Security has become a major concern for many real world applications for wireless sensor networks. Usually, all these approaches are based on well known cryptographic algorithms. At the same time, performance analyses have shown that the applicability of sensor networks strongly depends on effective routing sessions or energy aware wireless communication. Based on our experiments, we provide some analyses and considerations on practical feasibility of such cryptographic algorithms in sensor networks.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are rapidly emerging because of their potential applications available in military and civilian environments. Due to unattended and hostile deployment environments, shared wireless links, and inherent resource constraints, providing high level security services is challenging in WSNs. In this paper, we revisit various security attack models and analyze them by using a well-known standard notation, Unified Modeling Language (UML). We provide a set of UML collaboration diagram and sequence diagrams of attack models witnessed in different network layers: physical, data/link, network, and transport. The proposed UML-based analysis not only can facilitate understanding of attack strategies, but can also provide a deep insight into designing/developing countermeasures in WSNs.

With the development of sensor, wireless mobile communication, embedded system and cloud computing, the technologies of Internet of Things have been widely used in real word. Connecting wireless sensor networks with traditional communication networks or Internet, IoT gateway plays an important role in IoT applications. It facilitates the integration of wireless sensor networks and mobile communication networks or Internet. The IoT gateway is a key component in IoT application systems. But It has lot of security issues. We analyzed the issues of security and privacy.

To guarantee secure communication in wireless sensor networks, secret keys should be securely established between sensor nodes. Recently, a simple key distribution scheme has been proposed for pair-wise key establishment in sensor networks by Anderson, Chan, and Perrig. They defined a practical attack model for non-critical commodity sensor networks. Unfortunately, the scheme is vulnerable under their attack model. In this paper, we describe the vulnerability in their scheme and propose a modified one. Our scheme is secure under their attack model and the security of our scheme is proved. Furthermore, our scheme does not require additional communication overhead nor additional infrastructure to load potential keys into sensor nodes.

Security in wireless sensor networks is very pressing especially when sensor nodes are deployed in hostile environments. To obtain security purposes, it is essential to be able to encrypt and authenticate messages sent amongst sensor nodes. Keys for encryption and authentication must be agreed upon by communicating nodes. Due to resource limitations and other unique features, obtaining such key agreement in wireless sensor network is extremely complex. Many key agreement schemes used in general networks, such as trusted server, Diffie-Hellman and public-key based schemes, are not suitable for wireless sensor networks [1], [2], [5], [7], [8]. In that situation, key pre-distribution scheme has been emerged and considered as the most appropriate scheme [2], [5], [7]. Based on that sense, we propose a new resource-optimal key pre-distribution scheme utilizing merits of the two existing key pre-distribution schemes [3], [4]. Our scheme exhibits the fascinating properties: substantial improvement in sensors' resource usage, rigorous guarantee of successfully deriving pairwise keys between any pair of nodes, greatly improved network resiliency against node capture attack. We also present a detailed analysis in terms of security and resource usage of the scheme.

In this article, we demonstrate that the asymmetric key-based architecture for securing wireless sensor networks recently introduced by Haque et al. is insecure under impersonation attack, since it does not provide authentication semantics. In addition, we show that, for the scheme to work correctly, the resulting key distribution construction should be symmetric and group-wise.

In this paper, we introduce a grid-based key pre-distribution scheme in wireless sensor networks, which aims to improve the connectivity and resiliency while maintaining a reasonable overhead. We consider simplification of the key establishment logic and enhancement of the connectivity via plat polynomial assignment on a three-dimensional grid for node allocation and keying material assignment. We demonstrate that our scheme results in improvements via a detailed discussion on the connectivity, resource usage, security features and resiliency. A comparison with other relevant works from the literature along with a demonstrated implementation on typical sensor nodes shows the feasibility of the introduced scheme and its applicability for large networks.

In spite of previous common assumptions about the incompatibility of public key cryptography (PKC) schemes with wireless sensor networks (WSNs), recent works have shown that they can be utilized for such networks in some manner. The major challenge of employing a PKC-based scheme in a wireless sensor network is posed by the resource limitations of the tiny sensors. Considering this sensor feature, in this paper we propose an efficient PKC-based security architecture with relatively lower resource requirements than those of previously proposed PKC schemes for WSN. In addition, our scheme aims to provide robust security in the network. Our security architecture comprises two basic components; a key handshaking scheme based on simple, linear operations and the derivation of a decryption key by a receiver node. Our architecture enables node-to-base-station and node-to-node secure communications. Analysis and simulation results show that our proposed architecture ensures a good level of security for network communications, and can be effectively implemented with the limited computational, memory, and energy budgets of current-generation sensor nodes.

Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (HEWSN) is a kind of wireless sensor networks (WSN), each sensor may has different attributes, HEWSN has been widely used in many aspects. Due to sensors are deployed in unattended environments and its resource constrained feature, the design of security and efficiency balanced authentication scheme for HEWSN becomes a vital challenge. In this paper, we propose a secure and lightweight user authentication and key agreement scheme based on biometric for HEWSN. Firstly, fuzzy extractor is adopted to handle the user's biometric information. Secondly, we achieve mutual authentication and key agreement among three entities, which are user, gateway and cluster head in the four phases. Finally, formal security analysis shows that the proposed scheme defends against various security pitfalls. Additionally, comparison results with other surviving relevant schemes show that our scheme is more efficient in term of computational cost, communication cost and estimated time. Therefore, the proposed scheme is well suitable for practical application in HEWSN.

In large-scale distributed sensor networks, it is often recommended to employ mobile sinks, instead of fixed base stations, for data collection to prolong network lifetime and enhance security. Mobile sinks may also be used, e.g., for network repair, identification and isolation of compromised sensor nodes and localized reprogramming, etc. In such circumstances, mobile sinks should be able to securely interact with neighbor sensor nodes while traversing the network. This paper presents a secure and efficient mobile query protocol that can be used for such purposes.
