  • Electromagnetic shielding sheet using the carbon and wood fiber mixture was manufactured in an effort to develop an electromagnetic shielding packaging material. Carbon fibers were cut into 5, 10, and 15 mm using the automatic cutting device and blown and dispersed using compression air passed through the fine nozzle. Then carbon fibers were slurried with water (0.1% consistency), and softwood kraft pulp along with cone starch were added. The wet mats were manufactured by dewatering in modified hand-sheet machine. The wet mats were pressed upto $4kgf/cm^2$ in the carbon and wood fiber mixture mat press. The wet mats were dried in the automatic controlled plate dryer. Investigation on the formation and surface structure of the newly developed carbon and wood fiber mixture electromagnetic shielding sheet were carried out using the scanning electron microscopy and the image analyzer. Finally electromagnetic shielding characteristics of the newly developed carbon and wood mixture sheet were measured using net-work analyser. The result was promising in the light of the fact that this method could open a new way to substitute the expensive imported electromagnetic shielding sheet.

  • This study was performed to estimate total dust concentrations and particle size distribution of wood dust in the furniture and sawmill industries. To compare total wood dust concentrations, two samplers recommended by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health were used. Concentration data were analyzed by paired-t tests using the SAS program and two parameters of the particle size distributions were determined by histogram. The results were as follows: 1. Particle size distributions showed a unimodal pattern in cutting and a bimodal in sanding operations. Mass median aerodynamic diameters(MMAD) were $17.35{\mu}m$ in cutting, and $1.39{\mu}m$ for small mode and $18.89{\mu}m$ for large mode in sanding operations. The proportions of particle size larger than $9.8{\mu}m$ estimated by the impactor were 61.16 % in cutting and 62.33 % in sanding operations, respectively. 2. The average personal total dust concentrations measured by IPM sampler were $17.12mg/m^3$ (GSD=1.45) from indoor samples, $2.97mg/m^3$(GSD=1.90) from outdoor samples in cutting, and $8.01mg/m^3$(GSD=1.58) from sanding operation. And those of by 37 mm closed-face cassette were $9.12mg/m^3$(GSD=1.46), $1.06mg/m^3$(GSD=1.99) from cutting, and $3.32mg/m^3$(GSD=2.16) from sanding operations. 3. The average area total dust concentrations measured by IPM sampler were $1.88mg/m^3$(GSD=2.04) from indoor cutting, $4.76mg/m^3$(GSD=2.83) from indoor sanding operations. And those of by 37mm closed-face cassette were $0.49mg/m^3$(GSD=2.34) from cutting, and $1.32mg/m^3$(GSD=3.03) from sanding operations. 4. The ratio of personal total dust concentrations measured by 37 mm closed-face cassette to those by IPM sampler were 35.7 %, 53.3 % from cutting, and 41.4 % from sanding operations. 5. The ratio of area total dust concentrations measured by 37 mm closed-face cassette to those by IPM sampler were 26.1 % from cutting, and 27.7 % from sanding operations. 6. A statistically significant difference of total dust concentrations between the 37 mm closed-face cassette and the IPM sampler was found.

  • An understanding of potential lumber cutting yields may lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber in wood industry. Computer simulations of rough-mill operations require a lumber database as input to give reasonable estimates of such yields. The lumber database must contain detailed information regarding the location and type of defects, and then all manufacturing sequences can be tested with the same raw material. However, no suitable lumber database with mapped defects exists for Korean wood industry. In this study lumber databases of Pinus densiflora S. et Z and Quercus acutissima which are the main Korean domestic species were developed to prepare for coming era of "utilization of domestic species" in the near future. These databases were put into lumber cut-up simulation model(gang-rip-first simulator) to investigate the part yields. Gang-rip first simulation showed average part yields of 44.75% and 63.10% for Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora lumber database developed, respectively. In most cases process set-up of fixed blade best feed showed the best part yields and the level of acceptable defects could not make significant differences in part yields.

  • This study was fulfilled to investigate the anatomical characteristics according to provinces. In order to compare anatomical characteristics between provinces we selected Goseong, Hongcheon, and Bonghwa as experimental sites. To use the tree rings formed at the same years we dated all tree rings by cross-dating method used in dendrochronology and the cutting years were successfully dated in 2014, 2012, and 2014 for woods from Goseong, Hongchen, and Bonghwa, respectively. Based on the cutting years tracheid lengths and widths were measured considering juvenile wood (tree rings between the pith and first 10 years), heartwood (tree rings formed between 1955 and 1964), and sapwood (tree rings formed between 2002 and 2011). According to the results about differences between tracheid lengths from three provinces, juvenile wood did not show a difference, statistically, but heartwood and sapwood showed differences as the tracheid lengths following Bonghwa, Hongcheon, and Goseong. Bongwha also showed the largest value in the trachied width among three provinces. The tracheid lengths in the radial direction increased up to around the first 20 years, and then they showed stabilized. All wood samples showed typical Korean red pine's characteristics in anatomical observation under a light microscope.

  • To establish the mass propagation methods of Weigela subsessilis,, a promising native plant species for horticultural use, several factors influencing rooting from stem cuttings were evaluated. Softwood cuttings showed best rooting rate, 70~77%, in all the cutting media tested, 2.8 times more than hardwood cuttings in which perlite was best medium. The rooting from hardwood cuttings was promoted by higher concentration of all growth regulators used,500 mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA being the best with 80%. More than 80% of softwood cuttings treated by growth regulators produced roots, especially 100, 500, and 1000mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA producing 97%. Roofings from semi-wood cuttings was enhanced by all the growth regulators, except 1000 mg.L$^{-1}$ concentration in which rooting was reduce. Higher rooting rate was obtained by higher concentration and longer soaking duration of NAA in case of hardwood cutting. Softwood cutting showed 100 % rooting by soaking treatment with 500 mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA for 3 min. Rooting rate of semi-hardwood cuttings was promoted by higher concentration and longer soaking with growth regulators, However, the degree of improvement was lower than soft and hardwood cutting.

  • Biological control of blue stain fungi, such as Ophiostoma and Leptographium spp., that reduce the quality of logs and cause economic losses in wood product industry, was carried out in laboratory and field trials by a colorless strain of Ophiostoma quercus, BSFcs-1. Inoculation of pine wood chips with the colorless strain 1 wk before inoculating wild-type strain demonstrated that BSFcs-1 colonized wood chips and excluded blue stain fungi from being established. Efficacy of BSFcs-1 was compared with colorless strain of O. piliferum, which is commercially available under the trade name of Cartapip. Inoculation of pine wood logs with the colorless strain 1 wk before inoculating wild-type strain of blue stain in isolated wood chips, while O. quercus and O. floccosum colonized 0% and 17%, respectively. Simultaneous inoculation of logs with the colorless and wild-type strains resulted in decreased colonization (28%) by BSFcs-1, but increased colonization by O. quercus (185) and O. floccosum (29%). On the other hand, BSFcs-1 and wild-type strain alone colonized 75% and 71%, respectively. Treatment of the surface of log ends with mycelial suspension of BSFcs-1 after cutting also showed good control of blue stain fungi in a pine forest stands.

  • The first step to utilize the growing resources of Italian poplar (Populus euramericana I-476) for pulp-Woods, its characteristics and adaptabilities to the pulp industry must be investigated completely. The plantation methods are important for its fast growing in stock, and no less important is the cutting age for its utilization as pulpwood. In this paper, the stone groundwood pulping, refiner groundwood pulping and chemi-groundwood pulping characteristics by the age of tree, along with their physical and chemical characterstics were tested, and relationships between the age groups were analyzed to find out the optimum felling age. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The coefficient of pliability was a little higher in the case of younger trees. 2. The water retention value of each pulp was directly proportional to its physical strength, but this tendency was not detected between the age groups of sample woods. 3. Generally, the physical strength of younger wood pulp was lower regardless of the pulping process. But in the case of pretreatment with NaOH, Asphund and CGP pulp from 5 year old sample wood were stronger in physical strengths than those of GP and Asplund pulp with no pretreatment from 10 years old sample wood. 4. The tear factor of Asplund pulp with alkali pretreatment was higher than that of CGP pulp but the breaking length and the burst factor was similar in all processes. Considering the pulp yield and its brightness, CGP process seems to be advantageous. 5. The dissimilarity of physical strength between 7 and 10 years old wood pulp was not very large in all pulping processes but the physical strength of 5 year old wood pulp was very weak. In the of groundwood pulping from Italian poplar woods, 5 year old wood pulp should be mixed with other long fiber pulp for making a good paper.

  • International efforts to prevent illegally logged wood are expanding around the world. The "Legal Wood Trade Promotion System" was enacted in Korea in 2019 to strengthen the legal import and distribution of commercial wood in Korea. Since then, this system has promoted and ensured that the imported wood and wood products are legal with respect to the country of origin, wood species, and harvested area. As verification methods, DNA analysis technology and anatomical analysis using a microscope are mainly used in conjunction. Therefore, in this study, wood species of plywood were identified by analyzing the anatomical characteristics of various wood products for the first time. Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) and larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere) plywoods (7, 9 ply) were obtained from four companies that supply plywood in Korea. After cutting each company's plywood to a size of about 1 cm3, the layers from top to bottom were separated into single layers, and three sections were observed using an optical microscope. The results revealed that the plywood was composed of a mixture of softwood and hardwood wood species, pine wood species, poplar wood species, or a mixture of larch and pine wood species. Identification of wood species using microscopy is important and can enable the scientific analysis and verification of various wood products, including plywood, imported from countries where the likelihood of indiscriminate distribution of illegal wood and illegal logging is high.
