A Study on Health Care of the Aged Live in Seoul (노령자의 건강관리에 관한 연구 -서울 지역을 중심으로-)

  • This study aims to research on the actual state of the ways that the aged people live in Seoul use intentionally or unintentionally to maintain in their health. The aged people selected randomly for the study are 541 men and 902 women who are all more than 65 years old. This survey carried out from April to May in 1980. The results of this study are summed up as follows: 1. The main means of making a living engage was agriculture with the per cent of 57. 3 and next was commerce (11.9%). 2. As for their staple foods, the majority of them eat mixed food of rice and barley, and the rest eat rice or minor-grain mixed rice. As subsidiary foods, vegetables are the most common side dishes (68.9%) and see-weeds (6.7%) are taken by the minority of them. 3. Most of them (74.6%) frequently or occasionally take special health foods to maintaing their health. The most common health food turned out to be tonic liquor to men, while honey to women. 4. The majority of them(23.2% of men and 45.5% women) refrain from drinking and smoking. 5. 39.5 per cent of men and 25.5 per cent of wome) take light exercise such as going up hill and walking. 6. The majority of them undergo routine health check with the per cent of 10.8 or occasioanal health check with the 42.9. As medical treatment, many of them(45.9%) take Chinese remedies, western remedies(39.1%) and folk remedies (15.0%). 7. Many of them (66.0%) feel subjective symptoms about some geriatric diseases such as neuralgia, hypertension and cough. 8. Many of them (63.2%) free from mental trouble, while 17.7 per cent of them appeal to no job to do, 10.0 per cent of alienation and 9.1 per cent of domestic troubles. 9. Their subjective judgements of their secrets of health and longevity attach more importance to leading a regular life. 10. Most of them want to be served appropriate medical care, rest place, health consultations, etc. All these results reveal that health and longevity of the aged people are maintained by necessary cares and efforts, not by accident nor by apathy. It is thus highly desired tha tmany studies, enlightments and nationwide support about this problem be carried out in future.

Comparision of Maternal Charcteristics and Birth Weight among Five Different Categories of Medical Facility for Delivery in Taegu (대구시내 각급 의료기관에서 분만하는 산모들의 특성 및 출산결과의 비교 분석)

  • This study was conducted to compare the maternal charactristics, and birth weight of infants delivered at five different categories of medical facility in Taegu to examine the risk level of pregnant women and children by the medical facility for delivery. The study population included 1,410 pregnant women who delivered a baby at one of nine medical facilities (3 university hospitals, 2 general hospitals, 2 private clinics, 1 midwife clinic, 1 MCH center) in Taegu in April, 1987(April and May, 1987 for K university hospital), Pregnant women were interviewed to ask the age and educational level of woman, payment of medical fee, birth order, delivery method. Birth weight of infant was obtained from medical record. Mean ages of the women delivering at the university hospitals(27.5 years) and at general hospitals(26.7 years) were higher than those at midwife clinic(25.4 years) and at MCH center(26.1 years). Also, mean years of school education were higher in women of university hospitals(12.7 years) and general hospitals (12.2 years) than in women of midwife clinic(9.2 years) and MCH center (9.3 years). The percentages of women covered by the medical insurance were far greater in the university hospitals(78.1%) and general hospitals(82.9%) than in private clinics(44.3%) , midwife clinic(29.1%) and MCH center (5.4%). Infants born at the MCH center were mostly the second birth (47.3%) while 56.0% to 61.7% of infants born at all the other medical facilities were the first birth more women delivering at the university hospitals had history of spontaneous abortion as well as still birth than the women delivering at the other medical facilities. The preform birth rate (11.4%) and low birthweight incidence rates(5.8-13.0%) in university hospitals were significantly higher than those of other medical facilities. Accordingly, c-section rates showed a wide variation among the medical facilities. Study findings revealed that most of women delivering at the university hospitals and general hospitals are in the middle of or upper socio-economic class and obstetrically high risk group regardless of socioeconomic class while the wome delivering at the midwife clinic and MCH center are low risk group of low socioeconomic class. Therefore, the data of a specific medical facility are highly limited in interpretation and can not be generalized.

Effect of Blue Light on the Major Components of Soybean-sprouts (Blue광(光) 조사(照射)가 콩나물의 주요성분(主要成分)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Growth of soybean sprouts(Glycine Max L.) and amounts of some chemical components were measured when they were exposed to blue light (120lux, 3hrs/day) during their growth. Hypocotyl length of irradiated soybean sprouts exceeded slightly that of control (dark) soybean sprouts, but the tfresh weight of whole sprouts as well as each part of the sprout showed no difference between the two groups. Chlorophyll content of cotyledon under blue light increased significantly with the lapse of days (3.57 and $8.45\;{\mu}g/100g$ fresh weight on the 3rd and 7th day). Bluelight irradiated sprouts contained more vitamin C than control sprouts (21.7% and 30.8% higher for the cotyledon and hypocotyl). Total amount of protein was not affected. Hypocotyl protein content was 8% of that in original soybean. Blue light did not affect the activity of trypsin inhibitor of sprouts. Similar activity of the inhibitor was observed in the cotyledon whereas hypocotyl showed activity corresponding to 23.7% of original bean. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretogram for the protein showed 10, 9, and 11 bands in the original bean. 5th day cotyledon and hypocotyl respectively. Especially, band 3 of low Rm value was major protein component for the hypocotyl. Band 5 and 11 could be seen only in the protein of hypocotyl from bluelight irradiated sprouts, whereas no effect of blue light on the electrophoretogram was observed for the cotyledon.
