Valve springs with non-circular cross-section are widely used in automotive engines. Because of the reduced height, the oval cross-section provides some merits in its install height and stress distribution. This paper introduces a new method to generate optimal shape of the non-circular cross-section. For given width and height, arbitrary shape of the cross-section are described using the Hermite spline curves. Cross-section area and maximum stress level are chosen as performance indices, and nonlinear optimization problems are formulated with inequality constraints. Compared to a production spring wire, cross-section area can be reduced about 2.4 [%] without increasing maximum stress level. In addition, the other approach gives an optimum cross-section which reduces maximum stress level of 2.0 [%] without increasing cross-section area.

In this paper, we present a vision system which measures the cross-section of a hot wire-rod in the steel plant. We developed a mobile vision system capable of accurate measurement, which is strong to vibration and jolt when moving. Our system uses green laser light sources and CCD cameras as a sensor, where laser sheet beams form a cross-section contour on the surface of the hot wire-rod and the reflected light from the wire-rode is imaged on the CCD cameras. We use four lasers and four cameras to obtain the image with the complete cross-section contour without an occlusion region. We also perform camera calibrations to obtain each cameras physical parameters by using a single calibration pattern sheet. In our measuring algorithm, distorted four-camera images are corrected by using the camera calibration information and added to generate an image with the complete cross-section contour of the wire-rod. Then, from this image, the cross-section contour of the wire-rod is extracted by preprocessing and segmentation, and its height, width and area are measured.
This work presents a contribution to understand the inverted trussed beams behavior. The system has a main beam and struts with rectangular cross section associated to a wire rope enlaced to the main beam. It is an unpublished system with the advantage of easy positioning of the wire rope, once it is a continuous and connected by turnbuckles. It is a system that can be used as support for concrete formworks or for rehabilitation wooden beams proposal. The enlacement of the cable demands a small notch at the top of the cross section and a cross pin at the bottom. Six inverted trussed beams were tested, with spans of 180 cm with cables diameter of 1/4". Additionally, four simple beams without any external steel cable were also tested with material from the same lot of wood, allowing a comparison in rupture. The results showed capacity gain of around 60% compared to a simple beam. Once the wire rope characteristics and anchoring are very important for structure response, some improvement suggestions for the efficiency of the cables are also presented.
Developing turbulent flows in a rotating 90 degree bend with square cross-section were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. The six orientation hot-wire technique was applied to measured the distributions of 3 mean velocities and 6 Reynolds stress components. Effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces caused by the curvature and rotation of bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures were experimentally investigated Productive addition of Coriolis and centrifugal forces to the outward radial direction in the entrance region of bend increases the secondary flow intensity according to the rotational speeds. However, after 45 degree of bend, centrifugal force due to the rotation of bend may promote the break down of counter rotating vortex pair into multi-cellular pattern, thereby decreasing the production rate of turbulence energy and Reynolds stresses.

Hot-wire measurements were carried out on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating curved duct. The cross-section of the curved duct varies from 100mm${\times}$50mm rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the 50mm${\times}$100mm rectangular shape at the bend outlet. Experimental setup consists of the test section of $90^{\circ}$ curved duct, rotating disc of 1.95m diameter, Ag-Ni precision slip ring, automatic traversing mechanism, variable speed motor, centrifugal blower, orifice flowmeter and hot-wire anemometer. Data signals from the rotating curved duct are transmitted through the slip ring to the computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynold stresses components were obtained from the fluctuating and mean voltage measured by the slant type hot-wire probe rotating into 6 orientations. We investigate the effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the turbulence structure.
Copper wire bonding is an alternative interconnection technology that serves as a viable and cost saving alternative to gold wire bonding. In this paper, ultrasonic wedge bonding with $25{\mu}m$ copper wire on Au/Ni/Cu metallization of a PCB substrate was performed at ambient temperature. The central composite design of experiment (DOE) approach was applied to optimize the copper wire wedge bonding process parameters. After that, pull test of the wedge bond was performed to study the bond strength and to find the optimum bonding parameters. SEM was used to observe the cross section of the wedge bond. The pull test results show good performance of the wedge bond. Additionally, DOE results gave the optimized parameter for both the first bond and the second bond. Cross section analysis shows a continuous interconnection between the copper wire and Au/Ni/Cu metallization. The diffusion of Cu into the Au layer was also observed.

The objective of the current study is to determine cross-sectional profile of intermediate dies in order to improve the plastic strain homogeneity which directly affects not only the dimensional accuracy but also the mechanical properties of final product by redesigning the intermediate dies using the conventional electric field analysis (EFA) method. Initially, the multi-pass shape wire drawing was designed by using the equivalent potential lines from EFA. The area reduction ratio was calculated from the number of passes in multi-pass shape wire drawing but constrained by the capacity of the drawing machine and the drawing force. In order to compensate for a concentration of strain in a region of the cross section of the wire, the process for multi pass wire drawing from initial round material to an intermediate die was redesigned again using the electric field analysis. Both drawing process designs were simulated by the finite element method in which the strain distribution and standard deviation plastic strain of the cross section of drawn wires were examined.
Hot-wire measurements are reported on the developing turbulent flows subject to plane rate of strain in a rotating $90^{\circ}$ dog bend. The cross-section of the bend varies from $100mm{\times}50mm$ rectangular shape at the bend inlet gradually to the $50mm{\times}100mm$ shape at the bend outlet with remaining a constant area. Data signals from the rotating test section are transmitted through a slip ring to the personal computer which is located at the outside of the rotating disc. 3-dimensional velocity and 6 Reynolds stress components were calculated from the equations which correlate the fluctuating and mean voltage values measured with rotating a slant type hot-wire into 6 orientations. The effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces on the mean motions and turbulence structures are investigated with respect to rotational speed.

On this study, $CO_2$ gas, net of Ar gas, and mixed gas in solid wire(AWS ER 70S-6) and flux cored wire(AWS E71T-1) were used to weld on Mild steel(SS400). After the progress, the status changes of the welds in Mild steel(SS400) were investigated with compositional changes. For stable experiments, welding was conducted using the automatic feeder. Radiation testing, hardness testing, chemical composition analysis and penetrated cross-section were measured. Through these experiments, shapes of penetrated cross-section, chemical composition changes, and weld defects according to the variation of welding gas were known. Weld defects and weld cross-sectional shapes by the variation of the welding voltage were also detected.

We studied the plating properties of Sn-Pb solder according to the shape of the Cu wire's cross-section for photovoltaic ribbon. The thickness of the Sn-Pb layer largely decreased to 29% on a curved Cu surface, compared to a flat Cu surface. This phenomenon is caused by the geometrical decrease in the contact angle of the liquid Sn-Pb solder and an increase in the surface energy of the solid/vapor on the curved Cu surface. We suggest a new ribbon's design where the Cu wire's cross-section is a semi-ellipse. These semi-ellipse ribbons can decrease the use of Sn-Pb solder to 64% and increase the photovoltaic efficiency, by reducing the contact area between the ribbon and cell, to 84%. We also see an improvement of reflectivity in the curved surface.
