In this paper, we propose a new symbol offset estimation technique for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless LAN. When both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI) do not exist in an OFDM symbol, symbol offsets cause circular shifts in the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by the amount of symbol offset. Also, the power delay profile of a typical multipath wireless channel can be modeled by exponentially decaying function, and most energy of multipath channel is concentrated at the beginning part of the CIR. Based on these properties, the proposed symbol offset estimation technique estimates the CIR, which is circularly shifted by the amount of symbol offset, and then calculates the partial mean power from the estimated impulse response by using a moving window with a finite length. And, symbol offset can be estimated from the index of a moving window having the maximal partial mean power. The proposed technique can reduce noise effect in the process of the CIR estimation, and remove ISI and ICI using repetitive training symbol structure in time-domain for minimum training overhead. The performances of the proposed symbol offset estimation technique in typical indoor channels are demonstrated by computer simulation.
Two general security measures in computing networks are secure data transmission and user authentication, These problems are still critical in the wireless LAN environments. Thus security becomes most significant issue in personal network environments and ubiquitous networks based on wireless LANs. We purpose a new authentication system for these kind of environments, and coined it UPMA(Ubiquitous Personal Mutual Authen-tication) model. UPMA supports authenticating configurations which provides personal verification for each system. It guarantees secure communications through the session key setup, and provides mutual authentication by verifying each user and his/her station. UPMA solves security problems in ubiquitous networks without accessing authentication server, Instead it performs mutual authentication between terminals or between systems. It is a global authentication system which enables global roaming service through the Internet or other public networks, It can be used to guarantee safe and convenient access to a company Intranet or to a home network.

Handoff is a critical issue for seamless roaming in IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks. In order to provide real-time services, handoff mechanism must be provided. However, the IEEE 802.11 standard handoff is not appropriate to provide the services, because it is based on the full-scanning approach which spends too much time searching Access Point (AP). In this paper, we propose a new scheme, which can reduce the scanning latency. A station performs full-scanning operation for finding APs when it enters wireless networks for the first time. The station sends the scanned channel information to AP. AP maintains the neighbor channel table based on the information received from stations. A station performs the partial-scanning by using the table. Therefore, the proposed scheme can reduce the scanning latency.

For the efficient transmission of burst data in the time varying wireless channel, opportunistic scheduling is one of the important techniques to maximize multiuser diversity gain. In this paper, we propose a distributed opportunistic scheduling scheme for wireless LAN network. A proportional fair scheduling, which is one of the opportunistic scheduling schemes, is used for centralized networks, whereas we design distributed proportional fair scheduling (DPFS) scheme and medium access control with distributed manner. In the proposed DPFS scheme, each receiver estimates channel condition and calculates independently its own priority with probabilistic manner, which can reduce excessive probing overhead required to gather the channel conditions of all receivers. We evaluate the proposed DPFS using extensive simulation and simulation results show that DPFS obtains higher network throughput than conventional scheduling schemes and has a flexibility to control the fairness and throughput by controlling the system parameter.

Wireless multicast service can be used for video streaming service to save the network resources by sending the same popular multimedia contents to a group of users at once. For better multimedia streaming multicast service, we propose a quality-aware rate adaptation (QARA) scheme for scalable video multicast in rate adaptive wireless networks. In QARA, transmission rate is determined depending on the content's type and users' channel conditions. First, the base layer is transmitted by a low rate for high reliability. That means we provide basic service quality to all users. On the contrary, the transmission rate for enhancement layer is adapted by using channel condition feedback from a randomly selected node. So, the enhancement layer frames in a multimedia content is sent with various transmission rates. Therefore, each node can be provided with differentiated quality services. Consequently, QARA is capable of serving heterogeneous population of mobile nodes. Moreover, it can utilize network resources more efficiently. Our simulation results show that QARA outperforms utilization of the available transmission rate and reduces the data transmission time.

Wi-Fi is a rapidly spreading communications network with Smart phone's publication, the technology has become Ubiquitous-based core network which is connected to personal computers, laptops, and tablet PC. Wi-Fi can send currently a variety of data standard due to developed wireless LAN communications network. One of Wi-Fi standard protocols, which is IEEE 802.11n, use 2.4GHz and 5GHz band. 2.4GHz band is used for 802.11b/g protocol because wavelength is long, diffraction and receiving distance is enough to connect other device. 5GHz band has more available channels to use than 2.4GHz band, so there is no frequency interference of other wireless device such as Bluetooth, RFID. Moreover, there is low interference between channels due to small users in each bandwidth level. In the thesis, we are going to analyze 802.11a/b/g protocol which has used since the beginning of Wi-Fi protocol and 802.11n protocol which is used lately. Furthermore, we look into development and direction for standardization of the next generation wireless LANs which are 802.11ac and 802.11ad. In addition, we will consider for the security, vulnerabilities and its countermeasure in Wireless LAN.

In this paper, the network performance of a turbo coded optical code division multiple access (COMA) system with cross-layer, which is between physical and network layers, concept is analyzed and simulated We consider physical and MAC layers in a cross-layer concept. An intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical system employing pulse position modulation (PPM) is considered In order to increase the system performance, turbo codes composed of parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCCs) is utilized. The network performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BEP). From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding and decoding complexity. Also, it is confirmed that the performance of such an optical COMA network can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations in the decoding process. The results of this paper can be applied to implement the indoor optical wireless LANs.

The lack of QoS (Quality of Service) support functionalities in IEEE 802.11 DCF mode makes it difficult to provide real-time multimedia services in WLANs. In this paper, we propose an effective available bandwidth measurement method in IEEE 802.11b DCF environments. The proposed method measures the total channel idle time and the collision probability during each measurement period. Then, the available bandwidth is calculated by considering those measured information and the transmission overheads at MAC and PRY layers. The performances of the proposed method are evaluated using OPNET simulator. The simulation results show that the proposed method provides more exact results than existing comparable schemes.

IEEE 802.11e EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access)는 4개의 AC(Access Category)를 이용하여 트래픽에 따른 우선순위를 부여하고 QoS(Quality of Service)를 제공하기 위해 표준화되었다. EDCA는 이진 백오프 알고리즘을 갖는 CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) 방법을 이용한다.
