Wooden structures are widely used, particularly in earthquake zones, owing to their light weight, ease of application, and resistance to the external environment. In this study, we aimed to improve the mechanical properties of laminated timber beams using novel hybrid systems [carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and wire rope]. Within the scope of this study, it is expected that using wood, which is an environmentally friendly and sustainable building element, will be more economical and safe than the reinforced concrete and steel elements currently used to pass through wide openings. The structural behavior of the hybrid-reinforced laminated timber beams was determined under the loading system. The experimental findings showed that the highest increase in the values of laminated beams reinforced with steel ropes was obtained with the 2N reinforcement, with a maximum load of 38 kN and a displacement of 137 mm. Thus, a load increase of 168% and displacement increase of 275% compared with the reference sample were obtained. Compared with the reference sample, a load increase of 92% and a displacement increase of 14% were obtained. Carbon fabrics placed between the layers with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) prevented crack development and provided significant interlayer connections. Consequently, the fabrics placed between the laminated wooden beams with the innovative reinforcement system will not disrupt the aesthetics or reduce the effect of earthquake forces, and significant reductions can be achieved in these sections.
This study discusses the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material of medium-density fiberboard (MDF). In this relation, the effect of coffee bean residue known as an absorbent material on the physical and mechanical properties of MDF manufactured at its different addition level. Coffee bean residue which is a by-product of coffee mill and large amount of waste left over after processing for instant coffee was added at the level of 3, 6, and 9% on dry basis and urea formaldehyde resin was used as the adhesive. The MDF made with mixture of wood fiber and coffee bean residue was tested for physical and mechanical properties as well as formaldehyde emission. The bending strength and internal bonding strength of the MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue were higher than that of the KS standard in randomized mat structure type, but not in layered mat structure type. Also, the physical properties of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue showed a considerable improvement in thickness swelling over the commercial MDF. More importantly, the formaldehyde emission rate of MDF made with mixture of wood fiber-coffee bean residue met the KS standard and was close to that of commercial MDF. These results showed the feasibility of coffee bean residue as a raw material for the production of environmentally-friendly MDF. Additional works on adhesive-coffee bean compatibility, improvement of moisture absorption effect and reduction the formaldehyde emission rate by carbonization of coffee bean residue may be required.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides, diffuse-porous wood Anthocephalus cadamba and ring-porouswood Fraxinus rhynchophylla. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction, tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest among all cells considered in Anthocephalus cadamba and Fraxinus rhynchophylla In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest depth and the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Larix kaempferi (Lamb.)Carriere, diffuse-porous wood Betula davurica Pall.. and ring-porouswood Castanea crenata S.etZ. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Larix kaempferi was found the highest among all cells considered in Betula davurica and Castanea crenata, In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Larix kaempferi was found the highest depth and the one of Betula davurica was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Castanea crenata. The large vessel of Castanea crenata was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Betula davurica higher than the one of Castanea crenata.
This study was carried out to investigate the sheet properties of Indian mallow Hanji, made by different pulping methods, such as alkali and sulfomethylated pulpings, and different stock compositions, various mixing ratios of bast fiber and wood core fibers. Indian mallow Hanjis made with 60% of woody core pulps were shown better Chinese ink spreading distance than those of the others. The Chinese ink spreading distance of the Indian mallow Hanjis made from bast fiber pulp only were unsuitable for Hwaseonji. The Chinese ink spreading distance of Indian mallow Hanji was closely related to the mixing ratio of long fiber and short fiber. Especially sulfomethylated pulping method was superior to alkali pulping method.
Anatomical properties of kenaf cultivated in Korea was investigated using light microscopy. Bast fiber, phloem ray and cortex parenchyma cell were observed in bast, and vessel, wood fiber and ray in core. A lot of solitary and multiple radial pores in core existed. The cell type of ray parenchyma in radial section was procumbent, upright and square cells. Uniseriate and multiseriate rays existed in tangential section. The layer of bast fiber in bast increased with increasing the growth period.
This study investigated the production of insoluble dietary fiber using forest waste and the dietary effect of manufactured insoluble fiber on physiological function in rat fed high cholesterol duets. Insoluble dietary fiber was prepared from the wood chips of oak (Quercus mongolica). The best condition for steam-explosion treatment for the preparation of insonuble dietary fiber was 25 kg/cm$^3$pressure for 6 minutes. In the chemical analysis of insoluble dietary fiber pretreated by 1% sodium hydroxide solution with steam-exploded wood, $\alpha$-cellulose content was 61.7% in the insoluble dietary fiber which contained 7.6% residual lignin. In order to compare insoluble dietary fiber with commercial $\alpha$-cellulose of physiological function, Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100$\pm$10 g were randomly assigned to one normal diet and five high cholesterol diet containing 1% cholesterol. The high cholesterol diet groups were classified as fiber free diet (FF group), 5% commercial $\alpha$-cellulose diet (5C group), 10% commercial $\alpha$-cellulose (l0C group), 5% insoluble dietary fiber dict (5M group), and 10% insoluble dietary fiber (10M group). The rats were fed ad libidum for 4 weeks. Food intake, weights gain, and food efficiency ratio in high cholesterol groups were higher than those of normal group, but there were no significant differences between the experimental groups. There were not any significant differences in the weights of livers, kidneys and small intestine of insoluble dietary fiber supplemented groups, but weight of cecum in all insolube dietary fiber group were significantly higher than those of FF group. A gstrointestinal transit time was decreased by supplementation of insoluble dietary fiber. Weight and water contents of feces in the insoluble dietary fiber supplemented groups were significantly higher than those of the FF group. There were not any significant differences in the activities of the glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) between the experimental groups. In conclusion, the manufactured insoluble dietary fiber and commercial insoluble fiber have the same physiological effects. The preparation method of the insoluble dietary fiber from the oak chips suited its purpose.
Wood Plastic Composite(WPC) has been introduced as a new constructional material in Europe and North America. The maintenance-free durability against weather was accepted by customers and the environment-friendly merits ignited the abrupt increase of market size. Domestic major companies have kicked off the WPC business at the market of outdoor constructional materials. Due to the high contents of natural wood fiber, the production equipments should be modified to remove the moisture, to prevent thermal degradation and to promote output rates. Materials including functional fillers play a critical role in rheological properties, which affects the physical and mechanical properties of the last products. More research might be performed for synergy effects combined by various academic fields from mechanical and chemical engineering to polymer process and material science.

To study the wood quality factors of Populus nigra $\times$ maxmowiczii known a rapidly growing species, the variations of green moisture contents, bulk density, wood fibre dimensions, microfibril angles, and number of leaf knot in stem wood were investigated. The heartwood contained a higher moisture content than the corresponding sapwood. Bulk density in radial patterns variations decrease outward from the pith, then increase toward the bark. The wood-fiber length and diameters had somewhat smaller values than on Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa or Populus euramericana. The microfibril angles decreased rapidly toward the outside, and their mean values were about 16 degree. The grain angles run nearly parallel to the cell axies. Number of leaf knot showed a fluctural change above ground level to a point near the base of the crown and then increased rapidly to the top of tree and average number of leaf knot varied exclusively from tree to tree.

Wood and non-wood material is widely used as a medium for filtration. It is a relatively low cost material and because of its construction, can be used to filter small particles(${\sim}5{\mu}m$). This fiber filter is concerned with characterizing some of the physical properties of wood & non-wood materials particularly relating to filtration of particles from dilute suspensions. In addition, they are nonuniform and tortuous as a result of the formation and variations in individual fibers.
