  • In this study we experimented setting time and basic properties as waste wood fiber and sodium silicate substitution rate to reuse waste wood fiber produced in construction field to wood chip board. To do this construction waste woods were crushed with the size less than 10mm, mixed with the rate of 1:2, 2.5, 3, and added sodium silicate with the rate of 0, 5% of cement content. The results are as follows. As the substitution rate of construction waste wood was increased delay of setting time was also increased, and the batch of adding 5% accelerator had a 13~17 hours faster setting time than non accelerator batch. The compressive strength was lower as wood substitution rate was higher, and as the specific gravity was higher, the strength was also higher. As wood substitution rate was higher, heat conductivity was lower, and as specific gravity was higher, heat conductivity also was higher.

  • Environmental conservation has become one of the greatest concerns of all the people in the world. This issue is related to wood utilization in two major view points such as carbon dioxide emitted by the use of manufacturing energy and absorbed during the growth of trees. Wood construction materials require less manufacturing energy, which, in turn, means less carbon dioxide emission. In addition, wood keeps absorbed carbon in itself as far as it is not burnt. Therefore, wood is environmentally superior to other materials in terms of potential effects on atmospheric carbon dioxide. As examples of the environmental effect of wood utilization, the following two results were obtained: 1) If wood construction becomes popular in Korea as in Japan, more than 24% of carbon dioxide emission during construction of residential housings can be reduced: and 2) If aluminum windows are substituted by wood windows, more than 19% of carbon dioxide emission can be reduced. If the principle of "cut and plant" is kept well, wood is the best construction material for environmental protection as well as human residence.

  • To investigate opportunities for wood frame housing and to activate wood frame house construction, trends of construction activities. preference about housing, and building codes related to wood frame housing were discussed. And two models of wood frame house were developed and construction cost was analyzed to compare with comparative masonry houses. The results obtained were as follows: 1. While 77.8% of people prefer single-family houses, majority of people(74.9%), ironically, possess multi-family houses such as apartments Wood work cost was ratio of 4% of total building cost. while wood material cost accounted merely for 11 % out of total building material cost. 2. Building code was not major barrier to residential house at height under 13m. The building code regulated major structural member and family boder wall of multi-family house to be built with fire retardant material. 3. The proper wood frame house was analyzed of town house or villa type locating in suburban of big city with hot ondol system for the upper middle class. 4 There was no difference in construction cost between western style wood frame house and comparable masonry house, but construction cost for Korean style wood frame house is 27% higher than that of comparable masonry house. It was necessary to reduce materials and cost down by prefabrication technique for both style of wood frame house.

  • This study aims to show the growing popularity in the use of wood in new residential construction and improvements to existing housing throughout Asia. Residents want wood in their house and we also have the problem to reduce carbon dioxide which we can solve by using wood. If well implemented in construction, we can expect Kyoto protocol reduce the average global temperature by 0.02$^{\circ}$C or even up to 0.28$^{\circ}$C by the year 2050. A survey of Korean and Japanese people was conducted targeting unique preferences that may exist between these two Nations. Initial findings showed that residents preferred wood in their homes and reductions in carbon dioxide was also a factor. It is important for architects and those interested in using wood to understand that there are many advantages to using wood materials for construction. From this point of view using wood to can produce appreciable effects such as cutting house maintenance costs, creating a natural home design, and building in a manner that is friendlier on the environment.

  • Recently, it changes to the frame construction in the wall type structure for the life span improvement of the apartment house of our country. The execution of the light panel increased while the execution of the frame construction increased. Therefore, the density and absorption ratio of the magnesium oxide matrix according to the wood flour amount of addition ratio property try to be analyze for the lightweight of the surface material of the light panel. The test result, the density has been declined as the addition ratio increase of the wood flour. In the case of the water absorption ratio, water absorption ratio has been increased as addition ratio increase of wood flour. However, wood flour addition ratio 15% determined the most appropriate when considering the density and water absorption ratio.

  • Today's human life is more conveniently advantaged and abundant as industrial society advanced. However, the development has been creating a serious environmental crisis. Environmental pollution and exhaustion of natural resources recently became an important issue in construction industry as well as the concern about construction waste management and recycling the resources has arisen. Because the industrial wastes are not only increased quantitatively but also qualitatively intricate and various, groping for ways of reducing the use of resources primarily and recycling is urged on promotion. Currently, only about 33% of the wood wastes produced in construction site are recycled and the others are incinerated or disposed through irregular circulation process. In this study, I will investigate the present status of generating, processing, and recycling construction wood wastes and compare domestic disposal trend to other countries. In addition, I will analyze the actual condition of processing wood wastes in the construction site, verify the irrational causes, and simplify anomalous factors for the purpose of more efficient and correct activation of wood waste treatment and recycling on construction field and protection of environment in the long run.

  • This study focuses on the construction of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the second year of King Gojong's reign, which has been spotlighted for political and economic history. The author analyzed the contents of wood procurement with the Yeonggeon Diary, which records each day of construction site. The results are as follows: First, the 2nd year of King Gojong's reign, Yeonggeon of Gyeongbokgung Palace, was a new building that reflected the old system and 270 years of changed environment on the existing site. Despite the poor economic conditions, it began with years of effort and voluntary volunteer work and dedication. Second, the priority of timber transport was recruiting people in the whole process and the supply and demand of transportation tools. Carrying lumber from the mountains to the riverside and floating it at the right time were all a matter of manpower. Soldiers and carts were used to carry timber that arrived in Hangang River to the construction site. The cart was a consumable product, so it was necessary to continuously use the wood to make cart at the site. Third, fire and flood were the biggest obstacles to the Yeonggeon schedule of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Especially the fire was fatal. It was difficult to extinguish the fire in temporary structure, where was the storage for wood to construct. These disasters greatly affected the construction cost and construction period. Wood procurements of Gyeongbokgung Palace were based on public offerings. At the same time, recycled materials from other palace wood and nearby houses, nationwide buying of private mountain wood, the logging of royal tombs and some of the buildings of Gyeonghui Palace and Changgyeong Palace were relocated.

  • In light-frame wood construction, missing roof-sheathing fasteners can be a relatively common occurrence. This type of construction makes up the vast majority of the residential building stock in North America and thus their performance in high winds, including hurricanes, is of concern due to their sheer number. Construction quality issues are common in these types of structures primarily because the majority are conventionally constructed and unlike steel and reinforced concrete structures, inspection is minimal except in certain areas of the country. The concept of performance-based wind engineering (PBWE), a relatively new paradigm, relies on the assumption that building performance under wind loads can be accurately modeled. However, the discrepancy between what is designed (and modeled) and what is built (the as-built) may make application of PBWE to light-frame wood buildings quite difficult. It can be concluded from this study that construction quality must be controlled for realistic application of PBWE to light-frame wood buildings.
