  • In this paper, a wideband two-layer H-shaped microstrip antenna for WLAN is designed. To increase the bandwidth of microstrip patch antenna a configuration of stacked type using parastic element is used. Furthermore, to reduce the size of microstrip patch antenna, two techniques are employed . the first one is H-shaped patch type and the second one is that the main radiator and parastic patch are shorted to the ground plane using ten shorting posts. The antenna bandwidth and radiation characteristics are calculated by ENSEMBLE ver. 5.0 simulation software, and compared with the experimental results. Experiment results show that the bandwidth of antenna in 740㎒ centered at 5.46㎓(13.5%), which is close agreement with the calculations, 770㎒(13%). Also, the antenna size can be reduced by 71.5% compared with the half wavelength rectangular microstrip antenna using the same substrate at the same frequency.

  • This letter presents a compact dual-mode tri-band bandpass filter by using a short-circuited stub-loaded stepped-impedance resonator (SIR) and a short-circuited stub-loaded uniform impedance resonator. Also, a hairpin SIR geometry is introduced to miniature the size of this filter while maintaining excellent performance. The use of a short-circuited stub at the central point of the hairpin SIR can generate two resonant modes in two passbands. Its equivalent circuit structure is analyzed by using the even-odd mode theory. For demonstration purposes, a tri-band filter for the applications of the Global Positioning System at 1.57 GHz, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access at 3.5 GHz, and wireless local area networks at 5.2 GHz is designed, fabricated, and measured.

  • In this paper, we explore a low-complex bandwidth allocation (BA) scheme with multi-level service guarantees in VLC-OFDM systems. Effective capacity theory, which evaluates wireless channel capacity from a novel view, is utilized to model the system capacity under delay QoS constraints of the link layer. Since intensity modulation of light is used in the system, problems caused by frequency selectivity can be neglected. Then, the BA problem can be formulated as an integer programming problem and it is further relaxed and transformed into a concave one. Lagrangian formulation is used to reformulate the concave problem. Considering the inefficiency of traditional gradient-based schemes and the demand for distributed implementation in local area networks, we localize the global parameters and propose a quasi-distributed quadratic allocation algorithm to provide two-level service guarantees, the first level is QoS oriented, and the second level is QoE oriented. Simulations have shown the efficient performance of the proposed algorithm. The users with more stringent QoS requirements require more subcarriers to guarantee their statistical delay QoS requirements. We also analyze the effect of subcarrier granularity on the aggregate effective capacity via simulations.

  • As electrocardiogram (ECG) signals are generally sampled with a frequency of over 200 Hz, a method to compress diagnostic information without losing data is required to store and transmit them efficiently on a wireless personal area network (WPAN). In this paper, an ECG signal compression method for communications onWPAN, which uses feature points based on curvature, is proposed. The feature points of P, Q, R, S, and T waves, which are critical components of the ECG signal, have large curvature values compared to other vertexes. Thus, these vertexes were extracted with the proposed method, which uses local extrema of curvatures. Furthermore, in order to minimize reconstruction errors of the ECG signal, extra vertexes were added according to the iterative vertex selectionmethod. Through the experimental results on the ECG signals from Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel hospital arrhythmia database, it was concluded that the vertexes selected by the proposed method preserved all feature points of the ECG signals. In addition, it was more efficient than the amplitude zone time epoch coding method.

  • In this paper, a dual-band open-ended circular ring moNopole antenna for WLAN(Wireless Local Area Networks) applications. The proposed antenna is based on a planar moNopole design, and composed of open-ended one circular ring of radiating patches for dual-band operation. To obtain the optimized parameters, we used the simulator, Ansoft's High Frequency Structure Simulator(HFSS) and found the parameters that effect antenna characteristics. Using the obtained parameters, the proposed antenna is fabricated. The fabricated antenna is measured at the operating frequencies(2.4-2.484 GHz, 5.15-5.825 GHz), and the return loss coefficient, gain, and radiation patterns are determined.

  • Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) algorithms play an important role in ensuring quality of service in an integrated HetNets (Heterogeneous Networks). The primary objective of this paper is to develop a multi-criteria vertical handoff decision algorithm (VHDA) for best access network selection in an integrated Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)/Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) system. The proposed design consists of two parts, the first part is the evaluation of an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to decide the relative weights of handoff decision criteria and the second part computes the final score of the weights to rank network alternatives using Simple Additive Weighting (SAW). SAW ranks the network alternatives in a faster and simpler manner than AHP. The AHP-SAW mathematical model has been designed, evaluated and simulated for streaming video type of traffic. For other traffic type, such as conversational, background and interactive, only simulation results have been discussed and presented in brief. Simulation results reveal that the hierarchical modelling and computing provides optimum solution for access network selection in an integrated environment as obtained results prove to be an acceptable solution to what could be expected in real life scenarios.

  • IEEE 802.11ax is a protocol being developed for high-density Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). Several algorithms have been proposed to improve the level of spatial reuse applied in IEEE 802.11ax. However, these algorithms are tentative and do not specify how to select the transmit power and carrier sense threshold in practice; It is unclear when and why the tuned parameters lead to better network performance. In this paper, we restricted the scale of transmit power tuning to prevent the case of backfire in which spatial reuse will result in transmission failure. If the restrictions cannot be satisfied, spatial reuse will be abandoned. This is why we named the proposed scheme as Arbitration based Spatial Reuse (ASR). We quantified the network performance after spatial reuse, and formulate a corresponding maximum problem whose solution is the optimal carrier sense threshold and transmit power. We verified our theoretical analysis by simulation and compared it with previous studies, and the results show that ASR improves the throughput up to 8.6% compared with 802.11ax. ASR can avoid failure of spatial reuse, while the spatial reuse failure rate of existing schemes can up to 36%. To use the ASR scheme in practice, we investigate the relation between the optimal carrier sense threshold and transmit power. Based on the relations got from ASR, the proposed Relation based Spatial Reuse (RSR) scheme can get a satisfactory performance by using only the interference perceived and the previously found relations.

  • The handover procedure of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) introduces significant delay, which can degrade the quality of service (QoS) especially for delay-sensitive applications. Although studies have been conducted to support handover in SDN-based WLAN, there is no research to reduce the channel scanning procedure that takes up the most delay time in the handover process. The channel scanning procedure is essential to determine the appropriate access point (AP). To mitigate this problem, this paper proposes a SWITCH: SDN-WLAN integrated handover scheme for QoS-Guaranteed mobile service. In SWITCH, each AP periodically broadcasts beacon frames through different channels in a predetermined order that includes the operating channel information of the AP. This allows mobile stations (MSs) to receive the beacon frames of nearby APs, and therefore they can determine the appropriate APs for handover without the channel scanning procedure. By reporting the information of the newly moved AP to the SDN controller, a flow rule is installed in advance to provide fast handover, and packet loss is reduced by buffering data destined for MS. In addition, the proposed scheme can adaptively operate SWITCH to consider the user location and QoS requirement of flow to save radio resource overhead. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that SWITCH can reduce the handover delays, flow table utilization ratio and radio resource overhead while improving the network throughput.

  • In tactical wireless local area networks, jamming attack can easily occur by sending out continuous radio signals. The damage will be serious when the channel frequency is identical. Since wireless channel environment is open to everyone, the perfect solution for jamming attack does not exist. However, a channel-hopping scheme is well known for mitigating those jamming attacks. In this paper, I consider various channel-hopping schemes in order to analyze the throughput and fairness performance under smart jammer attack. Also an analytical model is introduced to evaluate the throughput performances of channel-hopping schemes. After analyzing well known channel-hopping schemes, I propose a simple channel-hopping scheme that can enhance fairness significantly at minimal throughput degradation expense.
