  • In a recent paper, Wonbae Choi raises two objections to my interpretation of the argument in Proslogium 3. The first one is that my interpretation is not new, and the second one is that there is an alternative interpretation which is better than mine. I defend my interpretation against them. I also touch on a related issue which can be derived from his second objection.

  • In my previous article "The Uncontested Principle and Wonbae Choi's Objections", I argued that the validity of modus ponens (as a deductive inference) is compatible with the claim that the Uncontested Principle is controversial. In his recent paper "The Uncontested Principle and Modus Ponens", Wonbae Choi criticizes my view again by making the following three claims: First, even though I do not take an inference of the form 'If A then (probably) C. A. $\therefore$ C' as an instance of modus ponens, this form of inference can be taken to be such an instance. Second, there is no grammatical indicator which allows us to distinguish between an indicative conditional based on a deductive inference and an indicative conditional based on an inductive inference, so that inferences based on these conditionals should not be treated as different types of inferences. Third, if we allow an indicative conditional based on an inductive inference, we thereby violate the so-called 'principle of harmony', which any logical concept should preserve. In this paper, I reply that his criticisms are all implausible.

The Uncontested Principle and Wonbae Choi's Objections (논란 없는 원리와 최원배 교수의 반론)

  • In my previous article "An Inferentialist Account of Indicative Conditionals" and "An Inferentialist Account of Indicative Conditionals and Hasuk Song's Objections", I argued that the so-called Uncontested Principle is not uncontestable. According to the Uncontested Principle, an indicative conditional '$A{\rightarrow}C$' logically implies a material conditional '$A{\supset}C$'. In his recent paper "On the Recent Controversies surrounding the Uncontested Principle" Wonbae Choi presents three objections to my claim. First, my denial of the Uncontested Principle implies rejecting modus ponens. Second, my denial of the Uncontested Principle is tantamount to taking the truth-conditions of an indicative conditional as weaker than those of a material conditional, which are usually taken to be the weakest among conditionals. Third, my view that we can warrantedly assert '$A{\rightarrow}C$' even when 'A ${\therefore}$ C' is inductively justified is based on a misunderstanding of the way in which indicative conditionals are justified. In this paper I argue that Choi's objections are all based on misunderstandings of my view. First, I do not deny the validity of modus ponens (as a form of deductive reasoning). Second, the fact that the inductive warrantability of 'A ${\therefore}$ C' does not imply the truth of '$A{\supset}C$' does not show that the truth-conditions of an indicative conditional is weaker than those of a material conditional. Third, Choi's claim that a contingent conditional '$A{\rightarrow}C$' is true only when 'C' can be deductively derived from 'A' in conjunction with a hidden premiss is not well grounded, nor does it fit the facts.

  • In a previous paper I argued that the denial of the uncontested principle results in the denial of modus ponens. In his reply Byeong Deok Lee explicitly says that he does not deny the validity of modus ponens though he still does not accept the uncontested principle. In this paper I show that his view is untenable.

  • In their recent paper published in this journal Shin Kim and Jinyong Lee have attacked some previous studies on the counterexample to modus ponens. Among their arguments I would like to discuss the following two; first, those attempts to explain van McGee's example by reference to conditional probability do not accord with van McGee's position, second, van McGee'e example is to be best seen as an argument containing the fallacy of equivocation. I show that the first argument is not correct, the second one is not so persuasive as it seemed first.

  • It is commonly believed that the model-theoretic account of logical consequence is originated from Tarski' s 1936 paper. But Etchemendy has denied this. This paper discusses and evaluates the recent controversies over whether the definition of logical consequence presented in Tarski' s paper is based on the fixed-domain conception or the variable-domain conception.

  • Much of literature on the paradoxes of confirmation has been focused on the problems raised by the fact that a nonblack nonraven confirms the hypothesis that every raven is black. In this paper I would like to emphasize that more interesting problems are still waiting to be explained, if we notice that a black nonraven confirms the raven hypothesis as well. For this I examine what Hempel exactly means by the paradoxes of confirmation, and show that the previous discussions on the paradoxes were at most partial solutions. Then I argue that Hempel presupposes the so-called 'converse consequence condition' regarding confirmational evidence. Finally I discuss what impact is made on the Bayesian solution to the paradoxes, if we accept a more faithful interpretation to Hempel.

  • About 90% of groundwater wells in Jeju Island are reported to be under the threat of contamination by infiltration of the surface pollutants. Most of those wells have improperly grouted annulus which is an empty space between the well and the inner casing. As a remedy to this problem, some of the wells were re-grouted by filling the annulus with cement without lifting an inner casing. In order to evaluate whether this method is appropriate for the geological structure of Jeju Island, two wells (W1 and W2) were selected and this method was applied. The water holding capacity did not decrease while the nitrate levels decreased from 16.8 and 20.2 to 6.8 and 13.8 mg/L in W1 and W2, respectively. The higher nitrate level in W2 is deemed to be influenced by the livestock farms located in the upper area of the well. In addition, transmissivity of the vedose zone was higher in W2 than W1, potentially facilitating the transport of nitrate to the groundwater. The overall result of this study suggests re-grouting of wells for the purpose of protecting water quality of goundwater should take into account geological structure of vadose zone as well as appropriate source control of the contaminants.

  • Objectives This study examined recent domestic and international clinical research trends in Gua sha therapy to suggest future direction for research. Methods We used six domestic and international databases (Research Information Sharing Service, Korean studies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library) to select clinical studies with an original text in English or Korean published after 2018. Results Finally, 55 studies were selected. Randomized controlled trials accounted for the largest amount with 42 studies. Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization was the most frequent term referring to Gua sha. Muscle shortening, limited range of motion, and plantar fasciitis were the most common symptoms, with six cases each. Additionally, there were two studies targeting symptoms other than the musculoskeletal system. Conclusions Additional research is needed on the effects of Gua sha therapy on the back of the lower extremities and hip joints, and research is needed on the possibility of their clinical use for diseases or symptoms other than those of the musculoskeletal system. And standards for the terminology of Gua sha and the types and methods of applied interventions are needed.

  • The objective of this study is to report the clinical effects of applying an integrated rehabilitation protocol to four patients with traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries. The treatments applied included acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion, chuna manual therapy, functional electrical stimulation, and other physical therapies. The evaluation methods included American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale, functional independence measure (FIM), modified Barthel index (MBI), numeric rating scale (NRS) and other scales. All patients presented marked improvements in FIM, MBI, NRS and other scales, along with increased muscle strength in the manual muscle test. The application of our protocol resulted in clear clinical benefits and enhanced the recovery and quality of life for the patients in this study.
