An Adaptive MAC Protocol for Wireless LANs

  • This paper focuses on contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless local area networks. We propose a novel MAC protocol called adaptive backoff tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the request-to-send/clear-to-send mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.

Idle Mode for Deep Power Save in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

  • Along with the wide acceptance of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN), new applications such as Internet protocol (IP) telephony over WLAN are fast emerging today. For battery-powered IP phone devices, the life time extension is a key concern for the market acceptance while today's 802.11 is not optimized for snch an operation. In this paper, we propose a novel idle mode operation, which comprises paging, idle handoff, and delayed handoff. Under the idle mode operation, a mobile host(MH) without any active session does not need to perform handoff within a predefined paging area (PA). Only when it enters a new PA, an idle handoff is performed. The proposed idle mode allows an MH without traffic to extend its life time. We develop a new analytical model in order to comparatively evaluate our proposed scheme. The numerical resnlts demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes with respect to power consumption.

  • 글로벌 로밍환경 구축을 위해 UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems)와 WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network)의 각각의 장단점을 보완하여 통합한 인터네트워킹에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 현재 UMTS와 WLAN의 인터네트워킹 방식은 크게 loosely-coupled 방식과 장기적 접근을 요구하는 tightly-coupled 방식으로 나눌 수 있다. Loosely-coupled 방식은 MIPv6(Mobile IP version 6)의 HA/AR(Home Agent/Access Router)를 사용하여 핸드오버(handover, HO)를 구현하는 방식이다. Loosely-coupled 방식은 IWU(Inter Woriking Unit)을 통해 직접적으로 두 망이 연결되어 있는 tightly-coupled 방식에 비해 독립적 확장이 가능하고 비교적 구현이 쉬우나 핸드오버의 지연으로 인한 패킷 손실과 서비스 끊김 등의 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이를 개선하기 위하여 HMIPv6(Hierarchical MIPv6)를 사용하여 UMTS와 WLAN의 인터네트지킹에 대한 핸드오버 프로시저를 제안한다. 총 핸드오버 시간을 구하고 시뮬레이션을 통해 제안된 HMIPv6를 사용한 방식이 기존의 MIPv6를 사용한 방식보다 성능이 우수함을 확인하였다.

  • A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a flexible data communication system implemented as an extension to, or as an alternative for, a wired LAN with in a building or campus. However, communications in an indoor environment present problems not encountered in outdoor wireless communication systems. Since cellular type systems are interference limited, the indoor environment is more hostile than the outdoor environment due to the lower propagation constant. In this paper, the equation for the signal to interference ratio in a multistory building will be derived. Knowing the S/I ratio, the floor frequency reuse can be determined. Finally, the simulation in this research is designed to study the performance (BER) of WLAN system in the multistory environment by applying the 8-PSK Trellis Coded modulation technique. The procedure allows a quick evaluation of BER in Wireless LAN system due to the co-channel interference.

Wireless LAN with Medical-Grade QoS for E-Healthcare

  • In this paper, we study the problem of how to design a medical-grade wireless local area network (WLAN) for healthcare facilities. First, unlike the IEEE 802.11e MAC, which categorizes traffic primarily by their delay constraints, we prioritize medical applications according to their medical urgency. Second, we propose a mechanism that can guarantee absolute priority to each traffic category, which is critical for medical-grade quality of service (QoS), while the conventional 802.11e MAC only provides relative priority to each traffic category. Based on absolute priority, we focus on the performance of real-time patient monitoring applications, and derive the optimal contention window size that can significantly improve the throughput performance. Finally, for proper performance evaluation from a medical viewpoint, we introduce the weighted diagnostic distortion (WDD) as a medical QoS metric to effectively measure the medical diagnosability by extracting the main diagnostic features of medical signal. Our simulation result shows that the proposed mechanism, together with medical categorization using absolute priority, can significantly improve the medical-grade QoS performance over the conventional IEEE 802.11e MAC.

  • In this paper, the selective use of RTS and CTS frames is considered to analyze the capacity of IEEE 802.11 WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). The RTS and CTS frames are used to transmit the data frames longer than dot11RTSThreshold according to IEEE 802.11 specification. The analysis of the optimal RTS-CTS threshold is derived to maximize the capacity of IEEE 802.11 WLAN. And, numerical examples are also presented for IEEE 802.11 a and b WLANs.

Performance Analysis of Multi-Gigabit Wireless Transmission at THz WLAN-Type Applications

  • Optimal position of access point (AP) is important for multi-gigabit wireless transmission in terahertz (THz) wireless local area network (WLAN)-type applications, where there exist the THz characteristic multiple clusters in channel propagation. By considering the multiple clusters in THz indoor communications, this paper investigates the optimal AP position when two APs are issued for increasing the system capacity. Numerical results reveal that the central position of each AP within each half service region, which offers the shortest cumulated path length for line-of-sight paths, is optimal to achieve the maximal system capacity.

폴디드 구조와 단락 구조를 이용한 5 GHz 무선 랜용 광대역 패치 안테나 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Wideband Patch Antenna with Folded and Shorted Structure for 5 GHz WLAN)

  • 본 논문에서는 폴디드 구조와 단락 구조를 이용한 5GHz WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network)용 광대역 패치 안테나를 제안한다 제안된 안테나는 소형화와 광대역화를 위해 사각 패치에 폴디드 구조와 단락 구조를 사용하였다. 3차원 전산 모의 실험 프로그램인 Ansoft사의 HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator)를 사용하여 안테나를 설계하였으며, 구현된 안테나는 HP 8720C 네트?p 분석 기 와 far field measurement chamber를 사용하여 측정하였다. 전산 모의 실험 결과 반사 손실은 전체 사용 주파수 대역에서 13.41dB 이상으로 비교적 양호한 특성을 나타내었으며, 10dB 대역폭은 1,523MHz로 광대역 특성을 나타내었다. 또한, 제안된 안테나의 최대 이득은 5.825 GHz에서 6.57dBi의 특성을 보였다. 구현된 폴디드-단락 구조 안테나의 반사 손실 측정 결과 10dB 대역폭은 1,377 MHz의 특성을 보였다. 구현된 안테나의 이득 측정 결과 5.775 GHz에서 6.87 dBi의 최대 이득을 나타내었다. 구현된 안테나는 5GHz WLAN에 적용 가능한 성능을 나타내었다.

Development of a WLAN Based Monitoring System for Group Activity Measurement in Real-Time

  • In recent years, there has been a rise in epidemiological evidence suggesting the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle. However, it is not always easy for individuals to personally recognize the optimal conditions for exercise and physical activity. Wearable acceleration-based pedometers have become widely used in estimating the amount of physical activity, and to a limited extent, providing information regarding exercise intensity, but they have never been used to assess adaptation to exercise. In order to realize simultaneous activity monitoring for multiple users exercising outdoors, we developed a prototype wireless local area network (WLAN) based system. In our system, a WLAN is deployed outside, and a user wearing a smart phone and monitoring device exercises freely within the coverage area of the wireless network. By doing so, the developed system is able to monitor the activity of each user andmeasures various parameters including those related to exercise adaptation. In a demonstration experiment, the developed system was evaluated and used to monitor users enjoying a Nordic walk, after which users were immediately able to receive their exercise report. In this paper, we discuss the requirements and issues in developing an activity monitoring system and report the findings we obtained through the demonstration experiment.

S-DMB와 2.4/5 GHz WLAN 신호 수신을 위한 이중 광대역 다이폴형 안테나의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Dual Wideband Dipole Type Antenna for the Reception of S-DMB and 2.4/5 GHz WLAN Signals)

  • 본 논문에서는 S-DMB(Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting)와 2.4/5 GHz WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) 신호 수신을 위한 이중 광대역 다이폴형 안테나를 설계 및 구현하였다. 제안된 안테나는 기존 모노폴형 이중 대역 안테나를 기본으로 하여 평면형 광대역 다이폴 형태로서 $8{\times}33.8{\times}1.68mm^3$ 크기로 구현되었다. 안테나는 1.6 mm 두께의 FR4 기판위에 인쇄되어 있는 형태로 중심부에 낮은 주파수 대역에서 동작하는 다이폴 형태의 안테나와 높은 주파수에서 공진 특성을 가지는 두 개의 대칭 구조로 구성된 공진 소자로 되어 있다. 또한 전산 모의 실험으로 각 주파수 대역에서 안테나의 표면에 전류가 밀집되는 곳을 확인하였다. 전류가 밀집된 부분의 길이를 조정함으로서 각 주파수 대역에서 독립적으로 공진 주파수를 변화시킬 수 있었다. 그리고 입력 임피 던스 대역폭$(VSWR\leq2)$이 2 GHz 대역에서 362 MHz(14.23 %), 5 GHz 대 역 에서 1188 MHz(22.13 %)로 광대역 특성을 나타내었다. 측정된 안테나의 최대 이득은 2 GHz 대역에서 4.33 dBi이고 5 GHz 대역에서 5.48 dBi로서 이득 면에서 개선되었다. 제작된 안테나는 전 방향성의 양호한 방사 패턴 특성을 갖는다.
