  • This article is a theoretical and empirical study of engineering and gender, and also explores the policy development of WIE program. WIE in Korea aims to foster talented women engineers through the introduction of gender-sensitive engineering education system, field-adaptive skill improvements of women students, and industry-university collaborations. This study examines gender perspectives to analyze our WIE program. It is important to recognize that it's not enough to acquire institutional and structural equity in developing women in engineering. Above all, we should note our situations that has frustrated women's career development in engineering. In university education, we need to improve the engineering faculty's recognition of gender equity. Efforts to establish the professional identity of women engineers, involvement of men and women students, and building of women engineers' network are necessary elements to implement successful WIE program. Additionally, we discuss that policy support to WIE program should be continued and enlarged in university level.

  • Women in the predominantly male-oriented college of engineering which is afflicted by the high dropout rate and the low employment rate of coeds in their majoring fields because of the die-hard male dominant culture. In order to resolve the related problems, P University has been actively engaged in a movement called "Women into Engineering" (WIE) to raise the gender cognitive awareness and to train women engineers for highly qualified work force. As part of the movement, a subject called "Women in Engineering" that focuses on the gender cognitive perspective is effective to reduce the dropout rate and to land a job inside their fields by stimulating their interest in their specialty and masting soft/hard skills. The study was conducted a survey of the coeds who have completed the "Women in Engineering" course to evaluate the degree of satisfaction perceived, and a t-test through comparing the group of the coeds and a group of coeds who have not taken the course. The results showed statistically significant responses indicating that both groups of coeds would like to see WIE offer more basic engineering courses like "Women in Engineering". This may lay the foundation to offer other major engineering courses for juniors and seniors that emphasize the gender cognitive approach.

  • This research analyzes effects on women students' psychological characteristics participating in WIE Program (WIE, Women into Engineering) which develops and manages with gender perspective to inspire needed qualities for them to have a career in the field of engineering and improve the use of women resources. We surveyed 207 women students in WIE Program about psychological characteristics of finding ways in one's major field and recognition of developing one's ability through the program. The results show that women students have strong desire to have a carrier in the field of engineering, but seem to have low self-efficacy about it. Each characteristics are different from students to students due to their backgrounds. Next, each psychological characteristics have meaningful differences between groups that are taking WIE Program and groups that are not, and also between groups that have a lot of experiences and groups that have not. Last, women students think that they will be able to gain positiveness, self-efficacy, challenging mind by participating in WIE Program.

  • This study investigated the effects of WIE(Women into Engineering) programs on women engineers' employment and career duration. For this study, the 91 female graduates with a degree in the field of engineering of K university who graduated from 2010 to 2013 were collected. The female graduates with a degree in the field of engineering of K university were divided into 4 groups-an employment group of relevant field of major, an employment group of irrelevant field of major, a group of graduate school, and a group of unemployment. The results were: first, the female graduates' program participation scores showed meaningful diversity according to the types of employment of female graduates with a degree in the field of engineering. Among the 4 types of employment of female graduates with a degree in the field of engineering, the group of graduate schoolers got the highest program participation scores, and the employment group of relevant field of major got the second scores, the group of unemployment got the third scores, and the employment group of irrelevant field of major got the last scores. Second, The female graduates' program participation scores showed meaningful diversity according to the career duration of female graduates with a degree in the field of engineering. The career duration in accordance with the program participation scores showed meaningful difference between the employment group of relevant field of major and the employment group of irrelevant field of major.

  • Instantized thin gruels have been popular to supplement patients who want nutritional, ready-to-eat, and easy-to-use products. In this study, rice-based thin gruels were developed by use of gelatinized rice powder which was manufactured by extrudating rice in a twin-screw extruder. Subsequently, the rice paste from the extruder were dried and ground into fine powder. The gelatinized rice powder was mixed with the powders of various grains, soy beans, nuts, oil seeds, and vegetables to formulate the instantized thin rice gruel with well-balanced nutrients (mixed powder). The mixed powder was granulated to improve reconstitution capability in a fluid bed spray granulator (granulated powder). Lipid and protein contents were higher by 0.9 and 1.9%, respectively, in the granulated powder whereas carbohydrate content was higher by 3.2% in the mixed powder. The calculated dispersibility was 93.7 and 77.0% for the granulated and the mixed powders, respectively. The reconstitution time was 122.3 and 305.3 for the granulated and the mixed powders, respectively. In conclusion, the granulation of the mixed powder improved the dispersibility. This study will be helpful to develop a variety of processed rice products and promote rice process industry.
