This study evaluated the ability of white and brown rot fungi to decompose fire retardant-treated wood by measuring mass loss. Anti efficacy of FRT against sapstain and mold fungi was evaluated. Wood was treated with liquid sodium silicate and boric acid, ammonium borate, di-ammonium phosphate. Retardant treated wood was then subjected to fungal decay resistance tests performed according to KS standard method using a brown-rot fungus, Fomitopsis palustris and white rot fungus Trametes versicolor. Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum, Rhizopus nigricans, Aureobasidium pullulans, Tricoderma virede fungi were used anti-sapstain and mold test. Boron and phosphorus chemicals used in this study increased the resistance of fire retardant treated wood against both fungal attack. Anti mold and sapstain efficacy of the fire retardant treated wood was excellent but there were difference depend on mold. After the liquid sodium silicate treatment, the second chemical treatment process could lead chemical fixation into wood, which effects decay resistance.
Anatomical and physical characteristics of damaged wood by forest fire and sound wood of Pinus densiflora were examined. Granular substances were found in resin canals, epithelial cells and ray parenchyma cells of damaged wood, but the other distinctive marks of wood structure in damaged wood were not observed. Damaged wood showed slightly higher relative crystallinity in outermost growth ring than sound wood. Green moisture content and water absorptions both in tangential and radial sections of damaged wood were lower than those of sound wood. There were no significant differences in shrinkage, swelling and basic density between damaged and sound woods.
The productivity and demand of porous material has been increasing by development of industry and increasing income. In particular, the fire caused by using wood flour risks wood processing industry and stock farm. The heat transfer of wood flour is carried into the depth direction by effect of oxidizer around flame, flame sometimes is progressed as smoldering. In the case of progressing as combustion fire, identifying the location of fire is difficult, and it leads to failing fire aid fire fighting. Therefore potential cause is acted as raising additional damage. This paper conducts experiments of downward deep seated fire of natural convection conditions. The samples is New Zealand wood flour that is demanded much in the domestic and oversea market. In this experiment, temperature of deep seated side is measure by changing wood flour density in holder The densities used in experiment are 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%. As a result, the tendency of temperature inside decreases as wood flour density increases. But, in the case of density which is above $0.2140g/cm^3$, the phenomenon, decreasing temperature, is not shown. The result of measurement show that average flame spread speed of wood flour is 0.249 mm/min.

In this work wood crib burning behaviors have been simulated by using the FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) program. Wood cribs are regularly stacked arrays of wood sticks, and available for the performance rating of fire-extinguishers. On the basis of an angle iron supporter 26 layers of wood sticks have been stacked up. Each layer consists of 5 or 6 wood sticks which are placed in parallel, with a constant distance, and in alternating rows. They are laid between the horizontally adjacent sticks at the before last layer. The wood crib is ignited instantaneously by an amount of burning gasoline below. A comprehensive simulation of such a practical sophisticated combustion is still too difficult to realize with any currently available computer, although the performance of modern processors is getting better everyday. We could carry it out here through parallel computing on the HPC(High Performance Computing) cluster as the feasible alternative. At last the validation has been executed by means of temperature distribution data measured by the thermal video camera.
Anatomical and physical characteristics of Pinus densiflora woods damaged by forest fire at Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do were investigated in present study. Even though the bark was severly carbonized, no trace of carbonization in the xylem was found. The amount of resin exudation was different by the degree of fire damage. Green moisture content of sapwood in the damaged wood was lower than that in the sound wood, but vice versa in the heartwood. Green density of heartwood in the damaged wood was higher than that in the sound wood, but there was no significant difference in sapwood. Cambial activities were found stopped in the severely damaged wood but were identified in the lightly damaged wood. In safranine staining process, epithelial and ray parenchyma cell walls in the damaged woods showed darker hue than those in the sound wood. Granular substances were observed in the lumina of ray parenchyma and epithelial cells of the severely damaged wood. Relative crystallinity of the outermost growth ring in the severely damaged wood was slightly higher than that in the sound wood.

This study was carried out to evaluate the weight loss rates, carbon and nitrogen dynamics of wood stakes following soil amendment treatments (CLB: compound fertilizer + lime + biochar; LB: lime + biochar) in a post-fire restoration area, Ulsan Metropolitan city, southern Korea. Soil amendments in the fire-disturbed area were applied to two-times (Mar. and Jun. 2015, 2016) during the study period. Wood stakes on Mar. 2015 were buried at a top 15cm of mineral soil in two soil amendment and control treatments of Liriodendron tulipifera, Prunus yedoensis, Quercus acutissima, Pinus thunbergii plantations and an unplanted area in the post-fire restoration area. Wood stakes were collected at Oct. 2015, Mar. 2016 and Oct. 2016 to measure weight loss rates, organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations. Weight loss rates of wood stakes were not significantly affected by soil amendment treatments. However, remaining carbon of wood stakes were lowest in the control treatment (43.7%), followed by the CLB (71.3%) and the LB (71.6%) treatments. Remaining nitrogen of wood stakes was less in the control treatment (29.7%) compared with the LB treatment (52.6%). The results indicate that carbon and nitrogen mineralization of wood stakes in post-fire restoration area were delayed by soil amendment treatments.
The earlier studies on the fire resistance performance of woods used as building materials have focused on confirming combustion characteristics of fire retardant or flame resistant treated wood. In this paper, to confirm internal temperature changes closely related to pyrolysis of woods exposed to the flame, heating experiments were conducted in a heating furnace according to the standard heating temperature curves after Douglas-fir, which is widely used as structural materials, was treated with a flame resistant solution and flame retardant paint. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the thermal diffusion inside the wood has decreased when the wood was treated with the flame resistant solution. However, in high temperature, the flame resistant effect could not be expected due to the peeling of the coating in the case of the flame resistant paint treated wood. Therefore, it can be considered that it is more effective to use the flame resistant solution which penetrates in to the inside of the wood than flame resistant paint which forms the coating on the surface of the wood in order to enhance the flame resistance effect on the thick wood.
We tested the char characteristics of fire retardant treated Douglas fir at each of five constant external irradiance levels $(10,\;15,\;20,\;25\;및\;35kW/m^2)$. A Cone heater was used to expose the wood specimens to the heat flux. The size of specimens is 100- by 100- by 50-mm and the kinds of specimens are non-treated wood(N) and treated wood(F2 and f4) by water soluble fire retardants. The water-soluble fire retardants were made from mixture of aqueous solutions of monoammonium phosphate, sodium borate and zinc borate, and those are used for immersion of Douglas fir. In result of test, char fraction of fire retardant treated Douglas fir showed a considerably low char fraction than it of non-treated wood irrespective of increase of external heat flux. And char fractions has low levels with increase of fire retardant content. Burning rate of non-treated wood(N) was showed a relatively high burning rate than it of fire retardant treated wood(F2 and F4). And difference of burning rate shown more rapidly in high external irradiance than low external irradiance. When the external heat flux is $35kW/m^2$, average char rate of non-treated wood is rapidly about twice than fire retardant treated wood. Water-soluble fire retardants mixed in this study find out it has fire suppression and adiabatic effect by char layer from results of char fraction, burning rate, and char depth and rate.
Research to discuss the fire performance of materials requires tools for measuring their burning characteristics and validated fire growth models to predict fire behavior of the materials under specific tire scenarios using the measured properties as input for the models. In this study, burning characteristics such as time to ignition, weight loss rate, flame spread, heat release rate, total heat evolved, and effective heat of combustion for four types of wood-based materials were evaluated using the cone calorimeter and inclined panel tests. Time to ignition was affected by not only surface condition and specific gravity of the tested materials but also the type and magnitude of heat source. Results of weight loss rate, measured by inclined panel tests, indicated that heat transfer from the contacted flame used as the heat source into the inner part of the specimen was inversely proportional to specific gravity of material. Flame spread was closely related with ignition time at the near part of burning zone. Under constant and severe external heat flux, there was little difference in weight loss rate and total heat evolved between four types of wood-based panels. More applied heat flux caused by longer ignition time induced a higher first peak value of heat release rate. Burning characteristics data measured in this study can be used effectively as input for fire growth models to predict the fire behavior of materials under specific fire scenarios.
The Mechanical and drying characteristics of Pinus densiflora wood, which was damaged by forest fire, and sound wood were examined. There were no significant differences in axial compressive properties, shearing strength and impact bending absorbed energy between damaged and sound woods. But the bending properties of damaged wood were slightly higher than those of sound wood. The green moisture content of sapwood in damaged wood was lower than that in sound wood, but oven-drying rate was similar in both woods. Number of initial check in damaged wood was smaller than that in sound wood, and inner check in damaged and sound woods was not observed. Consequently, it is considered that mostly damaged wood by forest fire can be used for wood material after removing the bark.
