This paper presents a real-time image transferring and localization system utilizing HSDPA, a commercial wireless network system. A novel image compression algorithm is developed based on MPEG4 to comply with uploading bandwidth of 130 kbps and QVGA image transmission of 30 fps. Aiming at being embedded in moving vehicles, the proposed system has a small size, low power consumption, and robustness to disturbances. We validate the performance of the system by presenting captured images of transferring video and localization data. Our system can be applied to real-time surround monitoring in moving vehicles or real-time ecology observation in remote places.

This paper considers the cost minimization issue for sensor network systems where sensor energy is supplied by remote energy sources wirelessly. Assuming symmetric structures of sensor nodes and energy sources, cost minimization problem is formulated, where the cost of sensor networks is represented as a function of sensor node density and energy source coverage. The optimal solution for the problem is provided and simulation results show that the proposal scheme achieves around 19% cost reduction in comparision to a conventional scheme.
Cooperative communications (CC) have received a great deal of attention recently as an efficient way to obtain the spatial diversity without physical arrays. Thus, space-time block codes (STBC) which are well-known for use in co-located multi-antenna systems can be still utilized for single-antenna users in a distributed fashion. In this paper, we propose a cooperative signaling structure using the $\frac{3}{4}$-rate STBC and derive closed-form BER expression which takes the effect of network geometry and transmit power constraint into account. A variety of simulated and numerical results demonstrated the cooperation considerably outperforms the direct transmission when partners are located in appropriate positions.

A key issue toward mobile multimedia communications is to create technologies for broadband signal transmission that can support high quality services. Such a broadband mobile communications system should be able to overcome severe distortion caused by time-varying multi-path fading channel, while providing high spectral efficiency and low power consumption. For these reasons, an adaptive suboptimum decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for the single-carrier short-burst transmissions system is considered as one of the feasible solutions. For the performance improvement of the system with the short-burst format including the short training sequence, in this paper, the multiple-training least mean square (MTLMS) based DFE scheme with soft decision feedback is proposed and its performance is investigated in mobile wireless channels throughout computer simulation.
The realization of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) has been fostered by the availability of low cost and low power CMOS devices. However, the transmission of bulk video data requires adequate bandwidth, which cannot be promised by single path communication on an intrinsically low resourced sensor network. Moreover, the distortion or artifacts in the video data and the adherence to delay threshold adds to the challenge. In this paper, we propose a two stage Quality of Service (QoS) guaranteeing scheme called Prioritized Multipath WMSN (PMW) for transmitting H.264 encoded video. Multipath selection based on QoS metrics is done in the first stage, while the second stage further prioritizes the paths for sending H.264 encoded video frames on the best available path. PMW uses two composite metrics that are comprised of hop-count, path energy, BER, and end-to-end delay. A color-coded assisted network maintenance and failure recovery scheme has also been proposed using (a) smart greedy mode, (b) walking back mode, and (c) path switchover. Moreover, feedback controlled adaptive video encoding can smartly tune the encoding parameters based on the perceived video quality. Computer simulation using OPNET validates that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the conventional approaches on human eye perception and delay.
Various applications based on the location information of things are developed as entering by the ubiquitous computing age. Wireless sensor networks are suitable to indoor location-based service because of the important features such as low-power consumption, low-cost, easy deployment, etc. To recognize the distance between nodes, the indoor location-based system transmits both ultrasound signal and radio signal periodically. However, increment of the number of deployed sensor nodes make lots of collision and interference among the signals and it can degrade the accuracy of location-based system. In this paper, we propose a beacon management mechanism to increase the probability of transmission chance to the nearest beacon from the listener. It can minimize collision and interference and reduce the error probability due to the characteristics of ultrasound.

Internet of Things(IoT) is a technology or environment that collects data by attaching sensors to objects and transmits the collected information to each other through wired / wireless communication in real time. It is expected that when the Internet of objects is activated, many objects can identify and recognize each other by themselves and provide various services to facilitate our lives through mutual information exchange. In addition, the internet market for things is growing rapidly each year, and various IT technologies are expected to converge. In the Internet environment of objects, data exchange technology between object devices, that is, message protocol, is classified as one of important technologies. In this paper, we examine various lightweight message protocols suitable for the Internet environment of objects, and compare the reliability of the CoAP protocol structure with the MQTT protocol for a limited environment. Finally, we confirm the reliability of TCP / TLS and WebSockets-based CoAP transmission protocol of IETF's CoRE WG that can use various transport layers other than UDP in Internet environment including cloud infrastructure.
This paper investigates the effect of hardware impairments (HIs) and imperfect channel state information (ICSI) on a SWIPT-assisted adaptive nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA)/orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system over independent and nonidentical Rayleigh fading channels. In the NOMA mode, the energy-constrained near users act as a relay to improve the performance for the far users. The OMA transmission mode is adopted to avoid a complete outage when NOMA is infeasible. The best user selection scheme is considered to maximize the energy harvested and avoid error propagation. To characterize the performance of the proposed systems, closed-form and asymptotic expressions of the outage probability for both near and far users are studied. Moreover, exact and approximate expressions of the ergodic rate for near and far users are investigated. Simulation results are provided to verify our theoretical analysis and confirm the superiority of the proposed NOMA/OMA scheme in comparison with the conventional NOMA and OMA protocol with/without HIs and ICSI.

Modern military operations rely heavily on broadband communication and data transmission. Recently, the rising use of intelligent unmanned technology necessitates more frequencies. Free-space optical(FSO) communication can offer high-data-rate communications with high security and no need for licensing. Therefore, the FSO communication holds significant interest and potential in the defense industry. In this paper, we present design of a FSO communication terminal taking Korean domestic weather conditions into account. The domestic atmospheric attenuation is analyzed using several models and two-year meteorological information for a city in Korea, and this analysis is utilized to design the FSO communication terminal. The design results were verified using an FSO communication test bed, and we achieved an Ethernet bandwidth of approximately 1.86 Gbps at a distance of 1.3 km with the optical amplifier output power of the test bed set to about 20 dBm.

In this paper, we analyze the pros and cons of the fast power control to the forward link in the environments where mixed traffics of voice and data produce the transmitted/received power difference. We propose the Zone-based power control scheme that can improve the performance of the fast power control scheme in the viewpoint of the resource allocation. The proposed scheme is a mechanism that controls both the power and rate of non-realtime data traffics according to location distribution of the mobile stations. The scheme is based on the conventional fast power control scheme in the CDMA systems, and it adaptively controls the transmission rate of each data traffic. Zone-based rate control of data call brings about somewhat power margin to the call. As a result, the proposed scheme saves the power consumption of portables and reduces the amount of interference. With the proposed scheme, not only be extended the service coverage of high-rate traffic to the entire cell service coverage, but also the QoS of low-rate traffic can keep going through the service time, especially, in the situation that the amount of incoming interference is much larger. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme yields a improved performance compared with the conventional scheme in terms of the power consumption and traffic throughput of portables, especially, with the increasing number of high-rate data traffics.
