In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for Internet of Things (IoT) environment, fault tolerance is a most fundamental issue due to strict energy constraint of sensor node. In this paper, a robust energy saving data dissemination protocol for IoT-WSNs is proposed. Minimized energy consumption and dissemination delay time based on signal strength play an important role in our scheme. The representative dissemination protocol SPIN (Sensor Protocols for Information via Negotiation) overcomes overlapped data problem of the classical Flooding scheme. However, SPIN never considers distance between nodes, thus the issue of dissemination energy consumption is becoming more important problem. In order to minimize the energy consumption, the shortest path between sensors should be considered to disseminate the data through the entire IoT-WSNs. SPMS (Shortest Path Mined SPIN) scheme creates routing tables using Bellman Ford method and forwards data through a multi-hop manner to optimize power consumption and delay time. Due to these properties, it is very hard to avoid heavy traffic when routing information is updated. Additionally, a node failure of SPMS would be caused by frequently using some sensors on the shortest path, thus network lifetime might be shortened quickly. In contrast, our scheme is resilient to these failures because it employs energy aware concept. The dissemination delay time of the proposed protocol without a routing table is similar to that of shortest path-based SPMS. In addition, our protocol does not require routing table, which needs a lot of control packets, thus it prevents excessive control message generation. Finally, the proposed scheme outperforms previous schemes in terms of data transmission success ratio, therefore our protocol could be appropriate for IoT-WSNs environment.

In the most IPS (Indoor Positioning System), it is available to specify the user's movement by sending a specific signal from a tag such as a beacon to multiple receivers. This method is very efficiently used in places where the number of people is limited. On the other hand, in large commercial facilities, it is nearly difficult to apply the existing IPS method because it is necessary to attach a tag to each customer. In this paper, we propose a system that uses an external sensor grid to identify people's movement without using tags. Each sensor node uses both an ultrasonic sensor and an infrared sensor to monitor people's movements and sends collected data to the main server through wireless transmission for easy system maintenance. The operation was verified using the FPGA board, and we designed a VLSI circuit in 180nm process.

Wall obstruction is the main factor leading to the non-line of sight (NLoS) error of indoor localization based on received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Modeling and correcting the path loss of the signals through the wall will improve the accuracy of RSSI localization. Based on electromagnetic wave propagation theory, the reflection and transmission process of wireless signals propagation through the wall is analyzed. The path loss of signals through wall is deduced based on power loss and RSSI definition, and the theoretical model of path loss of signals through wall is proposed. In view of electromagnetic characteristic parameters of the theoretical model usually cannot be accurately obtained, the statistical model of NLoS error caused by the signals through the wall is presented based on the log-distance path loss model to solve the parameters. Combining the statistical model and theoretical model, a hybrid model of path loss of signals through wall is proposed. Based on the empirical values of electromagnetic characteristic parameters of the concrete wall, the effect of each electromagnetic characteristic parameters on path loss is analyzed, and the theoretical model of regional path loss of signals through the wall is established. The statistical model and hybrid model of regional path loss of signals through wall are established by RSSI observation experiments, respectively. The hybrid model can solve the problem of path loss when the material of wall is unknown. The results show that the hybrid model can better express the actual trend of the regional path loss and maintain the pass loss continuity of adjacent areas. The validity of the hybrid model is verified by inverse computation of the RSSI of the extended region, and the calculated RSSI is basically consistent with the measured RSSI. The hybrid model can be used to forecast regional path loss of signals through the wall.
In ad-hoc networks, dynamically reconfigurable and temporary wireless networks, all mobile devices cooperatively maintain network connectivity with no assistance of base stations while they have limited amounts of energy that is used in different rates depending on the power level. Since every node has to perform the functions of a router, if some nodes die early due to lack of energy, it will not be possible for other nodes to communicate with each other and network lifetime will be shortened. Consequently, it is very important to develop a technique to efficiently consume the limited amounts of energy resources so that the network lifetime is maximized. In this paper, geographical localized routing is proposed to help making smarter routing decision using only local information and reduce the routing overhead. The proposed localized routing algorithm selects energy-aware neighbors considering the transmission energy and error rate over the wireless link, and the residual energy of the node, which enables nodes to achieve balanced energy-consumption and the network lifetime to prolong.
This study presents an analysis of the human body channel as an electric signal path using body impulse response (BIR). The human body communications (HBC) has recently emerged as an effective signal transmission method to create wireless body area networks (WBAN). We provide body channel characteristics based on measured BIR in a proper experimental environment for the HBC using capacitive coupling with a customized channel sounding device, which can be applied as a guideline for the HBC system design. The frequency response of the BIR, extracted by a customized signal processing for the measure signals, shows the channel path loss (CPS) between 0 MHz and 100 MHz with an average CPS of approximately 46.8 dB. In addition, the relative noise power distributions can provide estimations on the signal to noise ratio at the HBC receiver in terms of capacitor and resistor values in the measured frequency band and the frequency band lower than 3 MHz considering the baseband signal detection.

Marine radioactivity monitoring is critical for taking immediate action in case of unexpected nuclear accidents at nuclear facilities located near coastal areas. Especially when the level of contamination is not predictable, mobile monitoring systems will be useful for wide-area ocean radiation survey and for determination of the level of radioactivity. Here, we used a silicon photomultiplier and a high-efficiency GAGG crystal to fabricate a compact, battery-powered gamma spectroscopy that can be used in an ocean environment. The developed spectroscopy has compact dimensions of 6.5 × 6.5× 8 cm3 and weighs 560 g. We used LoRa, a low-power wireless protocol for communication. Successful data transmission was achieved within 1.4 m water depth. The developed gamma spectroscopy was able to detect radioactivity from a 137Cs point source (3.7 kBq) at a distance of 20 cm in water. Moreover, we demonstrated an unmanned radioactivity monitoring system in a real sea by combining unmanned surface vehicle with the developed gamma spectroscopy. A hidden 137Cs source (3.07 MBq) was detected by the unmanned system at a distance of 3 m. After successfully testing the developed mobile spectroscopy in an ocean environment, we believe that our proposed system will be an effective solution for mobile real-time marine radioactivity monitoring.

Smart City, a key application area of the AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things), provides various services in safety, security, and healthcare sectors through location tracking and location-based services. an IPS (Indoor Positioning System) is required to implement location-based services, and wireless communication technologies such as WiFi, UWB (Ultra-wideband), and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) are being applied. BLE, which enables data transmission and reception with low power consumption, can be applied to various IoT devices such as sensors and beacons at a low cost, making it one of the most suitable wireless communication technologies for indoor positioning. BLE utilizes the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) to estimate the distance, but due to the influence of multipath fading, which causes variations in signal strength, it results in an error of several meters. In this paper, we conducted research on a path loss model that can be applied to BLE IPS for proximity services, and confirmed that optimizing the free space propagation loss coefficient can reduce the distance error between the Tx and Rx devices.

Conventional wireless sensor network(WSN) has limited power and bandwidth. In order to develop multimedia sensor technology, high data rate communication systems are required. Cooperative communication system can help to decrease power consumption through spatial diversity. In cooperative transmission, one partner node assists one sensor node to transmit their data to destination. Instead of using M partners for M sensor nodes, we propose 1 partner for M sensor nodes. Proposed protocol offers similar diversity order as conventional one with much less bandwidth and hardware. It is able to almost reduce scattered nodes interference using orthogonal sub-carriers. In addition, we examined a power allocation between sensor nodes and relay that optimize the system performance.
In Internet of Things (IoT) environments, billions of interconnected devices and multimedia sensors generate a huge amount of multimedia traffic. Since the environment are in general deployed as a server-centric architecture wireless sensor networks could be bottlenecks between IoT gateways and IoT devices. The bottleneck causes high power consumption of the device and triggers very heavy network overload by transmission of sensing data. The deterioration could decrease the quality of multimedia streaming service due to delay, loss, and waste of device power. Thus, in this paper, we propose a context-based adaptive multimedia streaming scheme to support enhanced QoS and low power consumption in IoT environments. The goal of the scheme is to increase quality score per voltage of the streaming service, given an adaptation algorithm with context that are classified network and hardware such as throughput, RTT, and CPU usage. From the both context, the quality score per voltage is used in the comparison of a only network context-based adaptive multimedia streaming scheme, a fixed multimedia streaming and our scheme. As a result, we achieves a high improvement that means the quality score per voltage is increased up to about 4, especially in case of resolution change.

Cognitive radio(CR) technique which utilizes empty frequency bands allocated to private business but not being used temporally has been researched. According to the standard, CR users detect the primary user using the same channel, CR users should move to the another channel to guarantee the primary user's decodability. Thus, CR systems cannot use the same channel and support the CR user's QoS(Quality of Service) during the channel moving time. In this paper, we propose a radio resource sharing method that CR basestation controls the transmission power with the primary user's SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) to increase the spectral efficiency of area and to minimize the outage of CR users. In addition, computer simulation demonstrates show that the proposed method improved spectral efficiency of area and decreased outage probability of CR users.
