride (MAH) with 15% dicumyl peroxide (DCP) based on MAH weight was conducted in the kneader at $160^{\circ}C$ and 30~70 rpm, for 15 min. The resulting MAH-modified PLA (PLA-MA) was then evaluated as a compatibilizer for PLA-wood flour (WF) composites. The FTIR and $^1H$-NMR analysis gave evidence of PLA-MA formation. After kneading and reacting with MAH and DCP, the number (Mn) and the weight average (Mw) molecular weights of PLA decreased as compared to the original PLA. The presence of WF in the composites decreased the tensile strength and several other physical properties. The higher the WF loading resulted in the greater the reduction of tensile strength. An addition of 10% PLA-MA as a compatibilizer to the composites improved the tensile strength and several other physical properties, increased the flow temperature, and decreased the melt viscosity. The improved composite revealed 1.42 times increased in tensile strength but not over PLA alone, and absorbed considerably less water compared to those of the composites free-compatibilizer.
Wood filler is a porous and anisotropic material having different size, shape, and aspect ratio. The use of wood fillers such as wood particle, wood flour, and wood pulp in wood plastic composites (WPCs) are growing rapidly because these wood fillers give improved strength and stiffness to WPCs. However, the wood fillers have originally poor compatibility with plastic matrix affecting the mechanical properties of WPCs. Therefore, to improve compatibility between wood and plastic, numbers of physical and chemical treatments were investigated. While the various treatments led to improved performances in WPC industries using petroleum-based plastics, full biodegradation is still issues due to increased environmental concerns. Hence, bio-based plastics such as polylactide and polyhydroxybutyrate having biodegradable characteristics are being applied to WPCs, but relatively expensive prices of existing bio-based plastics prevent further uses. As conventional processing methods, extrusion, injection, and compression moldings have been used in WPC industries, but to apply WPCs to engineered or structural places, new processing methods should be developed. As one system, co-extrusion technique was introduced to WPCs and the co-extruded WPCs having core-shell structures make the extended applications of WPCs possible.
The origin as well as the culinary aspects such as ingredients, types, preparation methods of Dasik and materials and ornamental patterns of Dasik mould(다식판) are discussed and analyzed through the literature survey. 1. The origin of Dasik came from the custom of Umdha(飮茶) together with the Worship of Buddhism(숭불정책) and the abundant production of rice due to the Policy for Agricultural Development(권농정책) of the Koryo Dynasty. 2. The main ingredient of Dasik was rice flour and wheat flour and thereafter, plant materials such as Song-wha(송화), Mungbean starch flour(녹두녹말가루) and Hwang-yul(황율) were followed. Honey, sugar and syrup were used as coagulating agents. Dasik was often colored by the addition of Omija(오미자), a plant material containing red pigment. 3. Originally. Dasik mould was not used until Jeungbo-Sanlim-Kyungje. Major types of Dasik were reviewed from the literature survey. 4. The materials of Dasik mould were wood or porcelain. Their shapes and ornamental patterns were reviewed. Circular design was predominant in the wood and lettered designs were predominant in porcelain. 5. Utilization of Dasik recorded in Koryo-History(고려사) and Chosun-Wangjo Shilloc(조선왕조실록) were reviewed.
Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.

Due to global warming and abnormal climate, the incidence and scale of green tracts in rivers and water intake dam are increasing every year. Therefore, in this study, developed eco friendly positively charged Torrefied Wood Flour(TWF) coagulant by reusing wood damaged by blight as a natural material. In order to evaluate the effect of coagulant on water ecosystem, green algae contaminated water was collected and TOC showed high removal rate of 86% ~ 92% under 1% and 5% TWF C-PAM treatment condition. The $NH_3-N$ showed 53% removal efficiency. The average pH of the polluted water was 7.9 in the case of hydrogen ion concentration, and the pH of the treated water was in the range of 6.5 ~ 7.7, It was found to be suitable for water quality standards. In ecotoxicity tests, all the results of the experiment showed that both the number of green algae and that of treated water were not affected by the survival of the daphnia. Therefore, as a result of the analyzing, developed paste type TWF coagulants is considered to be able to remove algae using natural resources.
